Former MotoGP star Norifumi "Norick" Abe has been killed, riding near his home in Kawasaki, Japan.

Abe, 32, was killed when he collided with a truck making an illegal U-turn.

Abe debuted as a wild card in the 1994 Japanese Grand Prix. He went on to record 3 wins, 17 podium finishes in a 144 race career spanning 10 years. Abe had been competing in Japan as part of the All-Japan Superbike Championship.

I saw this sad news this morning myself in my morning motorcycling emails.

Public highways are incredibly dangerous places for motorcyclists, far more dangerous than race tracks.

The punishment for a momentary lapse of attention or a small misjudgment can so easily be death.

A legend, with a totaly unique style the way he sort of leant off the bike with his chest facing the tank of the bike, and turning his head towards where he was going.....and a nice guy too - super polite. Very sad.
