Stolen bikes?

There are a lot of bikes getting stolen it seems. Yeah it's shit alright. But I have a question... Where do they end up? What is the recovery rate?

There are a shitload less bikes around than there are cars so I assume that they'd be easier to track? I wouldn't have the faintest idea of what happens to thm - surely not all sold for parts or stolen to order? I know that happens with cars... but bikes - I doubt it. I want to know coz I reckon that knowing what happens to them might make people more aware of either what they're buying or what to look for...

Parked my bike in town (Oamaru) today and looked back at it and thought, hope it's still there when I come back!

How do you secure a bike against quick big boys with big vans etc?

You would be overloaded just carting sufficient chains and shackles etc around!

First thing I do to any bike is make it look like crap. (didn't need to do that when I got the CX)

Slash the seat, BBQ paint the engine black and miss spots, paint the rest of it badly, throw mud on the bodywork and then spray the mud with sealant, replace the exhaust with a crashed and scraped old can, dent the tank in a few places, and... I dunno. Seems like enough to me. For a beginning.

You can get bike alarms, but I guess its a bit like cars, no one cares when an alarm goes off! You could park at a push bike rack and then put a bike lock on...
Then there is the guy at my work who is asking for trouble. He never locks the steering. SOmeonce ould easily push his bike away!

I know when I had my TT350 stolen from work I was told by the Police that it probably would end up on a farm somewhere and never be seen again. Which is exactly what happened, hence the payout and eventual purchase of the DRZ400. Hope this helps.

Bikes are becoming more popular, so it is natural to nick the popular mode of transport. Many bikes are light enough for 2 men to lift & simply walk away with or put into a van . Disc locks wouldn't be a lot of use in that situation & neither would the steering lock.
The simple truth is that if the theives want your bike they will probably get it, alarms will help but as nobody pays any attention to car alarms going off little attention will be paid to your bike alarm either.

how about asking the local councils to put in ground anchors?


ok it might be a pain having to take your chain and lock into town with you but on most bikes the said chain and lock will fit under the seat.


there was a campaign in england a few years ago where a lot of bikers protested to the authorities about the ease of bikes being stolen from "secure" bike parks. they parked a bike in one of the "secure" bike parks and a little while later 2 men went and "stole" the bike. all under camera supervision. not one person batted an eyelid! they presented this evidence to the local authorities via a court case (BMF involvement?) and within a few months ground anchors were installed in all the bike parks in the city! it was cambridge if i remember correctly?


just a thought but maybe its worth getting a no win no fee type lawyer to look into it?

Think most of the bikes are stolen to order by gangs and than either stripped down or sent overseas

just get a bike like mine, its big, heavy and no one else wants it :2thumbsup

stripped and shipped. by the time you realise its gone, chances are its already been stripped down with the usable stuff packed into a container. anything with numbers likely has them ground off and then dumped.

my partners panhead has a little thing on the side "dont bother rippin this scoot, its all numbered" and literally every single part on that bike has numbers stamped into. so if anyone did steal it, nothing would be usable as everything is tagged.

in town i just use the steering lock.
