Hail, O Wellingtonians! (I remembered that's what it were...)
I have an acquaintance (a fellow biker) from Murka who is moving to your sunny city to live/work/sunbathe for a year. The company he is to work for hasn't exactly been forthcoming (or even fifthcoming) with information. It sounds as though he knows absolutely nothing about The Capital and its extreme earthquake risk, gale-force winds and plague of politicians.
Some questions he's asked me so far are:
Any idea of the cost of a flat, there? (Availability would be good too)
How about bike rentals? (He won't have a car)
How's the public transportation system?
:spudwhat:
Answers to these questions, and anything else you can help out with would be greatly appreciated.

Wellingtonians. :)
Public transport really depends on where he lives. If he gets a central city appartment he will be able to get anywhere in Central Wellington on foot in about 45 minutes max.
Hill suburbs in the Hutt don't have such good public transport, though it isn't too bad out Tawa/Porirua.
Definitely buy a bike and sell it. The only rental company that springs to mind was about $400 a week and I don't know of anyone doing bike leases, but White Trash would be your man for that.
Make sure he gets in touch with us so we can take him on rides and show him around and stuff.
Cheers
Jim

Wot 'e said plus:
Rentals, I believe the average in Wellington is $280 at the moment. You can probably find a bedsit in Upper Hutt for $120. Two bedroom flat in town around the $300 mark.
All about location. I have two bedrooms and a gargre for $285 pw in Te Aro/Mt Cook from which I can walk across town to Thorndon in 40min.
(There is no more town left after that)

Yet again it depends where you wanna live and whether you want to live with others.
By yourself between 160 and 250 should cover it.
With others:
Central City 80 - 150
Suburbia around city 70 - 120
Hutt Valley and Porirua 60 - 100
Newspaper watching on Wed and Sat is best. Or Property management companys are even better, 'cept you have to pay some money for their services.

I live in Hataitai, which I can walk through the tunnel and be in central town in 20mins. $250 two bedrooms and a garage.
Definitely all about location....But also what kind of property you wanna live in. Bedsit, townhouse, appartment, stand alone house...caravan.

In general public transport is better than anyplace else in NZ as there is a light rail system and plenty of busses.
Avoid trying to find a flat when the students are looking for them.
When the weather is terrible, it's bloody shocking but you get used to it. When it's good, it's brilliant.
The people are usually more friendly because no one is ever born here, they all come here from ather places to work and have no mates so they are all frigging desperate.
Apart from that tell him to be bloody careful of the motorcycle community here in Wellington because just between you and me, they (apart from me of course) are all a bloody queer bunch and can't be trusted. They drink to excess, ride too fast, indulge in vile carnal practices, use profane language and are habitual law breakers. :ride:

Yeah I do go over it EVERYDAY, But that only means I know how quikly things can turn to shit!
Its still a great ride though.
All they need to do now is ban all 4 wheeled things from going on it. :niceone:
And maybe if we're lucky..
Have transponders at the start, so we can do timed runs.
Thats not asking too much is it?? :spudwhat:

wellys is pretty cheap.
you can get a 2-3 br house for roughly 200-300 in a good suburb unless you wanna flat which is roughly 80-150.if ya wanna get flash you can pretty much double what i quoted, the further you get from the city the cheaper it gets but you dont wanna move those wats{DODGY}As the students start to migrate etc..houses are readily available and the good ones{close to everything}are cheaper and more of, due to owners looking to fill ova holidays.Public transport is excellent.Only problem is the immigrants, their numbers increase daily but if ya from Akland you will find no diff.WELLYS ROCKS.as for bike hire GOODLUCK.Seriously.And we got the real mans hill,The Mighty TAKAS,for serious riders only.Pie cocks were we train if the weathers shit on the takas
