Some may remember a few months back I managed to whore a heap of photo’s of my TLS. I’ve been a bit quiet since that time because of a little accident I had at the track… I highsided.

That was back on July 12th and since that time I’ve been fixing and modifying it. I now have something to ride again. :)

I’ll keep pics off and link them this time.

This (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Jun04/TLYosh8.jpg) is how it looked before the incident.

This (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Track4/HS7.jpg) is how she looked afterwards. I did manage to get at least one good track picture (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Track4/SPTrack3LR.jpg) in before the incident though. In no time I had it stripped down (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/Stand1.jpg) and modifications began as I waited for parts to come in.

First off was the airbox. The TLS airbox is shite with a whole heap of restrictions the air must flow around (flapper valve). In order to get rid of it the box has to be cut open (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/airbox2.jpg) for the flapper actuator to be removed. Then I used fiberglass cloth (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/airbox5.jpg) to cover the opening. The TL has no issues breathing now.

I went with 520 chain/sprocket to help save with some weight. Knowing of the issues that a 1000cc twin can have with such a set-up I spent a little extra cash to go with something I hope works. This is a STEALTH (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Stuff/520Stuff.jpg) 520 conversion. The rear sprocket utilizes an aluminum carrier with steel teeth. The RK chain is also rated for a 1000cc bike.

I had the TLR swing arm in my garage for a while so this was the perfect time to get it on. It was looking a little haggard (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Stuff/Swing2.jpg) so I decided to paint it black (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/Swing1.jpg). I ran into a few challenges (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/Swing8.jpg) along the way but it was all worth it at the end of the day (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/Swing9.jpg).

I also removed what little emissions crap is installed on the TL for the US market. It's a pair valve that, under certain conditions, adds air to the exhaust flow. It also causes popping when using a full exhaust system. It’s just an actuator (pictured to the left of the shiny cylinder (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/pairvalve1.jpg)) with some plumbing, so it was nothing really.

Since my nice Yoshimura system took such a hit I looked for options. I found someone who had modified a Yosh TLR header (rear section) so that it was now a single out (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/yosh4.jpg). I was able to mate it up to my TLS front section of header and use the TLS mid pipe. I also switched the can from the left side, so no need to buy a new one. I preferred the dual look, but don’t mind this (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/SSE10.jpg) at all.

Rearsets were next on the bill. I have been through enough of the stock ones to realize that they don’t hold up well to abuse. I went with Woodcraft rearsets due to their reputation as a no BS part that gets the job done and that stock parts will work as spares. They don’t look (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/26Sep04/rearset1.jpg) bad at all and the shift up and back isn’t too severe. Since they’re designed for track use they make no provisions for the rear brake switch which also works as a return spring. I installed pressure switch on the rear caliper (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/Rcaliper4.jpg) and found a spring I could integrate with the master cylinder (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/26Sep04/rearset5.jpg). This keeps it street legal.

I added the rear number plates (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Plate/Plate16.jpg) back on with the addition of a front plate (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Plate/FPlate6.jpg) that I designed. I think they work well together (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/26Sep04/TLSR7.jpg).

I still have a few odds and ends to work on but its rideable now. I have another track day on Nov 1st but I think I’ll be a little more cautious coming out of the turn that bit me in the arse last time.

This (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Rebuild/08Oct04.jpg) is how it looks now.

As far as the swingarm is concerned - what differences are there between the TLS swinger and your new TLR one ? (apart from bracing)
:sneaky2:

I like it alot but would like to know the sound difference from the two pipe setup ??

Hi Burns :finger:

My airbox from (member buttz)t he good ol US of A is going to be here shortly, I am really looking forward to having a go at this.

I got a spare airbox just in case I ahem made a mistake :crybaby:

Do you think that you could pm me the step by step shots of you doing the airbox?

I have Rupes airbox pics stored away, but would be good to have a few to compare. :2thumbsup

Thanks

The bracing is the main difference and the reason I did this. I now seem to spend more time on the track where the additional bracing would be beneficial. The dimensions of the swingarm are the same so the bikes geometry has not been affected.

The sound of the pipe is quite different. I do have a clip of the dual set up and will be working on a clip of the single soon. This is what the dual set up sounded like (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/mpg/YoshPipes.wmv).

Hey Saul :)

Most of my pictures of the airbox can be found here (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/categories.php?cat_id=18). Unfortunately I didn't take any shots during the fiberglass process but it was easier than I expected. I also don’t have that many in total but it should show you what you need to cut and how to cut it. I think rupes also cut the lower entry corner off the ‘tube’ whereas I cut in a way to keep it. I think my way maybe easier to deal with the fiberglass cloth and molding it. Rupes also cut the full filter area, I didn’t see the point since the tubes restrictions were removed.

The awesome TLS just gets better. Well done, Burns. That is one *very* tasty customization.

Do you have an Ohlins conventional rear damper? I've ridden an "S" with one and I couldn't believe it was a Tee-El-Zee-Bub! Best money ever spent.

Well done on your pride and joy. :first:

For the rear suspension I chose a unit from a company called Bitubo (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Suspension/Bitubo.jpg). Their part for the TLS is a conventional shock/damper unit that replaces everything whereas the Ohlins is only a damper replacement. You may notice in the shots of the swingarm the empty tabs, that’s why. The difference with this shock is remarkable, best money invested so far.

Very nice write-up, Bern, and the bike looks great! :niceone: You've made a very nice job of it.

Did the two-into-one zorst make a difference to the power delivery? I suppose that's a hard one to answer, given that you did the airbox mods and PAIR valve thingo at the same time...

The bike looks awesome. You have the same 2 - 1 set up that I have on mine, doesn't it sound great??

Unfortunately you're correct. Too much time off the bike and the various additions make it hard to tell the effects each have individually. The sprocket is a +2 so that in it self would make it near impossible to tell. I will say that it feels extremely strong through out the entire rev range. No stumbles down low and high RPM just screams through the gears.

I do plan to put it on the dyno sometime soon. Granted I have nothing to compare it to but if the numbers come out low I know where to look for improvement. The old Yosh 2-2 is reusable with a little extra fundage (a new can).

I managed to put this sound clip (video) together a moment ago… Click Me (http://www.mariposaderojo.com/mpg/Yosh2into1.wmv). 3meg WMV file.
