Can't make this out!

A certain Auckland Suzuki dealer has a 2003 SV1000 naked, 16k on the clock, no service history and totally standard (not even the regulation SV mod of some decent cans). They have a ticket price of $10.5K, but under $10k on the web - so I go and have a looksie and sure it's pretty mint and feels good when I took her for a quick spin, but still in my mind way over priced considering the price of new ones. So I offer them $9k cash with some decent cans thrown in - marginal I know, but I prob would have accepted 9 without the cans. So sure enough they come back and say no, but they offer it for a cash sale at $9900 on the road PLUS a 15% discount on a set of cans of my choice. 15% off a set of Yoshi's/Micron's is still being around the $1k mark (correct me if I'm wrong), so that pushes the price up to around the $11K mark for a 4 year old bike that Suzuki NZ have dropped due to poor sales (I liked the more upright riding position though)! They then come back and offer a brand new SV1000 (the S version I assume) WITH Yoshi's, 2 year warranty, 6 months rego and 1 year WOF for $12.5K!!

So I my opinion they think that the 4 year old naked version sold with cans and no service history and 16K on the clock is only worth $1500 less than a brand spanking new one.

I don't get it - do they get more bonuses for selling the new one's? I can't believe that anyone is going to pay that for the 4 year old one. Looks like another bike that's going to sit on the showroom floor forever.

Puzzled rant over!:brick:

They probably traded in the 2nd hand one before Suzuki dropped the price on the new ones. That leaves them in the difficult position of having paid more for the older bike than they are currently paying for new ones.

Yeah have been in contact with the owner, it all sounds good except that as far as I can find out Black was never a colour option for the 03's - so has it been resprayed coz of an 'incident', hence the streetfighter theme? Has been on TM for a while.

ridicuiously close to the price of a new one for their age also.
You also get a substantially reduced warranty even if the bike
is only one year old (all models)

most harleys will hold and increase their value. take my dream bike, a 1965 panhead decker electra-glide. my partner has this, and shes 95% stock. the parts that arent stock, he has the originals stored. hes been offered $20,000USD for that on many occasions [hes canadian]. he paid next to nothing for it, and the former owner has even tried to buy it back a few times.
the harleys being sold brand new may not hold their value, but the older ones [pre mid 80s] will certainly only go up and up. the newer ones, in the states at least, are being bought only for "fad" and the "look" not for the history. and harley are catering for that, putting more effort into the clothing side than the bike side [like the tshirt with a bike on the front that is clearly a panhead, but has shovelhead printed all over the show]
the bikes being sold to the trailer queens will be sold off cheap with low milage if and when the fad runs down.
id pay more for a well ridden and well maintained vintage harley than i would for a problem filled brand new one.

Don't feel so bad. I'm constantly banging my head against a wall when looking at the price of 2nd, 3rd hand and 4th hand harleys and other cruisers, when compared to brand new in the shop bikes!

hmm, i wouldnt buy a car, lol.

but chances are, id rather buy an old/used vehicle than a new. i went for a 98 virago at $5995 before trade in as opposed to a brand new one for $6 or $7k, simply cos the last brand new bike id bought had more bugs and faults that imaginable. least a second hand bike has been run in, and any problems with the design have already been worked through by someone else. all id have to really pay for is the maintinence as parts need replacing.

I was in a bike shop a few weeks ago and overheard one of the sales people on the phone talking to someone about buying their bike, the boss interjected and told him to really lean on them to do sale on behalf. The same shops had several 2nd hand bikes there, all sale on behalf. I was looking and started talking about one then queried the price, the answer the sales guy had was yeah they hold their price well, what about a brand new one. Their brand new one over someone elses sale on behalf.

Just a thought but free stock driving up the new bike sales/price sounds sweet from a dealers perspective.

I have always bought new bikes and have only had 1 warranty claim
and by buying run out models you get a bike that all the design faults
have been fixed on and at a cheaper price and no concern about how
hard the previous owner had ridden it. The last brand new bike I brought
I paid $5000 for and kept for 23 years and sold for $1000.

What cost $5k 23 years ago? (or more to the point, since you only buy new bikes and you have an '82 now, what cost $5 Gee's 48 years ago? Crikey, my Mums house on the shore probably!!)

ill never buy brand new again... might be ok on models that have had no changes in design or country of manufacture, but where those details have changed, it can only be bad. [ie, some of harleys new models last year had to have bugs worked out, same with the 06 gn that changed nothing but where it was made]
only downside to buying older bikes is getting original parts... aftermarket is really the only solution now.

I wouldn't be supprised if Colemans still have my ol' RG in there for $2.8K even after i said i was second owner of it and only paid $2.1K........40,000K's and 8 years ago.

I had to make a claim on the gearbox for my '06 ZX10...ended up being a little over $7000 worth of work done which would have gutted me if I had to pay it!You have to wonder how some of the repair prices are justified though.

That's totally normal, Just shows the value of shopping around, when I bought the 640 (runout 03 in 04) somebody was trying to sell one 2nd hand for more than I paid for mine brand new. Recently the local shop had the same price on a used 04 as AMPS had on a runout 04 brand spanker.

Cheers
Clint
