HI guys & gals
Since the naki ride is gonna be a bit pacey here is another optional ride where we will stop & wait, no one will get lost, still a good distance though
route roughly from palmerston to feilding to marton (to pick up english) to wanganui to raetihi to ohakune (lunch) to waiouru to taihape to vinegar hill to Ashhurst & join the BBQ at meanies place while we wait for them to get back from the naki ??
there may be slight deviations off the beaten track been consulting a map or two but thats the general route.
any ideas thoughts or interest .. ??

what time you think you will make oakune. I am thinking by the time we go up to waitara and come back to wangamomona and you guys have a few coffee stops we will probably hit oakune/nat park about the same time. Although we were planning on coming back via mangawekas rather than vinegar hill but you could still shout us lunch in oakune

prob about lunchtime LOL ... hmm depends on how many come, leaving time if we take back roads gas up wangas then straight through to kune so prob be there about 11.30 - 12
and you can pay for your own lunch .. :nya: hmm been checking out a few roads & can be a few deviations I have never travelled but i know you have ..

I have been torn between two rides  I'd love to do the Naki but I'll save it for the Forgotton Highway which sounds better than sliced bread.
Suggestion Sandra, the road between Fordell and Wanga's is pretty good, long and straight with a few easy bends and comes out on Anzac Pde - perfect for the Para's. If we come out at Turakina, head up 3 a short distance, then into Fordell and Wangas. Also keeps us off 3.

so rough plan to be firmed up by thurs ..
met BP on rangatiki st PN 8.45 - leave at 9 (time for 86 to have pie & first of many lattes) riders brief .. (depending on numbers)
ride to across to feilding & back road to marton meet up with English out the back of marton to turakina valley road > turakina right towards wangas
up 3 til fordell turn off > wangas .. left on anzac parade to garage (meet wangas riders approx 10ish leave after gassing up & saying hi .. riders brief
para para's to raetahi - ohakune for lunch & gas up .. hour break
back to taihape may be a back road on this trip down to Ohingati then back road to kimbolton (break & gas ?) back road to Ashhurst
fire up Meanies BBQ
ok guys thats the rough plan now pull it to bits or add your thoughts
each section will have a lead rider & I ask that senior riders take turns being tail end charlie
pace cruisey .. if ya wanna go flat out keep cowboyz company on naki ride :D

there is only two things that are going to stop my bike.
first is fuel. And I am now thinking we will make it all the way to waitara before needing gas. Second is if girl wants to stop for a break. She enjoys it back there so shouldnt think she will be wanting to stop.

I would be thinking we could be back as early as 3pm. I wouldnt be surprised at all if we beat you guys back. Past nat park it is possible that we will run into each other. If we do we might just break the no sopping rule just for you - then again, we might just snob you and carry on striaght past.

Palmy to Waitara about 250km,good run straight through say 2 1/2-2 3/4 hours,if leaving at 7 easy there by 10,then depends on road and stops from Whanga home, mind you if the bbq like mine it might be wise to arrive later, just as it's about to be fired up after the big degrease. Then again mine not to bad, always clean it after use and oil it then cover it and in the shed, first bbq can take 10 mins to clean it properly, then again a few steaks on it and we're away.Weather blowing like hell today getting worse as day gone on,hope it ok saturday for your rides.

Sorry was meaning those two scally wags.Your trip sounds brilliant, like the paraparas in a car, bike will be fun as well, some neat roads around your neck of the woods, used to take a truck up Oakune way to get 120 or so bags of oats and barley, then over Marton way for similar quantity of hay,dam the horses at the time, when loading and unloading on a sunday night usually 8-9pm when home.Loved the fact that the bags of barley were last on and weighed about 70kg,usually had 40 or so then unload the other 70 or so oats but same size sack only 35-40kg.NOT FUN.

