I had word from my insurance company today that my CBR has been written off and the claim approved. Apparently the cost of repairs exceeds 75% of the market value of which I have it insured for. My house & contents claim for a wrecked helmet and Teknic jacket has also been approved!
Over the last couple of weeks I have had time to reflect and seriously consider my options and so I have decided to stay off bikes for a while :disapint:. This is just part of my normal cycle where over the past 18 years circumstances have led me to 'sacrifice' my absolute enjoyment of motorcycling for more important life affairs.
I must say that the past 8 months riding has definately been a major highlight for me, especially meeting & riding with so many of you KBr's and managing to do 4 track days at Pukekohe for the first time in my life - what a buzz!
Take care out there everyone, and most of all enjoy the ride! :spudwave:

Hey Zed
I have to admit, I would feel better writing off a bike, and getting a brand new one, as apposed to having one fixed (But I don't mind, I know Sawyers will do a spiffy job, and have it better than new :sweatdrop ).
Also, while I was waiting to hear about mine, I was thinking that if it was written off, I would also have reconsidered what to get to replace it...
I hope you do take a short brake, and get back into it soon, as you know it's a whole heapa fun.
Take care,
Dave.

So I guess your crash knobs were a waste of money, huh?
Do you have a list of what was needing repair? Maybe if it had a bent frame could understand, but if straight frame, you should enquire about buying it back from insurer and repair it as a track only bike :2thumbsup

Its no harm to take a break and focus on other things in your life. I'm building a new house soon and have to face the reality that the bike will probably have to go for the time being. But thats cool because I know that in time I'll get another bike, I've got heaps of other things in my life that are equally as fulfilling (windsurfing for instance is something I'm more into than bikes) and the new house on 1/2 an acre will be bloody choice for the family. I'm sure with the good weather on its way you'll be back on two wheels before too long.

I suppose under the circumstances of the bin yes. The left side slider got ripped off in the accident gav but I think it saved the rear-set from getting munted.

Forks bent, radiator stoved in, front disks & wheel stuffed, head & side fairings and rear cowl fairing stuffed, basically anything protruding from LH side of bike (except rear-set) damaged. Have decided against bidding to buy it back as the money is going to be spent elsewhere. ;)

When I first read your post I felt a little sorry that you had written off your bike. After all each one of us can sympathise with your loss. There but for the grace of God go I, and other such sentiments.
But as I continued to read I came across the above quote, and my empathy turned incomprehension. Seriously Zed who are you kidding. There is no sacrifice for the more important affairs of life . These are done willingly. That's why we make changes to our lives because of the importance of them. As a professed Christian I would have thought that you would have known that. But no. You turn an accident into something where you expect us to believe that you are making some kind of sacrifice for more important matters. I use to think you are a fraud but in that I was wrong. I now know that you suffer from a more serious malaise and hope that you have the grace to recognise it.

Zed, Nothing wrong with giving it away for a wee while or for a long while if that's what you honestly prefer.
I'm happy to hear that you've weighed up the options and decided to take a break for now. We all have different priorities and responsibilities, and it sounds like you've given the event due consideration.
Maybe one day you'll be sitting in a cage on the motorway, a bike will come splitting past you and you'll decide that you want back into the game.
I hope that you don't give up KB though, I haven't agreed with everything, or probably most of the things you've had to say here, but your heart is in the right place.
Promise me though, that a while won't be forever, we can't let the biker gods claim another rider!

Just an idea but you could do what I did and spend some of the insurance money on a cheap bike to race in F3? The race track is after all the safest place to ride.
Keeps you off the road and will greatly improve your riding skills too. I've seen you blasting around Puke so I know you have what it takes.

What a WIMP.....I wrote my new bike off the day after I got it.....I picked the next one up while still on crutches and rode it on icy roads; obviously not a REAL biker. Funny how these more important things weren't there till your bike was smashed. Seems you have a lot more in common with WKID than you thought. Here today gone tomorrow (and no deserter jibes please).
Just trolling for a rise out of you :blah:
My bike is still in the garage as I can't afford to insure (and register and tax) the bike over here yet. I made some choices that seriously harmed my income, and the bike will wait until my family are lloked after. I guess I could register and tax it then sell it to free up some money.....but then it's not a good time to sell in the UK...and I'd have to buy one again next year.

Now you'll have a chance to be a "Born Again Biker" sometime.
I told you a while back you really need two bikes to ensure this kind of break isn't necessary. Dirt bikes like I have are a good backup because they rarely get wrecked in a way that you can't ride them after a bit of tweaking e.g. straightening the bars or whatever.

