The DRZ400E was the obvious choice for an all-round, all-purpose road registered motorbike after test riding and comparing KLR, LC4, DR, EXE, GS, XR and XT motorbikes of various displacements. I’ve also had sport bikes and now find that this type of motorcycle offers so much more potential for fun under any road condition.
The reasonable service intervals allow for longer touring trips. It’s easy to fit a small screen to reduce wind pressure and sheepskin for better seat comfort. It is certainly easier to make these improvements to the DRZ instead of trying to reduce the weight of some 650s.
The small amount of oil held by other dirt bikes makes them unsuitable for daily use; the DRZ on the other hand offers a perfect compromise.
The light weight lets you take it almost anywhere without the fear of smashing some expensive plastics.
This specific one runs so beautifully that in 3rd gear it lifts the front wheel without using the clutch, on standard gearing. Brilliant fun!
It has a solid bash plate, barkbusters and Renthal handlebars. These extras are expensive and essential to make a standard bike truly great and indestructible.
With correct tires (Czech made Mitas) it allowed me to have fun around Ruapuna, travel the West Coast and go through soft sand and gravel with great composure. These tires are cheap, last for ages so you’ll save heaps compared to sport bike rubber.
The picture shows the bike when it had no bash plate fitted yet and with previous tires. Those Dunlops are in good condition and will be included with your new motorcycle.

I know from experience that finding a road-legal DRZ400 for sale is not easy. Get in touch before the yellow beauty is in someone else’s hands for the summer!
