View Full Version : Manawatu: Taranaki touring ride, Sat 6 Oct 07

Sat 6 october will be taking the girl back up to taranaki.
I want to get some practice at some lengthy times on the bike so this will be a no stopping no waiting trip. If riders fall behind then they will catch up at the next fuel stop. if riders go the wrong way then we will catch up with them the following week.
Pace will be trying to average 95km/hr moving (130km.hr max) and 80km/hr average overall.
If Hawera riders want to meet up then we shouldnt be far away at 10am but just join in the ride and we will stop at Inglewood (or meet at inglewood)
Have attached a map of whole route.
Hopefully you can go to http://nz.briefcase.yahoo.com/lancebobbie@xtra.co.nz and there is a meg download containing 23 maps of the route detailing the different sections so no one gets lost.
Who is up for it.
Oh yeah,, its about 750km.

so in a nutshell, is this right...
same route as last time except turn off near mangaweka and do pohangina valley instead of vinegar hill
fuel stops are inglewood, piopio (lunch i guess), and taihape

there are some subtle changes. Miss Marton all together, turn left at inglewood instead of right, up hill road on the mountain. Egmont villiage road and then the obvious turning off at manaweka on way home.
hmmm wonders if Betsy & i could keep up

The only way anyone is going to get left behind is if they stop. Moving averages will be at a comfortable, manageable pace. (110-130km.hr)

Seems good ride, are you turning at Egmont Village and coming out at Bell Block, nice hilly twisty road, has a few trucks travelling along it.There is a gas station on corner of Egmont Rd & SH3 turn off and petrol 2c cheaper wohoo, just be weary crossing onto main rd at end of Egmont Rd,can be real busy, could be a starter for 10.Otherwise if slower riders(me)want too send them along sh3a turn right at Inglewood so don't head to NP,they will make up the ground quick than going your way, then can meet at junction sh3 &sh3a and cruise into Waitara.Hope it helps.:mobile:

You realise you are going right past 2 of the very best motorcycling roads the north Island has to offer aye?
SH4 from Whanganui to Tohunga Junction and SH43 from Taumarunui to Stratford.
When heading south on SH4 there is a twisty road 52km sign, it isn't every day you see one of those.
See this post (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=55988) for a review of SH43.

I have a cunning plan for you so called slower folks.
Why don't you join the trip to Waitara, then tootle back at own pace, say round the coast(sh45) back to home, agree you basically travel same route back except coastal round Taranaki, but from Hawera home is repeat from start.Might get a few locals to do the run round the mountain with you.

SH43. well, If it turns out meanie and I by ourselves then the route might be thrown out the window. Had a mixed bunch of reviews about hidden highway and been on a couple of roads where people have said that there is a "tad of gravel" and spent the next 3 days tightening all the bolts on the bike again after being rattled to bit for 20km. But your review of the road might have to convince me to go have a look for myself.

After Stranger, Bonez and Ynot promotion I have a "route 2". Funny enough the routes are only about 5km difference in total length.
I if you are thinking of joining up at 8 mile or something and we dont show up then we have probably taken the other route. Decision on exact route will probably be made when in Stratford.

this ride is looking doubtful, might be off the bike for a week or two - need a new rear disc and front pads but not sure when I'll get them done cos I got a few other things i need to fork out for :argh:
really noticed the lack of braking power this weekend...as long as i could anticipate it i was ok, but if I needed to stop in a serious hurry i'm not sure the brakes are up to it right now and thats a bit of a worry:Oops:

fair enough. Just make sure you are not running your pads so low your are scoring the discs. Pads are cheap, discs are not. Weather looks like it is turning to shit so jury still out but I might be caging it anyway.

They are meeting up with some out of town riders for lunch. This idea has some appeal but if I do see you passing the restaurant on the right I'll certainly wave :-)
If the weather is passable (and you have the time) give SH43 a go.

Because of the lack of interest in a touring ride and the perception that it will be one big race this saturday is going to be the original ashhurst duo (myself and Meanie) on an orginial touring ride (one where we just cruise till we run low on gas). Looking forward to getting out there and just eating up some miles. SH43 looks like a go now. Not sure exactly on timing. Probably in and out of taranaki before lunch though.

You guys should be close to Waitara about 11 ish,if leaving at 8.00.Hawera say 9.45,Waitara about 11 after fuel stop say Hawera or Stratford, back leaving Waitara say 11.30,into Stratford 12 ish,Whanga 63 beautiful km away eta about 12.45 or so depends on picture stops.Don't underestimate the fact of 60 odd km,part of it can be slow and the shite weather lately the road has parts were no sun hits it till late arvo,so can be slippery.
If you want a coffee give me a text, about 200 mts from main rd so not a great detour, might try and depending on day join in part way.

Would be in if it wasn't the GC the weekend after. Spending the weekend cleaning the bike, hopefully fitting a radguard, applying a bit more protective film etc. Have only done a small bit of the forgotten highway (on a GC) - want to do the whole thing one day. Taking next friday off and heading to Turangi at about 3ish if anyone wants to go for a pootle...

Gidday. Just bought the New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas - 100 Top Rides. It's bloody good and has SH 43 featured.
Here's a little bit of the description.
"Not for the faint hearted or those in a hurry, this route is definitely 'off the beaten track'. 43 offers some of the tightest and twistiest riding you will encounter in the North Island, along with 20 km of gravel riding. The road is narrow at times so take care.
The historic Whangamomona Pub and nearby scenic reserve are both well worth a stop. Indeed, you are likely to need a break by the time you reach this spot!"

Well what a day we had, rain, wind then an unexpected stop just before Waitara to talk to the over zealous policeman, then the forgotten highway What a blast that road is, non stop twisties that seemed to never end There was a convoy of tractors to manouver around then a guy in a people mover that thought he was in the targa rally His poor kids were being tossed from side to side The one in the middle was being flung around like a rag doll but they still managed to wave out the back window just before i passed
A tunnel that scared the shit out of me when it seemed to close in on me as i got further in Gotta have lights in them tunnels Then the small stretch of gravel The poor concours will never be the same :oi-grr: Taumarui by about 1.15 where we stopped for only the third time
We met up with Chancey,s alternative ride in Wiaouru and was a faster pace with lots more stops to home
Came across a huge bull in the middle of the road southof dogs place that was standing in the middle of the road and wasnt moving for anyone, didnt look to happy, nor did the grumpy old farmer when he drove past us
Awesome day once again and finished off with a bbq at mine with lots of laughs and a birthday tribute to Bonez
Conclusion.................. We talk too much
