Timing coil? CR125

Hey there, I just swapped my chopper for a '94 CR125 which isn't sparking. CDI is sweet, have been told its the timing coil. Never struck a timing coil before, what does it cost to have repaired or being a pretty able mechanic can I do it myself?

Timing coil? I haven't heard those words used before, is he perhaps talking about the ignition coil? If he is, the ignition coil is very easy to do yourself, it's the bit on the other end of the sparkplug lead.

The other option, which is actually to do with the timing system, is the pickup coil. This is the bit that senses when the little magnet on the flywheel goes past, and sends a signal to the CDI to tell it to make a spark. It's inside the engine, next to the flywheel.

Being a two-stroke this is pretty straightforward; no oil in the crankcase to drain out or anything. Unbolt the sidecover that covers the flywheel, and you should see the pickup coil -- on an RZ250 it was down the bottom, about 10mm long and 5mm wide. A couple of screws and some wires, very simple to swap a new one in.

Of course that's assuming that that is actually the reason it's not sparking.

Yeah that sounds like the case, old owner had already replaced CDI thinking that was the problem. Appreciate it guys.

to remove the flywheel you will need a puller, a universal jap bike one that will fit the CR will only cost ~$20 your local shop should be able to confirm & or take a digital picture with you. Use some grease on the end that pushes to protect the crank end. A sharp tap may help release it when tensioned up, but don't go crazy. Remove the nut & washer first obviously.

Send plate with coils on it to JH rewinds as mentioned.
