bomma
28th September 2007, 08:09
Hey the guys from Wild West have told me that they are going to start going out on rides every second sunday. As stated in the title the ride will be to WHangamata on the 7th of Oct which is a sunday.

DETAILS: keep checking the details coz they may be updated
Meet: Wild West Honda 3018 Great North Rd, New Lynn
When: Sunday, 7th Oct
Time: 9.30 meet for 10am departure.
Where: Whangamata. Im not sure of the exact route.
Who: This ride is for people of all skill levels and those roads are a great place to learn some of the finer and basic skills.

Anybody who has read any posts by me about Whangamata know that i have fallen in  with the roads out there!!! Amazing sweepers and right now theyve patched up the seal on all the corners so they are in kick-ass condition with little to no gravel and near track condition seal :Punk:

I'll try and make it but with my exam timetable the way it is i dont know if i have the day to spare :bye:

Cheers

EDIT: Details have been updated 7.40pm 29/09

You are a sucker for a good ride Bomma, there's no point in saying now that you'll "try to make time", or "I can't go, have a test", cause the truth is you will go. So now that you know you are going - sort out your uni so it doesn't stress you out and ruin your ride!

Anyway, yes I can also vouch that this is a great piece of road, one I have travelled literally a 1000 times in my 20 something years of growing up in Whangamata and Auckland.

I can also say (quietly) that in all of my years of travelling through the Kopu kills (the fun sweepers part of the ride) that I have only ever seen a handful of cops and that's in the peak holiday season too.

Just keep an eye out for dead possums, land slips and pig hunters...

Can't wait till your Kwaka is in my garage maybe when you come back it has a CBR Urbantiger paint scheme as opposed to the racing green. :devil2:

i can see how those roads could be lethal (if you were very stupid, very heavy on the gas and very light in skill) but i was just wondering....mayb a name that only locals know or something....

Mussel pie is another good seafood choice - but never buy one from a petrol station or dairy.

It's a shame La Hacienda has gone now (infamous Mexican Takeaway joint in Whanga), that place was awesome. Apart from the bakery we went to on the vegas ride, Whanga's gone all upmarket now... can't even get a burger and chips for much less than $10 from the various fish'n'chip outlets in town.

It all starts with a casual ride on a motorcycle...

I'll be taking a pillion too. Not to talk you out of it, but expect a solid 2 hours each way, so could be a fair slog for a newbie pillion?

Well after a slight delay at work this morning we set off... she did well as a first time pillion, headed down to whangamata via the gourge... awsome awsome roads! ...after stopping to remind pillion (again) that trying to have a conversation with me during a 45k corner with boots scraping is a 'tad tricky' for me. We stopped at a nice pub for a beer, saw heaps of bikes around there... no idea if any of them where your group or not? I had my kb shirt on so was easy to spot! Return trip and made better time despite me taking a wrong turn and ending up in thames... :pinch: ...back to the shore and she couldnt be happier!

Great day overall!

It was a great ride as the Coro usually is. In 5 hours of actual riding, Nish and I only spent 30 minutes with the main group. We missed the departure at Wild West Honda and then got left behind at the lunch stop in Whanga too! Fortunately by that stage we'd found Kim and Hong and a few other stragglers. There must have been close to 30 riders before everyone got lost/split. Hopefully the official club photographer will post some pictures soon (Kim).

Big mixture of bikes and riders. Even after growing up in the Coro and knowing the roads / corners pretty well, there was no catching some guys (bastards).

The cops were in full force today too - spotted no fewer than 7 different units but they had no reason to be interested in us... no reason.

Anyway, cheers!

Here are the pics. Awesome ride. Guzzi's rear tyre is looking very scrubbed in. The fish pie was good.

Unless he gave the chain a good clean with kerosene then lubing it after the ride. I aint got a chain on the Guzzi so less maintenance for me.

I normally clean with kerosene every 500km then lube it Motul chainlube. Takes about half an hour to clean it then wait for it to dry. While I am at it clean the rear rims with a kerosene rag. I find kerosene gets rid off all the crap on the rim.

Sounds good. What time should I bring my bike around?

I feel guilty for ringing out the RF for so long yesterday. Gonna give her a an oil change and a good scrubbin. Brakes are squealing again too - I put soft pads in to preserve the rotors and they're good around town but shit when you push the bike.

lol im pretty sure i sent out an email like 2 weeks ago 2 the club members letting em know about the ride. Its a pity coz basically since the club has started its the same bunch of people showing up for the rides. I really want to get a uni biker "community" thing going, and this is visible from the way friendships have grown between the fullas who have come on rides.

Im not going to be missing out on rides (well after exams anyways), so its not really much of a loss for me but if only we had more uni people showing up on the rides.....

WHAT A FUCKING AWESOME DAY!!! Me and macstar ripped up those roads!! Shit if i didnt have to get back to work i wudda gone back over those roads a few more times!!! Isaac tried to keep up but, due to his old age, ended up hurtin his injured back in the process. also very nearly ran himself off the road trying to get away from me  very entertaining :niceone:

And some of those guys on bigger bikes were being a bit......lenient with their cornering but heavy on the straights which was annoying (especially that guy on the cruiser who cornered like a nana and then hooned it out of the corners which meant he was a bloody pain in da ass).

Definately have to do that ride again before i head off to India!!

Looks like you had mean fun.

Just went over the Wild West Honda to pick up a few bits and pieces, and Craig mentioned he kept up real well his big twin. Big turn up apparently, 27 riders.

Won't be able to hit Taupo this weekend but I am there for the pink ribbon cruise.

My four week dry spell finishes this week.

Do the SMC club members know about our club forum on KB? That's by far the best way to keep up to date on rides etc.

I admit it, by the 5th or 6th hour I was getting pretty stiff and fatigued. After that close encounter with the side of the road and an extra heavy slam to the back I decided to ease off... By that time though I had had more than my fill of riding thrills but.

And hey, for the record, you were only able to scrutinise my riding so well cause you were behind me for most of the trip!

I wonder what effect a 3 month break from riding will have on you when you go to India next month?:niceone:

yea we tell em bout the forum in EVERY email, and even include a link to this thread in EVERY email just to save em the trouble!!!

After that close encounter with the side of the road

still cudnt believe you veered off man!! that was completely out of the blue!!!

lol many a right hand lane passing while flippin the bird was done yesterday :)
bet the fullas who we rode with back to auckland thot we were retarded coz we kept hooning it on the straights for no apparent reason :nono:

Sorry I didnae make it fullas! Would've been an awsome day, but I had domestic chores to do.

On the bright side, I did get to pick up the big VTR yesterday...lostsa stylistic changes needed to my riding (needs much more input than a wee bike!!!), but oh, the fun scaring children and small creatures with those yoshis :devil2: Was opening and closing the throttle just to hear the sound on the overrun.

Shame it's gotta go into storage until after exams now :crybaby:

Catch you all soon.

During the weekend bro but I run out of chain-lube. I woke up this morning with a sore-back and I think I got a cold... alright time for a snooze at work :zzzz:

edit: worth mentioning too that the guzzi won the RF twice from the traffic lights on the way back.

I forgot to comment on the above before. Good on ya for bringing this up Nish. Increasingly, some of my best (and varied) mates are bikers. I've only known the SMC crew for a couple of months but already get on with you guys better than my fellow postgrad class mates that I've known for 18months.

There's something about getting with a bunch of mates and talking, breathing and of course, riding bikes. Unlike most clubs, classes, workplaces and bunches of people in general, there's virtually no bitching or politics between members.

Anyway, glad to have met you guys and to be an unofficial and non-paying member of the Auckland Uni SMC. Looking forward to the next ride & Friday avo drinks.

Hey man! When did you sneak that edit in? What is this? Pick on Isaac day? Between you and Nish, the KB community must think I'm a geriatric old fool on a moped...

You only won the drag races cause I didn't want to stretch my chain and eat teeth from dropping the clutch - you shaft driven show off! Besides, if you removed that bucket-sized pretruding search light (excuse for a headlight) on the front of the Guzzi, the RF would have won...!

It's not that bad - I know what I'm in for, so I really have someting to look forward to and it gives me a chance to sort out a few minor issues -

Put on scott oiler, check out gunged up side-stand switch that gave some problems on day one, [bloody idiot interlock switches!!!] get battery checked (may be connected to switch issue) AND sort out insurance - including disputes tribunal hearing to finally iron out the issues from my April crash on the bandit...if I'm lucky I'll come out with my $500 excess intact.

Other than those things, the bike was eeeeexxxcellent:
Gentle as a pussycat if you please or alarmingly rapid if you let those BIG carbys take a gulp. :devil2:

Just don't want to ride without insurance (sensible I believe), and Mrs Phurrball is best appeased to ensure peace and harmony -

she didn't want me to have a 'big' bike until I'm done with my degree, so I'm doing OK to have wangled one now :devil2: It took a lot of convincing to get to this point. Just need to get her out on her little VTR too so she gets reacquainted with riding again and how fun it is

(She isn't as evil as some of you might assume - she's just trying to motivate me to finish my studies, and thinks I'm a dangerous loon. I'm sure many males fall into the latter category in the eyes of their partner no matter how they are in objective reality - it just means they care and don't want us maimed )
