View Full Version : Nodding - seen from 'the other side'

I know this is a regularly revisted theme, but what the heck...

On Saturday, I had to take my wife's XV250 over to the dealer (the 2nd rear shock had arrived and she couldn't head over, so it fell to me to ride it for the morning... what a blow! :msn-wink: )

Anyway, it was a nice day, so there were a number of bikes on the road. So as an experiment, I nodded to all bikes that I saw.

Amazing change of reaction. If I'd been on my SV650S, I'd have gotten a nod from the race-rep rider (probably) and almost certainly been ignored by the guy on the BMW cruiser.

Saturday? Mr Race-Rep ignored me to the point of looking the other way, but I got a warm greeting from the BMW cruiser!

Very surprised at the latter as I expected standard BMW-snobbery to kick in.

I still don't understand why we, as bikers, have to split into little 'tribes' - OK, you've got a preference, but why exclude other bikers? End of the day, it could well be the guy on what to you is the biking equivalent of the AntiChrist that pulls over to help you when you have a problem.

That's good to see - someone else has been to the otherside and seen it's just the same.It makes me laugh when all the sports bike riders here go on about other bikes not waving - but they never wave at me cause I'm not on a sports bike....wankers.

I have an easy rule. Any time I'm on the open road, I wave to anybody and everybody on two wheels. Including beemer, cruiser and dritbkie riders. In town or on the motorway, I nod, but only some of the time, because I'm usually in a hurry and trying to avoid traffic. So... meh.

I nod and wave to everyone - pushbikes, chicks in cars, people on bikes. Dont really care if they nod/wave back. Half the time they have so much poser kit on with tinted visors and all that rubbish - i'm not surprised they dont see anything.

You'd wear sunglasses in preference to a tinted visor???

I don't wave to pissy little 250s.

When I had a FXR I got next to no waves.

Now I get plenty of waves. But, as has been said before the type of bike really should not matter, the mere fact we are not in a cage should be reason enough to get a :wavey:

As I've mentioned in previous threads, I personally wave to all motorized two wheels. Even been known to wave at a cage dirtbike on trailer (figured they were still a rider even if not on the machine at the time).

Can't say it really bothers me if they don't wave back. But do like it when they do.

Hey Bob,I don't think much has changed.
When I started riding there was really only British an Jap,Neither group liked each other much.I rode both so didn't fit well with either. :innocent:
Then Along came Ducati,Lot's of people liked them, but they cost to much an the lights went out in strange places.their big plus was most of the cartoon wearers didn't like them,so they were kind of respectable with out being Jap. ;)
Then there was BMW,mostly owned by OLD folks that wouldn't talk to commoners anyway  .Then along came HD,mostly owned by the cartoon crowd and still living with the stigma today :stoogie: .The big plus with HD was it became safe to own a Brit bike without having to chain it up,down,an sideways to keep the cartoon crowd from stealing it,they were to busy nicking HDs from people that made the mistake of liking HD but not being cartoon wearers.
Then sometime in the eightys,I don't have the exact date,Somebody decided to make things even worse by inventing stupid terms like Sportbike, cruiser, retro, tourer, cafe, the last one being a real rip off.
So now we have the situation were people don't wave, hell it's always been like this.HD an BMW riders don't even wave to each other, just uncool old chap :shifty: .Sportbike riders don't wave to cruisers, incase it's an HD,most of em' can't tell the difference anyway but better play it safe aye. :o
Younger 250 riders wave at everybody because they think they've joined a big happy family an havn't learn't the truth yet. :disapint:
Retro riders don't wave cause they've just realised their bike that they paid so much for not only looks old,it's also bloody slow and the other slow bikes(Brits)won't talk to them because their Jap. :bleh:
Of course Brit riders don't wave because their busy listening to their engines and counting the miles before the next rebuild. ;)
And sooner or later the powers that be will realise a lot of so called bikers will turn on their own like a bunch of rabid dogs an use this against us
It already works on car drivers,It's the Boy racers,it's the 4x4s,it's the boat owners,it's the horse float owners,it's the truck drivers.
:Oi: Next it's going to be us.
