i just pulled it! which i woulda been kind of proud of, if it wasnt because two 15 year old idiots decided to come out of a shop and step straight on to a pedestrian crossing, without looking, in front of me... the people at the bus stop might have liked it tho! would have then been nice if the stopped too but they continued to amble across, eating ice cream, at about a 3rd of walking pace... next time the might not be so lucky and some poor sod will have to explain why they just hit someone one a crossing :brick:

Well I guess you fixed your brakes properly :) Unfortunetally there's lots of people out there that take people stopping for them for granted and don't think about stopping distances etc.

While I agree with you that there are those people. Walking my son's to and from preschool each day requires crossing at a zebra crossing. So I've also seen the other side of the coin.

We all know that if there is some one waiting to cross and you are behind the diamond then you obliged to stop right? WRONG... These bastards just keep on going, some assholes even speed up as they see you approaching the crossing. I can stand there literally 3 minutes with cars going past, the only way out of the cycle is to step out and make 'em stop. And pushing my two sons in a push chair in front of me means it's not something I enjoy doing or do lightly.

Not to say that was the case in your situation Blakamin, rather just something people need to remember.

Is this really a rule? The Road Code (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/sharing-the-road/with-pedestrians2.html) refers to the diamond as a warning for drivers that a pedestrian crossing is ahead, but doesn't say anything about it being a guide to pedestrians regarding oncoming cars. I guess the question is whether somebody standing on the footpath, next to a pedestrian crossing is "on the crossing", which does require you to give way.

While I think it is certainly sensible and courteous to stop for people waiting by crossings, is it a requirement? Anybody else know the answer to this?

On a zebra crossing, pedestrians have right of way. IIRC. Therefore it would be Naughty for cars to fail to stop, if doing so was safely possible. If I get a chance later this evening, and nobody has debunked or supported me before then, I'll post quotes from the Transport Regulations.

As you say, on a pedestrian crossing, pedestrians have right-of-way. No doubt about that. Ghost Lemur was talking about people waiting beside a pedestrian crossing, on the footpath. I've heard the statement he made about about the crossing diamonds before, but can't find reference to it in the road code. It seems to be something that could lead to the situation that Blakamin initially commented on if people mistake the purpose of the diamonds and use it as some indication that its safe to cross in front of oncoming traffic.

This isn't to say that I don't think cars shouldn't stop in the situation Ghost lemur described, just whether they have to stop?

I thought that the point of the diamond road marking was also for the benefit of pedestrians -- they weren't supposed to step out on the crossing if there was a vehicle between them and the diamond??

Is the Rode Code taught in schools? Surely pedestrians and bicyclists have just as much reason to know its nuances as do motorists...

thats when i freaked... when i found i was still on the seat, moving, and looking a bit too much towards the ground.... and then crunch, wheel down then finally stopped totally!

It's a marked pedestrian crossing by a school
The crossing wardens are standing there
The signs are out
Kids are actually in the act of crossing the road
There's a policeperson standing next to the crossing observing.
Would that require car drivers to stop?
Apparently, pedestrian crossings work entirely according to freedom of choice or personal preference, because in the situation described above, someone drove straight through this crossing by the school our kids attended when we lived in Christchurch. Two kids were run over.
We have a pedestrian crossing up the road from our house, and it's not safe to use it unless there are no cars coming, despite it being a road with little traffic. My son nearly got run over one day, because he was crossing the road there, and someone overtook the car that was waiting for him to cross!:shit:

I have a friend who stopped for a couple of kids at a crossing & noticed a car behind him getting bigger but the kids were in front of him so he couldn’t go anywhere. Wrote off his moderately new CBR & was lucky not to get seriously hurt.

Didn’t see him officer sez she driving the car. :2guns: So presumably the kids would have been mowed if he hadn’t been there?
