View Full Version : Top speed while passing

The new beast records the maximum speed reached on the trip computer. This is a bit of a concern as I have found while passing in top and even keeping the bike below 6,000prm (running in and below 1000kms) some horrendous top speeds were recorded.
My practice has been to accelerate quickly to get past a car and then slow back down. Passing a car doing 90 - 100 kph with a reasonable amount of throttle means license losing top speeds. Should I be tootling past instead of using the power? Clearing the computer before someone else (wife, cop) sees the top speed from a little cruise is a good idea.

So what's the top speed so far huh?

Remember by law you are still not allowed to go over 100kph even while passing... though some on here will debate this.
I have been pinged 115 while over taking

I know how you feel! I was cruising up to Coromandel 3 weekends ago, sitting around 120 km/hr indicated and the GPS trip computer recorded a HUGE amount over the limit, almost certainly whilst I was overtaking but I simply had no idea where and when. It was probably on the back road between Matamata and Te Aroha, not a major highway. It's certainly something to be aware of on a big grunter.

Use the available power to stay safe, and screw what the letter of the law is, Its your neck, not theirs.
Due to work I have to spend a fair amount of time on the open road in my wagon, When a bike slooooooooooooowly crawls up beside me and spends a stupid amount of time in the close vicinity of my wheels and or the opposite lane as they shag around passing I freakin spew on the dip shits, I want to lean out the window and throttle them...
Oh wait, Poor choice of site for voicing thoughts of violence against people on bikes.......

I didn't get quite that fast as my cruising speed was around 100 - 110. I thought a naked bike would moderate my top speed - but not so sure now. Haha - I see you have edited out the number - good idea and that is why I didn't post my max.

Zip around them and be buggered!
I once got pinged for 113km/ph in my car overtaking a truck, seriously, this was a big thing for the plod that "caught" me. Pathetic!
Quick squirts of speed (even a bit longer ones if the conditions are right) safely executed are fine.

I would never think of exceeding the speed limit . I usually just stay in 1st or 2nd .

If your speedo reads off the front wheel I would suggest popping a mono while passing. If it reads off the rear you could attempt rolling stoppies, but that might require an afternoons practice to develop the required skill.;)
Nice choice of bike by the way.

In all my years of long distance highway driving I've learned to never place yourself in a dangerous position longer than you have to.In other words if overtaking,do it as fast as possible where it is safe to do so(i.e. the road ahead is clear).:2thumbsup

Thats if you stop? why would you stop?
But I didn't see you following me officer? how long where you there?
But I never ever speed  that would be reckless  and we bikers are not reckless
Over taking? time exposed to danger V's speed limit? I know what I would/do if i was reckless but I'm not :innocent:.

Get good night vision gear, only ride at night at crazy speeds overtaking everything with your lights off. Chances of getting a ticket would be alot lower, but then the chances of an accident would be much greater.

Speed Kills.
Though, a friend of a friend passed a car at speeds north of 250 on a naked GSXR 1000, and he's still alive.

GPS's can give false readings like that when they lose the signal then get it back and assume that you were still at the last recorded point suddenly your somewhere else and it thinks you were fair moving to get there that quick. I once had a max speed of 915kmh and I was on foot.

It's good to see that the Triple is keeping your commuting speeds down after the SV!
Look you know that you're breaking the law. Keep your eyes open, and be discrete (well as much as you can on a three cylinder streetfighter).

Ditto. I nail it past cars and get back onto my own side of the road as quickly as possible. THEN I get back down to the speed limit.
This is another thing that makes bike fun because we can pass in smaller gaps than cars can, purely because we've got the acceleration.
Oh yeah, as for your bike recording top speeds, I wouldn't worry about clearing it because you could've done that on the track.

In the Good Old Days, such sensible/practical behaviour was viewed appropriately, and duly ignored. Not so in these Blighted By Safety Nazism Days, where my first ticket in over 30 years was for just such an 'offense'. After following a dirty, stinking 4WD Behemoth for what seemed like an eternity, I efficiently overtook it in the first passing lane I came to, then promptly slowed down again. Mr Plod was eagerly awaiting such murderous behaviour (well, actually, he was hiding in a shrubbery at the side of the road, hoping someone would go a bit fast down the hill in the other direction), and pursued me for several kilometres in busy traffic, before he awarded me a $300 prize and 40 bonus points.
Oh yeah - that was 132km/h, and I killed at least 17.34 people during the few nanoseconds I was travelling at such sub-warp velocities.

It is sad that we have the ability to overtake in a manner that is much safer than 100km ,with oncoming traffic, and get pinged for it. Sadly, mr Blinder and mr Bel may have to start riding pillon with you, and their mate Mr Screamer!:eek5:

This sort of crap drives me nuts and is totally unnecessary. Once again our personal safety is less important than sticking to the speed limit.
Argue if you will everyone, but it is not safe following something that makes you unable to breathe or flicks debris at you, even if that vehicle is doing the speed limit, or close to it.
Say the aforementioned vehicle is doing 90-95kph, we'd have to speed to pass it or risk spending around 12 seconds on the wrong side of the road if we stuck to 100kph. It's not safe to continue riding behind it so this gives us three options: pass it and risk being caught speeding, stay behind it and suffocate or be hit by flying debris, or drop back.
The safety experts would probably say pull over and let it go. This is fine and dandy except we'd catch up to it again and it's back to square one. Plus, who wants to spend their trip stopping and starting like that?

Same.... conditions are ok and safely executed..... what's the problem. I have been seen a few times with no Constabulary infringements, once passed back to the speed limit.
I do wonder though if passing a line of cars 4-5 in a row, cop see's you on the incoming traffic, has he really got a shit show in turning around and catching up with you........ would you run?

On more than one occasion I have been in that situation, travelling with a group of bikes and haven't needed to run. The sensible chaps never even bothered to turn around. Probably at least partly due to the safety of numbers thing.

You're fine even alone provided there's more cars in front of you to pass so you can a few between you and :Police: They're less likely to bother if there's too many cars.

I once got caught[in a cage, with the family-oops]overtaking a stream of many vehicles while in a passing lane. I was doing 137kms plus. The ossifer did a high speed "U" turn and chased me for 10plus kms. [I didnt know]. When he pulled me over he quite rightly went nuts-I felt the death penalty coming on. He had me locked in too! After a considerable rant, to which I agreed was all my fault[At that stage I would have said that the Holocaust was my fault] he eased it up, gave me a warning!!!!! and sent me on my way[at 98kms an hour]. Lucky me, but I wonder if I would have been so lucky if I had been on a bike-as if...:innocent:
