Hi all
I just got my learners a couple of weeks back (finally after a year of putting it off :) . I bought myself a new bike and discovered the WOF sticker is under the seat.
I'm new to bikes, so I'm wondering if this is normal?
The shop I bought the bike from obtained the wof and rego, so I guess they should know where they go - but I'm just a little worried I'll get a ticket from a bored MM while parked in town.
Anyone know what the deal is with locations of WOF's?

cheers

http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/warrant.html

Check that out and it says:

It's illegal to drive a motor vehicle on the road if:

it doesn't meet the WoF requirements, or
it doesn't display a valid WoF sticker.I'd say it better be visible.

hmmm might have to go back to the place I bought the bike from and let them know about it.

Any recommendations to where to get the sticker placed or how I mount one? I guess sticking it anywhere won't work as it'll go soggy from rain?

You buy the wee clear WOF label holder and bolt that onto the back of your number plate is about the easiest you can do.

Get a warrant of fitness tag (plastic thing that bolts to the bike) and attach it to the back of the number plate (so you can see it but it is supported).

As the other lads said, grab a WOF holder, they're like $3-4 (I think?) and live on your rego plate

Cool - I'll hit up my bike shop about paying for/sorting it out.

Another silly/potentially dumb question (so many worries at moment) - is there much incidents of people nicking WOF's tags off bikes, if they are in a holder?

One little trick for the wof, before placing it it the holder put some gladwrap on the sticky side of it, this way when your wof expires the holder is reusable, because after six months of sun and weather the wof stickers have to be scrapped out which ruins them most of the time.

I get the testing station to encase it with the transparent stickers they use on cars, trim it down, then use one over the lot and apply to the frame spar, where it is clearly visible, stays dry & mould free for twelve months, costs nothing.

Just to throw in some anecdotal evidence: for around 6 months I rode around with my WOF in my lunch box, I was pulled over once, spoken to by a cop also, neither of them said anything about not displaying my WOF. I'm pretty sure they can run the plate and see if it's WOF'd or not.

Reeks of the "70kph law" - it's the rule, but you don't know which cops are going to enforce it and which ones aren't. It's like a game. The LTSA love to keep motorcyclists entertained with them.

Anyway, most places will give you a nifty little plastic holder. RE: the gladwrap idea: good suggestion but why take the backing off in the first place? Just chuck it in the holding thingee.

I find this the best location....

<img src=http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=25934&d=1139715458>

If you ask at the testing station they normally give you the little case to stick it in.

Old bike I had it inside the screen seemed to last 6 months fine there

Your bike seems to have a peg-leg thar me matey, argh.
Shivver me cylendars.

You might find that an ultra zealous cop who wants to ping you for something can do so for obstructing your licence plate, as in your pic.

Yes, but the overzealous types will usually find some reason if they try hard enough

They can even screw you for a dirty number plate.

Just wet them to remove the label and clean the holder up with some fuelite (white spirits). That way if someone steals the WoF in the holder they can't use it because they can't remove the label without destroying it.

Yep, mine's under the seat and has been since I bought the bike. I think that might be because when I bought the bike the front tyre was a little marginal and the garage that did the wof might have been a bit embarrassed about wof-ing it...

It's one of them little sticky um, stickers (work with me here, it's Friday night and my brain is juggling tired and half-pissed), not the normal label

(bottom one in this pic: http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/road-user-safety/motorists/gfx/wof.gif)

so I can't scrape it off and put it in a holder near the plate. I keep meaning to scan it or take a pic or summat and stick the copy in a holder. I think having it under my locked seat would be stretching the law, but it's not top of my priority list. Maybe I'll do it this weekend... :)

The extreme vibes from the V engine has loosened the bolt and it has slipped down orrificer, i will tighten it up with the spanner in my tool kit up out of the way right now in front of you........

But they aint going to get the number plate when I split past them semi legally on the MW, and neither are people going to *555 my number.....

Mines in my wallet and no cop's ever said anything about it.

The ATNR crew and some NW'ern splitters will tell you how un-visible my plate is, bent and the black and reflecor white missing from lots of it. Never had a hassle with that either, I'm sure it saves you getting *555'ed. I want the personalised plate 1I11II or something similar, a dazzling combo of 1's and i's.

the one on my Vmax is stuck to the toolkit lid which is inside the seat where my gas cap is. (Hehe try figuring that one out) Never had a problem with it even parking wardens here have never raised the issue.

Maybe the thieves are thicker than me, but I'd just use the holder as well, if I'd already stolen it ...

How many would go to the effort of actually unbolting it instead of simply breaking the acrylic holder?

I was gonna post what my plate looks like before but haven't had the bike here. I'm due a rego and might have to pick up another plate at the same time! Remember, this is close with a flash, in the day it's barely there and at night, what plate?

Yeah, and I gotta go get a rego tomorrow anyhow so I recon I'll get one then. I asked the lady at the local testing place what plate they were up to and she wouldn't tell me. I mean, I guess they don't want people just coming and getting new plates all the time but no-one else (customers) were there and it's all on the system and you pay for it so I don't see what she was sour about! Guess it's luck of the draw tomorrow eh!

Reminds me of Bruces old plate after he looped the TL .... or DSS's after he cleaned the black of his with brake cleaner.

A moment for our fallen mates .

Yeah but the rest of the TL matched after that! My bike is sweet except for the dodgy plate. Man he was a real good dude a.

I got mine in one of those plastic see through WOF holders that are just a bit bigger than the sticker itself. This is bolted with one bolt & nylock nut (so I don't lose it) onto the backside of my rego plate through one of the spare holes. I don't bother peeling the backing off as only one side of the sticker is visible anyway and I display the side that has the date and details on it. This shows the expiry date etc so as far as I'm concerned I am displaying enough to meet the requirements. No sticker to scrap off - just tip it out when replacing and remount the holder again. I have never had one stolen. It is tucked away from view generally speaking but 'on display' if you crouch down to look behind the plate. I have never been told at the testing station that it is not displayed correctly.