Would've been ok getting all that feed if there was more than 3 racing, most was for the bloody ponies,ex racehorses(current dressage ponces),and mares not in foal as well as potential melbourne cup up and comers, mind you not as many now,at time I think tally was 3 in work,3 ponies(mare and foal and older offspring bitches too),3 mares(2 in foal),4 show horses various categories(i.e slow, slower and hopeless racehorses)and couple for dad's partners friends.
Exercise was good, except at the time, was about to find out emptying truck in darkness has it's pitfalls,i.e forget to keep door open to get into shed next day and need to rip a sheet of iron off wall as 15 bags topple over in the night and prevent door opening.Gotta love doors opening inwards, fixed that put door on rollers.

well i have no speedo on betsy & gas up on her bout 180ks .. hopefully that will be rectified in a few weeks when someone checks out her fuel consumption ..
so from palmy first top up wangas then ohakune hmm then depends on route homE .. but have never actually run outta gas on a group ride yet .. its just when i ride solo i have a problem :killingme

How big's your tank? I'd guesstimate you'd be good for quite a bit more. The Daytona holds 20 litres and will get around 270 ish + reserves. We stop whenever the least rangey bike needs too.

which is normally betsy .. & hopefully after our wee adventure in 3 weeks she should get about 250-280 ks .. woo hooo that will be exciting ..
manwithav8
4th October 2007, 20:56
the monsters tank is 15.5l. All I have to go off is what other monster riders are getting ( in the states) and converting that back to kilometers.. Looks like I should be averaging around 230-250ish. I don't have a reserve switch, just the low fuel light. I would like to throw a 5L gas can in a back back and just ride till it runs out. That way I will know my exact limits and being a carbied bike it will get going again with no trouble..
chanceyy
4th October 2007, 21:05
actually thats the plan with betsy too then we know how many ks she will actually get .. hmm might have to organise that first weekend in nov
manwithav8
4th October 2007, 21:10
I am reading a monter forum at the moment and ther eis mixed views on a good fuel consumption. So I will head down to the petrol station tomorrow and fill up my little 5 litre container. I will ride without it till the fuel light comes on then will pack the extra gas from then on til I run out.

4th October 2007, 21:33
16L... we have carb issues. Guessing the sealing seat area of each carb body for the choke plunger is worn and causing fuel to bleed by into the carb. Runs rough and rich in the low to mid rev range, then pulls hard and smooth in the high end. We did a ride to wellington last weekend and my high strung CBR400RR used 10L for her 14.5L at the 180k mark. Palmy to Upperhutt then back to the little station on the greys bay side of the Paekak hill. Not that far really.
ANyone who knows where a set of carbs are, feel free to drop a line. Shes only had it 3 weeks and is ditching it already for another NC29 CBR or NC30 VFR. Shame really.
manwithav8
4th October 2007, 21:38
have you priced the carbs getting repaired. I'd say with that all sorted it would be a sweet bike
slydesigns
4th October 2007, 21:46
Was told by Neil at AFC its not repairable, the fault is in the carbs cast body and not a part that can be pulled or unscrewed off each carb.

Hi ho, I will not be able to make it tomorrow which is a bummer as it is sounding good turn out wise at least, dunno about the weather, have'nt looked yet. I have just got back from picking up new brake pads and the Ace needs an oil change so I guess i'll be stuck in the workshop tomorrow. Could do with a polish too so I might get all that out of the way this weekend in between checking up on Bathhurst. Car could definitely do with a spruce up too, it's looks like a V8 rubbish bin at the moment. Have fun tomorrow and I hope the weather plays ball for both the Naki rides. I say that coz as we all know it can be beaming sunshine on one side of a hill and pissing down on the other with this changable season.

Weatherwise, it will more likely the east coast will be drier, although the west won't be majorly bad, a few showers. Reasonably windy everywhere, I'll check the latest in the morning. Should be quite sheltered in the valleys, which is where we'll be for most of the time if we go west

Thanks for the ride today, we had a blast, me on the windy stuff and Lis on not surcoming to the flu, weeping fork seals and a sliding rear tyre. All in all, a good day.
Atleast it would have been if she hadn't fallen prey to trademeitis and bought herself not 1 but 2 NC30 VFR400RN's!! Now we'll have 4 bikes crammed into the garage so if anyone wants a bike or 2 we have 2 400's (ZXR H2 and VFR400RN) for sale... please.
On the other hand... we now need to go to either Taupo or Wellington to pickup on the new bikes, so next saturday looks like another road trip if anyones keen.

Long story but the short version is...
She missed winning a silver, red and black on in wellington, so she raced home today early from the ride to bid on her second option, a white, red and black one in Auckland. Won the auction then I arrived home to find the first one hadn't sold after all (time waster with no money bidding and winning) so they offered it to us and her top bid. She bought it, and still has to buy the second won as well... now we have the ZXR and the second VFR to sell... again.

A good ride yesterday thanks everyone for putting up with me on my bornday. Meanie and co for throwing the BBQ, cake and card.
Patently waiting for Mrs Meanie to pick me up after she finishes work to go and get Gerble. May even flock off for another ride. No plans but weathers ment good eastwards. No wind at the moment, birds are chirping and all is well with the world (well at least my little imaginary part of it anyway).
Can't wait for the pics to be posted.

Well with onset of summer arriving & a few long rides fast approaching needing to get more ride fit to handle the distances is necessary
Woke up yesterday to very dark skys, still a fair amount of wind but thought ohh well we can not have perfect weather everytime so yup the ride is still on
Left Shannon & did the most direct route to Palmerston. I have only ridden in strong wind once before so made the pace pretty easy .. what I did find is with constant wind its much easier to handle it’s the blustery stuff that can blow you about a fair bit
Arrived at first meeting point & Bonez (the birthday boy) 86 & Sarah had already arrived & were getting breaky & the much needed latte (for 86 of course). Slydesigns joined us from fielding. Geared up & about to leave when blacksheep made an appearance (slept in) so caught us by the skin of his teeth for sure
So 6 of us headed to next pick up point & met Melissa ( slydesigns better half  ) and off to marton .. where we met English & decided wot the route for the day was gonna be .. plenty of blue sky started to appear but was looking pretty grey for our intended route .. but decision made to stick with the route .. which was a great plan as the weather came good & apart from one wee sprinkle it stayed dry the entire time, so now were were 8 riders
Gas up in wangas & hit the para paras .. quite a few washouts etc but I thought the road was in pretty good shape great to see a lack of pea gravel about & really enjoyed getting on some new road that I have never done by bike before.
Approaching Raetihi & passed a car that had hit a lamppost so glad the first riders were not a few mins earlier … regathered & off to ohakune for gas & lunch .. 86 got the text from cowboys with his adventure with mr :Police:man
After lunch off to waiouru quick stop for two of the party to gas up & just as we were leaving cowboyz & meanie dropped on in .. so now 10 riders headed to Taihape .. as the next section was quite a long one, another top up was needed to ensure we would make it to the next fuel stop .. off we set again & with bonez doing wot bonez does best a pearler wee road with amazing scenery out the back of the mangaweka’s a wee stop to see some local sites ( :nono: it was not sheep) & finally ended up in kimbolton to regather
After heading off in the wrong direction (following blacksheep) 86 quickly caught us & said wrong way .. :o back tracked to apiti & went into dogs territory for the trip home .. quite a bit of pea gravel on this bit & a close call for one of the riders I hear .. but we made it back to ashhurst unscathed
Thanks guys it was a blardy great day & I hear good times were had at the bbq Meanie
Going by the rider who covered the least distance & since I rode the futherest & since I have no speedo hmm rough distance travelled approx 500ks
Betsy ran like a trouper all day, now she gets the degreasing cleaning treatment for being such a good girl ( not stripping, losing her rider, or running badly)
