View Full Version : GSXR1000k3/k4 - turning over but not firing?

Have finally got the GSXR's head back and re-assembled it, set up the timing etc. The Stranger kindly did the cam-timing for me while i was preparing for a short trip to hospital, arrived just in time to witness the first attempt to fire the beast/bitch up.... unfortunately with no luck.
Everything is connected and wired up correctly. There is gas in the tank, the valves are all opening and closing at the right time but for some reason we don't appear to be getting any spark?
We checked the plugs which were nice and wet - so it's getting gas at least. The only thing missing from the bike is the speedo/dash - does anyone know if this will stop the bike from starting?
Any useful suggestions are much appreciated.

no idea if needs the dash or not, i would think it would need something there to complete the circuit.
if there was a problem FI warning which you can't see since you need dash to see it.
Could always see if someone has a k3/k4 dash you can borrow for a few mins
to see what problem is

Do you have the bike's wiring diagrams? I'd be all about a painstaking hour or two with a multimeter, verifying the connections.

We have a clymer manual with a wiring diagram in it, the suzuki workshop manual we have is unfortunately missing the electrical section.
Cajun - got a K3 thou sitting next to it, going to try and trouble shoot the problem/find out if it should run without the dash first as it is quite a bitch to disassemble and reassemble the front fairings. I do have a couple of days of work though so could be worth a shot.

shouldn't be that hard, i had our k4 100 striped in less than 30 mins, and only simlar sort time to put it back again.
But dash be best bet for trouble shoot, since FI code will point you where you not pluged something in.

How's the battery? I had similar symptoms a while back.. Hooked up a jump kit, and it started fine, replaced the battery and never had the problem again.

Chuck a new set of plugs in her! I had a similar problem with my gixxer and fuck me if the new plugs didn't start her straight away!
Apparently when they go they really go the fact that the plugs were wet means you're getting fuel but the plugs are'nt supplying the spark to fire her up.

Don't forget, the stand switch, the problem with mine was the coil pickup had come loose, which meant everthing tested correctly, even altered when engine was turning over, just not at the right time.
