Just bought one:2thumbsup WOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Pick her up on Tuesday.

I did a quick search and there arent many posts about this bike. Was wondering if anyone on here owns/owned one and what they think, problems etc.

Also whats the story with running it in?

Running in is easy.
No probs.........I love mine.
May need to tune the suspension to suit.
Pilots are good but I prefer the powers.

Ive never owned a bike from new and never had to run one in. Is it just a case of keeping it below 5000rpm for a thousand Ks or something?

Big Congradulations you have chosen an awesome bike. Bang for buck I believe they are the best buy available in the V-Twin litre bike range. I bought an '06 last June, straight out of the box just like you. We fitted Yoshi aftermarket Carbon Fibre pipes, which are a must and make it sound like it should. In fact I still believe little beats the Yoshi SV V-twin sound. Talk to T.I.E (Andrew), he currently has one. I owned mine for 16,000kms before selling it to another lady KBer. Also Grahamboy (spl) has one.
Run it in how you would like it to perform. DMNTD and I have had a few new bikes in the past two years, so we sorta have the running in part pretty sorted, always something new to learn though. It will take 80-100km to get the clutch, breaks, tyres etc working properly. Dont hold her on the same Revs while running in and certainly dont labour the motor. Wind on gently, getting slighly more aggressive over the first 1,000kms, then you get your first service.
Dont run under 3,000rpm if you can help it, but dont be afraid to rev out to 7,000rpm either in those first 1,000kms.
Also, make sure you get your suspension adjusted to your weight, and the type of riding you will be doing.
Most of all, enjoy it, and WE WANT PIC'S :2thumbsup

Cool glad to help. Talk to Chris, he will be able to give you a good detailed program to work to, and point out any other little tricks Ive missed. We are by no means experts, but have a little knowledge based on personal experience and research to share. By the way What Colour

That's a nice colour but never know why Suzuki only kept red for 05.

Running in, as Unit says, follow manual and I would open it up for a short section every 500kms.

Easy, as it is a v-twin so the running in revs are still fun.

that cracks me up.. limited revs whilst breaking in a v-twin, or the SV rather, would mean not going over 3,000 and you wouldn't want to idle under that..and you really don't want to be sitting at the same revs for very long..

best thing you can do is trade in the fags bike and get a honduh and be done with it ;)

Haha true (says the girl with a black bike in the garage). Also, change your front sprocket less 1 tooth. Unless you want to get horrible speeding tickets its a great way to adjust your gearing to maximise fun and responsiveness. :msn-wink:

Agree, definitely drop the sprocket down one tooth. It's a pity that this makes the speedo over read but it's the best cheep performance mod you can make. Absolutely best value V-Twin out there. I hated the seat though. Walked like a sailor for 50,000k worth of ownership.

:Offtopic: The lady KBer has since sold this lovely black SV to a friend of mine. My partner has a silver one. Next weekend we're going riding with another friend. A couple of SVs and a TL riding in harmony really do sound stunning :love:

Cool, I hope your friend is getting as much enjoyment out of that bike as I did. What year is the silver one? Last years shade was darker I think than previous years. And yes the SVs and TLs do certainly sound stunning, having had a TL before my SV although mine still had standard pipes which was a real waste, but Chris also had one and his was mean :devil2:
So comeon TL man, updates please!

But: When I got my GSXR it had spent it's first 1000km being thrashed by journalists around a race track, and I never had any mechanical problems with it. So that was the running in period, not by the book by a long shot.

And when I got my DR with 0km, I just rode it. And runs very well.

Obviously mine is an older model, but i think one of the best things to do is join www.sv-portal.com. Heaps of advice and expert knowledge awaits you there.

I have made many mods to my bike from posts on that site - the first thing you MUST do is let your SV's voice be heard! Mine may be a leeeeetle loud, but mate, that 90deg V2 sounds good when you can actually hear it. :devil2:

When I had my SV1000s k6 it had scorpions on it. Needed to go into the ChCh Suzi franchise {Sportszone} for a Remap as it was a bit lean in the lower/middle rev range. They sorted it real easy-Imdying on this site is a wealth of SV knowledge...I also was on SVdownunder, which is an imformative site.

yeah - imdying is good people.

