Hi guys JSG here,

It’s been a while since I was in touch with many of you. Well…as most of you all know I’m rather infatuated with motorcycles.

On Sunday the 16th of September a riding buddy and I went for a ride out in the country. On my way home I crashed - badly.

Due to blunt force trauma to my head the actual memory of my crash didn’t form, so I have no memory of the actual event as it happened. I regained consciousness several hours later in hospital where I stayed for 7 days. I suffered a skull fracture near the base of my skull, two broken ribs behind my right side, slightly twisted wrists, the left a bit worse, banged knees and a general feeling of being in a fight with Barbender. Due to nerve damage caused by my skull fracture the right side of my face is temporarily paralyzed, giving me a rather ‘interesting’ smile. I’ve also lost 7 kilos in 10 days. I shall be going to live with my parents in New Zealand for a while until I make a full recovery. My employers have kindly given me all the leave I want.

The poor Gixxer Thou happened to be uninsured at the time of the crash and all my riding gear has been ripped – photos available to those with strong stomachs – just ask. The bikes a wreck as both the bike and I spun in the air several times and bounced on the road several times. I managed to literally rip the fairing off the bike on the left side and on either end smashing the headlight, tail light and dent both wheels properly. I've also scrapped the paint off the top of the gas tank.

The crash has costed me many thousand dollars; be a while until I buy my next bike. So I’m forced to take a short break from bikes (wish I was richer or had insurance!) I still love em though, there’s nothing quite like the pure violence generated by a Superbike on full throttle. I was thinking of maybe going out and spending more time with friends instead of the race track, spend some time traveling.

Overall – I’M REALLY HAPPY. ALL THE DOCTORS SAID I SHOULD BE DEAD – BUT I’M ALIVE!!!

That was my last ride for a while but what-a-ride, I got to feel what a gixxer thou is like, saw well over 260kmph on the dials, felt severe braking into corners, felt the rear go skittish and spent more than enough time over 200kmph throughout the day to last me a long time.

REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE. THANKS FOR READING THIS GUYS – DO PLEASE STAY IN TOUCH. I'LL TRY AND MAKE IT TO THE PUBS/DESTINATIONS AT SOME OF THE QUICKIE'S THU NIGHT RIDES WHILE HOME.

REGARDS,
JSG

I'm not sorry to hear about your off at all.

Anyone who spends a whole day over 200kmh needs to be off the roadand away from other road users and pedestrians. Seems like natural selection is working just fine.

Cheers, no offence taken. All the speeding done was done in the country with no traffic around. I crashed when I was coming home, less than an hour from the town and end of ride. Riding at a slow cruisy speed which didn't require touching the brakes at around 80 - 100kmph which is below the 110kmph limit here.

I don't do much road rides and prefer the track. Any speeding on the road is stupid although we get away some times. I admit to being stupid on the road.

In October I had 6 booked trackdays including all four levels of the Superbike school. Given my affinity for higher speeds I much prefer the peace and clear space of a race track.

I know some fast riders they all end up in usually one of two places:

1. A Podium and race seriously giving up road rides.

2. Dead as they finally bin it on the road. That's why I don't like road rides.

I was off away from other road users and pedestrians at all such times bud. If you ever get to ride around the New South Wales country side you will be lucky to see a vehicle once every 5 mins and there are no pedestrians in the country.

I have been cleared of speeding by the police and eyewitnesses and not charged under any offenses. The police attended the crash scene. They believe I crashed by hitting a brick on the road that was unavoidable given the line of sight and tightness of the corner.

I pick my times and places to speed and don't drink alchohol, tea/coffee or smoke, so am never under the influence of anything, I never ride tired or with a mixed up mind either. The bike is used as a weekend toy only and never to commute on.

I'm not claiming to be a saint either, there is much I've learned from this, especially about the quality of one's life.

You're exactly right, when speeding most people are 110% focussed and very vigilant.

When cruising or in familiar areas people relax and miss things, they also seem to have slower reflexes, hence don't react quick enough and crash. This is reflected in crash statistics too.

Sorry to hear about your bin and the aftermath that ensued. I've had a experience of my own as you probably allready know. Bummer about the lack of insurance, that has got to bite, I hope the gixxer was paid for allready bro. Actually I did not even know that you had upgraded from the blue zxr, but then again I have also been out of the picture for awhile. Good to hear that your paralasis is going to be a tempory thing. I tell you, I hope your counting your blessings for that as you don't want to travel down the road I'm on eh. Its interesting how these things make one re-evaluate life isn't it and many here possibly cannot comprehend just how much. Well hopefully our paths cross again in the future JSG and you heal well, enough to be back doing what it is you enjoy.

Mate - given what I know about you and how well I know you -your words mean a LOT!!!.

Have given out too much bling to give you any - but a million blings to you bud.

Don't know if we can meet, but I will call you sometime and have a decent chat - things are a bit tied up at the moment to talk and there are too many people/things always demanding my attention here presently.

The gixxer was bought with cash, nothing owed on it. Thank God :)

Plenty of time left in life yet and Its going to be awhile before my wheels are set up to use independantly (the wheels of change turn slowly at ACC) and before I'm back with Coaster in a pad set up specifically for my needs. Not only did I have the injuries to contend with, but I had quite a strong adverse reaction to one of the medications that I was put on. However, onwards and upwards. Much like yourself, I would ride again if I could, however its not the ack of finances that is the porblem.

Sorry to hear you are banged up JSG and best wishes on the road to recovery.

You have shown a lot of maturity with your open and honest post, knowing how many here would slam dunk you for admittiing to speeding. You could have left that snippet out to win the sympathy vote but you didn't.

Bugger about the insurance...why do folks spend big money on a bike and not bother to insure it? Rhetorical question, no answer required from you.

Get well and one day soon get out and enjoy riding again. Road rides are fun, no need to give them up completely.

I needed to contact one of my previous NZ Insurers to pass my details to the Aussie insurers, this would let me retain my full no claims discount that goes back over 7 years of cage ownership and 2 years of bike ownership.

I was going to do this "soon".............

Cripes, sounds like you are on the way to mending .. keep a positive outlook and it sounds like you are! Was wondering what you got up to, wish you didn't have to find other passions and hobbies outside of biking via this route!

Anyway, glad to hear you are still in the land of the living and hopefully find some slice of life that will give you the same kick as biking did (just not with the same kick that got you off biking!)

You ever considered painting little model soldiers or racing RC cars? :innocent:

I don't know you at all but take that head injury seriously and make sure you get the support you need cause head injuries are not always treated well in NZ. I had one in a car crash that resulted in memory and brain capacity loss. It also lead to a belt of depression (the impact can often mix up the brain's chemistry).

Good news is that within 5 years I was back almost as good as new. Today (10 years on) I have completed a Masters degree at uni and have been accepted for my Phd.

Hope it all goes well, and check out some of the books that are around on head injuries if you don't mentally feel 100% (and have the concentration to read).

Jeez mate you just cheated the grim reaper for the first and probably the last time too. So don't try the salmon mousse OK..! Funny how life sends us messages, some subtle and others not so. Part the reason I ride a more sedate bike now... I know where you could pick up a nice Enfield bullet?
So, my friend, heal well and I hope to go riding with you some time again in the future.

Only just caught up with this thread. There but for the grace of (your) god etc...
Proof positive that a biker's lot is eternal vigilance. NEVER relax. I was saying only the other day (to a WOF tester, of all people) that it is what we didn't see that kills us. Hitting a brick on the road (or a pinecone like BigG did) is never a good thing.
Sure it wasn't a loose chain, JSG?:Pokey:
