Sooo, who would be up for a camp out on the Coromandel Tip over the late spring/summer.(Get ya own tent ya weirdo's:buggerd:).
Thinking pre Xmas, or after summer school holidays.
Easy gravel roads, DOC camp areas, and both sides are different in there flura/fauna.
Couple of pics from last trip to get ya thinking.

Will be great fun on the Sherpa, just watch the grip of those knobblies round the 25 corners. Pic below is my tyre after the last trip up, but I was pushing it to keep up with some 250 sportbikes and only had one :shit: moment when the back let go for a second.

Maybe be keen to go on this trip depending on dates. :woohoo: another Corro trip!

I'm keeping an eye on the weather, and if it looks good for the weekend 27/28 Oct I'm planning to do a quick o/night camp at either Port Jackson, or Fletcher bay DOC site.(both on the west side of the tip).
Basic overnight tent gig. Will do a "Heads up" post after Labour weekend. (need to break the new boots in prior to the WWW Adv ride.
Meet in Thames or any other suggestions after a weather decision is made by Wens 24 Oct.:done:

If the weather is a bit"blowy" on the west side for a tent, Stony Bay on the East side also has camp areas. Fingers crossed for a settled weekend.

Unfortunately I'm unlikely to have a bike by then & Rosie only gets back from Oz on the Sat night. We might try for a mid Dec run up there if nothing gets in the way. Have fun.

Didn't do much Labour Weekend, (so saved money by not spoiling the girlfriend:devil2:), so I thought I might try soft bait braid line fishing off the rocks at Coro this weekend.
the rig is quite light, but will easly deal with Pan size snapper, and the soft baits should work well in fading light. Kannys jealous that she hasn't got her learners yet, so can't take the wee volty.
Mmmm Snapper for tea. All up cost of $130.00, + $10 for the PVC to make the holder.(will fit on the Scrambler down the left side, bungyed to a few points.

How does 12.00 noon Sat at a petrol station in Thames sound?
Gives enough time to cruise up to the tip, pitch a tent etc and have a nosey about, or drop a line.
Sunday, shoot across to Stony Bay, and maybe wet a line off a jetty or something. Looks like a anticyclone will give settled weather Sat/Sun.
I think fuel can still be bought at that little shop a few Kms back from the tip.

Just got back a half hour ago after coming back Kopu-Whangamata-Waihi (love that road), plenty of sport bikes out today with not much traffic, was a bloody good trip, 560kms for me, really enjoyed it. :ride:

Dino3310, the soft bait worked great, but the kingies were too big to bring home on the bikes so we let them go again. :bs:

Edit: Had an awesome 2 day trip up the Corro loop, went to Thames and met Tiboy, then right up to Fletcher bay at the end of the road, camped there, then back out to Corro town, over the 309 highway, down to Corroglen, then onto Tapu past the square kauri, did 550kms, something like 250kms on the gravel.

One start is that the DOC farm at Fletcher Bay has a farmworkers' house now used as a hostel, which can accommodate 18 or so people as well as having a good kitchen. You can book in advance, though when we go there for fishing from our kayaks, it's usually OK if you just arrive on a Friday night (and other folk arrive in early hours of Saturday mornings in the summer, as well...).

Next, you go back down the road and then up the other side to Stony Bay, where there's another DOC campground, though tenting only at that one. More fishing, but a bigger walk around the rocks to get to it, rather than just at the point as at Fletcher Bay.

Depends how much riding per day you want to do once you're up at the end of the peninsula.

Hey, Triboy and Deanohit, aren't the 2-piece softbait rods just great for bike-based fishing?

And thanks for the vid. I am almost of a mind to knock off work now and just go.

Cheers.

Does your 200 sit ok at 100km/hr? Our ones are revving their tits off at 80 but maybe they run different gearing?

It's just my digital camera sitting on a cheap tripod fixed to the bars, needs perfecting, but it works for now.

Yea, empty it sits on 100 ok going with traffic, usually I cruise about 90 though if the road is traffic free as the bike feels WAY more relaxed. I'm never in a hurry to get some where and am happy riding my own ride though. :ride:me most of the time!