Sorry to hear that you crashed in the first place Zed. Atleast you're still alive and able to make choices. After my 2nd serious crash (broken leg again) I felt I owed it to my Folks to give up road bikes for awhile, but it wasn't long before I got back on a dirk bike to keep me sane. What I'm saying is maybe trying a slower pace for awhile might be good. A different style of riding, maybe a cheap jap cruiser. Get you through the traffic, cheap to own and run compared to a high performance bike. There's no shame in a crash shaking a riders nerves (I'm not saying that's the case with you) and breaking the bank a/c, just a shame to totally give up something that's so much fun. All the best anyway Zed. :spudwave:

Hey mate sorry to hear of the bin sounds like some experience ay. I hope that you are not hurt too much?
Back in the 80s I gave away bikes for a time as I had a rather close encounter with the back wheel of a Holden station wagon with my head. I decided that I wanted to marry my girl and did have a reason to continue living. 20 yrs later I've have several bikes, just needed to cause those little motorcycles racing around in my veins were driving me crazy. brought a trail bike XR500 cause they go slower....yeah right changed the sprockets and I was one loose goose again. Got hit by a drunk driver.... oh well such is life. Sold it when I went to OZ. Brought another one but binned that when I fell alseep going to work at 3:30 am, binned it again at a round about, throtle stuck open, did some majour damage to my self with that one the hip still plays up at times. Moved to Auckland brought another one to commute to work and study. Walked away from a head on at Matamata, rebuilt the bike as soon as I could breath normally again, sold it when I got a company car. Binned a loan bike when I hit some desiel on the Rotoma's. Been accident free since then thank the Lord. My Mrs has forbidden me to have any more bins they sure cost a lot and it takes much longer to recover these days.
So one day you may well be back on a bike again
as Mark said...
What I'm saying is maybe trying a slower pace for awhile might be good. A different style of riding, maybe a cheap jap cruiser. Get you through the traffic, cheap to own and run compared to a high performance bike.
My cheap bike cost $3000 had it for 4 years been all around the country used and abused every day, now its time to convince the Mrs that I need another larger cruzer as I've been good and cruzers are safer cause they dont go as fast.... well that what I've used in the past, maybe extend the investment to a classic bike as well. At least she is warming to the idea I hope, time will tell.
Zed keep in touch with us here as I have noticed that others are bikeless at the mo and keep posting, one has to keep the dream alive because it will never go away.

I see no connection between my comments and your interperation of them. Zed binned his bike and then claimed the moral high ground by saying that he was making a sacrifice. In response to my comments in a later post he further commented that he (Zed) was misunderstood by his wife. While he and I have had the odd slagging match my comments were made in all sincerity, and what was his response??? some smart arse answer questioning my manhood. He came onto this site belittling what other people rode - scooters and other small bikes are beneath his contempt...big bikes are what god designed for man to ride, those who ride scooters and 250s are going straight to hell. After upsetting everyone with his bible bashing he had the audacity to post a poll asking everyone if he should go or stay!!! This is someone who loves attention,he'll be back alright, but not on a scooter!

Yep,Zed's right...the bigger the bike, the better the rider - I'm kinda mediochre (sorry, you'll just have to wait for Maarten to come back to correct my spelling).

...As a rider of a 750 I fully expected him to crash, riding a 750 requires skill a mere 600 rider will never acheive.
Blah blah blah. I only need a "mere 600" to run rings around you old man.

Motu, as I am reasonably new here. I have a question, Do you go fishing ALOT.
I think you may need a bigger hook. I have gathered you are th local fisherman. :yeah: As I know nothin about Zed I have no opinion on this matter, but I do have one question why would anyone take anything someone says on the net to heart. Crumbs if the truth be known I own you all on my trusty 250.
Motu, hows your bait, Im going to try some new stuff, I'll just dig it out.
While on the discussion of the inferior 250 I remember this:

Just for the record I do not take Zed seriously at all. That would require myself to accept that he has a modicum of intelligence. You may not have noticed that Zed has to back his opinions from the Bible. Nothing difficult in that and as there are so many Christian interpertations (demoninations) one can justify almost anything as approved by god. As for his credibility he once claimed in a post that he did not know the meaning of the word gay and then later posted that he "worked " with homosexuals. I shall leave you to come to your own conclusions on Zed's integrity.
My post to him was made in all sincerity but as I have mentioned earlier all I got for my concerns was a sarcastic reply concerning my manhood. Well so be it. From now on I'll give him no quarter.
If you want to defend Zed then go for it but be warned if you show any hypocrisy with your posts I shall provide some humour at your expense

Oh,he'll be back alright - the second coming of Zed...all hail Zed.

...You may not have noticed that Zed has to back his opinions from the Bible. Nothing difficult in that...I'd love to see you attempt to backup your every opinion from within a book! Not difficult you say? You would probably fail miserably because you value your own opinion too highly. :thud:
...he once claimed in a post that he did not know the meaning of the word gay and then later posted that he "worked " with homosexuals...You talk about my lack of intelligence? I explained it to you once before - the original meaning of the word "gay" is not homosexuality. I honestly read the title of the thread "How Gay Are You?" and surmised that it could be an innocent/humorous thread, but when I read it I found out it was about queers! If it had said "How Homosexual Are You?" I would have probably avoided reading it like I do with other such thread titles.
Calling me a liar will not change the facts Skyrider.

interesting....
To tell the truth, I havent really got to know Zed outside the site. However, the brief times that I have met him he seemed personable and vaguely friendly. On the site it is another matter altogether. Maybe it is the conversation topics or the inability to effectively communicate irony/sarcasm through text that influences my view.
In the same way, I imagine that someone like Spud or Lou might be very different in the flesh - who knows, they may even get along :gob:
Methinks that when you do decide to get back into biking, you need to get out there on a CB600/SV650/generic medium capacity non 'sports' bike. As HR and CK say - slow things down a bit, enjoy the ride for the fresh air, scenery, company and destination. There is no need to push yourself to enjoy the pleasures of motorcycling...

You'll find out if big bikes are for you someday and maybe then you'll see my point of view.
