Hi all,

I just bought an 02 R1 and it doesn't have a steering damper.

I don't do any high speed riding but I'd like to attend track days etc.

I've never experienced strange steering behaviour on a motorbike before but I've heard a few horror stories.

Can someone please explain what a steering damper does and recommend whether or not I'd need one? If it's recommended, where would be the best place to buy one?

Any advice appreciated!

Basically does what it says: dampens the speed of movement of the steering head by providing hydraulic resitance to any movements. Some (like the HyperPro RSC) can distinguish between high and low-speed movements and dampen each differently)

Practically: it tames the front end and helps to prevent head shake, or at least prevent head shake from becoming a full-on tank slapper.

Most aftermarket dampers are adjustable. More damping can make the bike harder to turn but will prevent more of the head shaking.

I've seen people slap a damper on when they don't really need it. Some feel a bit of a head shake and instantly think that their bike is unstable and needs a damper, when really they could solve the problem and improve handling greatly by sorting their suspension out. They still use them in top-level racing though, so obviously they still have a purpose even on a very well set up bike.

Your local bike shop could hook you up, or call Robert Taylor, or go to eBay.