A few years ago we rode over the MB track from Stoney Bay to Fletchers. A bit dramatic coming down off the hills. Not sure if it possible to get permission but it was a great ride. At the time we had a Transalp, our friends a road going Yam. The road is marked on the maps as a paper road but I think that bikes are now discouraged from using it.

PeteJ
30th October 2007, 14:10
Yeah, I understand that the farm lessees are not that keen on too much public use (for obvious reasons), and the track does not actually follow the paper surveyed road all that well, so they can keep the public off it.

They can keep people off the track, but they can't stop people driving through the paddocks where the paper road is...

Correct. If it is a surveyed and dedicated road, it is not theirs to keep people off.

The problem with this is that unless you have a GPS and have accurately plotted the paper road, you will often not be able to keep yourself on it over the ground.

He has quite a few young cattle, (and bloody big Bulls:eek5:) on the land, and I know for a fact that he is getting a bit annoyed with people treating the stocked paddocks as open slather.
If a gate is left open, (which he has told me happens), hes in for a shitty day mustering on VERY steep country.
But if people communicate with him, he is most accomodating. For the sake of futre good relations, PLEASE don't go charging around the place without letting him know.;)

Heaps of great roads on Waiheke, I went away there with the girlfriend over a weekend. Took the bike over on the ferry and we rode around; not technically supposed to carry pillions, but saw no policemen. Heaps of gravel roads, at first the girl was a bit wary of the gravel roads but after a while she settled in and we had a ball hanging the arse out around corners (pillion == more polar movement == lots of fun :D). Low clip-ons sometimes made things difficult but it wasn't that bad.

If you get towards the east of the island (I think), there's bugger all civilisation and sealed roads; some excellent `adventuring' roads, and right at the end there's all these caves and tunnels to explore on foot. I think they were defense tunnels from WWII?

Cool place. Highly recommended (at least from a road biker with very soft ideas of adventure motorcycling ).

Dipshits ruining it for the rest of us, and land managers over-reacting which wins them no friends either. Fortunately as you say most of them are approachable. The public road through Hira Forest is pretty much permanently closed due to idiots causing the forestry people grief. But talking to them, a permit and gate key might be possible.

[QUOTE=xerxesdaphat;1272371]Heaps of great roads on Waiheke,

Certainly are.
Was a courier driver there for a wee while, so know the place quite well.
The old gun placements from ww2 have the tunnels.(used to move the shells about between the coastal guns.(take a good flash light)
Whakanewha Reqional Park is a good visit, as is cruising around the narrow steep roads that link the regions. There used to be a NZ TT held on the Island back in the 50s I think, and the local museum has clippings, and photos of the time.
Whittaker's music museum is worth a visit and if the weather is good, I would recommend Palm Beach for a swim.
So hopefully the weekend of 17/11 will be fine, as I hope to catch up with JL then. Will let you know.

I really enjoyed the Waiheke roads when I lived there, and there were a lot more gravel roads back then - only the main roads were sealed. It took me a while to learn how to ride them as they are very different to the blue stone roads we know in the North Island. The local quarry produces what we called ''rotten rock'',although it's really a young unformed rock. You can crumble it in your hands.

When they first spread it,the rocks are kumara sized and shaped - these are a hell of a job to cope with as they really knock the front wheel around. The rocks slowly break up,until they are sand, and then they lay some more. The interesting thing is they don't really form wheel tracks, they break down uniformly across the road.So they reach a point where they are just freaking awesome....I could ride these roads much harder than any other gravel road I've ridden, and I've done a few.

I rode a bike once in a rally sprint the dirt track club put on every year - I also used to flattrack on the Rocky Bay dirt track, and hold some races in the land out on Gordons road,we had the use of a lot of land in there. Not really interested in going over,it's a small place and I've ridden every road a thousand times....maybe more.

Yep, that goes for all the paper roads over farmland.

We used to mark out road trials over paper roads in the days when road trials were popular.

In practical terms, you are just out of your mind not to have farmer cooperation. You are guaranteed not to get that if you are not polite and considerate, which includes getting permission and leaving gates as you found them etc.

+1 about the DOC farmer at Fletcher Bay. He also runs the accommodation there.