Also, the remap for Yoshi pipes is very simple, another good bugger - 98tls - helped me with that. If a shop wants more than say $50 to do it (assuming they are not dyno'ing it as well) then i'd try and borrow a "yoshi box". Google it if you don't know what it is.

You will enjoy it. I had mine for just two weeks under a year. I got running in advice from KB and someone sent me this link: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm The key advice is work the engine - don't nurse it especially for the first 30kms. The best running in kms will be the first few put on by the mechanic who hopefully likes a good blast.

When I picked up the Speed Triple I had a plan for the first 30 kms all worked out.

if ya get the pipes on the back, if ya budget can afford it change ya air filter, im running a K & N all up helped it to breath easier. but remapping sounds like a plan. also TRE helped with the first 4 gears and dont seem to expensive off ebay. still not sure how it works but it helped.
and hows ya running in period? worse thing in the world. the temptation was mean.
also after 4k on the clock i now have a gel seat, huge improvement.
and alot of other extras, but they are just fun

No. The bikes are not the latest and greatest but all are good at what they are designed to do. Road, Adventure and trail.

I picked her up today at 2pm and yes it started to rain at 2.15pm, so i took it straight home into a dry garage. Hopefully will take it out for a quick thrash tomorrow morning.

For running in the manual states:

upto 800km - below 5500rpm
800km to 1600km - below 8000rpm
1600km + wring it

The guy at the the shop also said the main thing is not to labour the engine.

Just need a good day and some yoshis now and ill be happy.

my K3 has stainless Yoshi's and the sound is fantastic. My advice is to keep the std cans just in case. You never know when the authorities will start enforcing the noise laws (if they exist that is) and you'll be kicking yourself if you let the std cans slip.

By the way, I'm very jealous that you bought new, wish I could have done the same but my blue K3 is just gorgeous. Slightly different shade to your model and to be honest I prefer the silver frame and wheels.

Also I agree with the guys who say don't labour the engine, don't ride it below 3K ever, I tend to try and keep the engine at 4K if I can. When I bought mine it had 13,000km on it and there was a horrible vibration/noise with accelerating at lowish revs. The bike shop (twin city motorcycles) was very helpful and they got suzuki to replace the clutch for free. The theory, apparently, is that if you lug the motor too much it can ruin the clutch. Now with the new clutch, and keeping the revs up, my bike is positively singing. Enjoy the bike, they're heaps of fun.

Nice:niceone:, another SV in the stable.

Got me a K6 in blue comming up 12 months ago and absoultly love it. The K6 blue is darker and in my opinion better :bleh:.

I put a set of stainless Yoshis on with the baffels removed, beutiful sound. Im just playing around with a few cosmetic mods at the moment, as well as removing the P.A.I.R system to stop all the poping in the pipes (its a waste of time once the standard cans have been removed), and maybe a K&N with a remap to go with it.

I also recomend having a look, or getting someone with experience, at the suspension and customising it your riding weight and style. I had Shaun Harris dail in my rear shock and it instantly fixed my problem of running wide when I started pushing it. I stll haventmade any adjustmnets to the frount end but knowing the difference it made on the rear I really shoud get round to it.

Yeah i had the demo bike from holeshot for a few days before I got mine and there is a huge difference in handling and general feel between the two bikes. I was going to get it looked at on the 1000km service. Who is Shaun Harris?

He is also very well known for his winning the Ile (sp?) of Man TT race, and about a couple of hundred other motorcycle racing titles around the place.

Unfortuently he is out of action at the moment due to him nearly being killed whilecompeting it the Ile of Man this year.

Really... check out www.neptunemufflers.co.nz... they are high performance New Zealand Made Motorcycle Mufflers. They sound wicked and not to mention look pretty awesome too. When you look at them, you'd think they were carbon fibre... but as most v-twin people know... carbon fibre doesn't last too long on a vibrating V-Twin engine bike. I can't remember how much they were now... I got them straight away when I purchased my SV back in June 06. But yeah I recommend them for sure.
