Myself and my friend have been trying our hand at making a carbon fibre exhaust for the K6,K7,K8? gsxr 600's and 750's Mircon style.
Or any thing else that they might fit.
Could modify yourself to fit any bike.
Will look like this but in carbon fiber
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=6453
Not finished yet but getting their.
They will be slip on just the same as the mircons
And just wanting to now if any one was interested in buying one if we made a batch of ten or more to help cover costs, and soffen the dent on buying our new dirt bikes.:niceone:.
Cost will be about 900 bucks not sure what a normal Mricon cost as, i got mine damaged.
My friend has already made a exhaust for his old 02 R6 out of the carbon fibre, oval style and tested it under hot race conditions at the track, and it handled the heat:cool:.

pm me if you are super keen.
If we don't get the interest then we won't bother making them.

Aee you using a VER, or baking a high temp epoxy?

Ill get back to you on this one, im trying to get the word out, and "worm"(name on KB) is the carbon wiss. We already have a special high temp resin for the job.
The hard part will be finding a high temp clear (gloss) to finish the carbon in to handle the heat.

I think $900 is a bit pricy for a home job Cam, if you can get down to round the $600 mark, I think you will be far more succesfull

And might pay to mention Micron less in your post since google will pull this site up...

The hard part will be finding a high temp clear (gloss) to finish the carbon in to handle the heat.Mmmm, that's true... but if you mold them correctly, they'll look sweet straight out of the mold, and you'll get that sexy 'dry look' carbon like they have on F1 cars

/edit: I've got some spare parts I've made that haven't been dressed, I might hit one with some spray can 1200 degree clear... might do the job.

So far this is just an estmate, most likely drop if we make a large batch of them.
I no people won't have what they can't touch, so once we have a few made, we will take them to track days like the "suzuki track days" then people can try before they buy.

Have talked to a couple of painters and VHT clears are mainly matt, which is a bummer, as a high gloss peice of finish carbon looks the bee's knees.IMO

industrial carbon tends to look the shiz on bikes, race fit styles. Could be keen, but not at $900.

loose bro! $900 is what they charge in bike shops for a scorpion can with carbon and titanium... and i can get it cheaper from the USA via ebay. There is a guy over there doing a similar 'slipon' for the 06+ R6 and he's only charging $150 or so USD.

Buddy L

How much is it to buy a similar pipe at the shops?

R6_kid
16th October 2007, 17:36
It's $650 for the same pipe as yours but in black, delivered in two weeks, from ebay.

I think I ended up buying that carbon exhaust your mate made for the 02 R6. That thing was sweet and I didn't have any problem with the carbon fiber:2thumbsup

We are using a High temp vynalester resin.. Wots this VER???

imdying
18th October 2007, 11:22
VER = Vinylester Resin :yes:

Are you post curing it? I've built a wee oven for the purpose, soon to be a bigger model :D

What type of laminate are you using, and how many layers? 195gm ish? 5 layers?

worm
18th October 2007, 17:21
VER = vynlester....:niceone: ahhh got ya
Fibre glass first layer (as carbon won't flex enough to remove from the mould) then two layers of carbon. Havn't decided wot weave to use yet.. yeah it has to be post cured. Otherwise the resin we have wont actually cure.. Be interesting to see how well it comes out as it will have to be hand layed, wont be a mould finished exterior. tooo hard to do:oi-grr:

imdying
18th October 2007, 17:36
It should be easy enough to make a multi piece mold, but of course laying it up is then the challenge  Perhaps infusing it with an internal presurised bladder might be the go?

Are you bagging it or infusing it? I assume bagging? What temp are you post curing at?

shityarn cunts you are all going to crack stiffys over my pictures next week lol

I just quickly read this thread and it seems some of you know what you are on about, its cool that you guys are set up yourselves, (eg making an oven)
pm me some pics of what you guys are up to and maybe I could help with any questions you might have about - prepreg, resin infusion, vacuum bagging etc

Getting a structurally perfect part, no excess resin, an ideal resin to matt ratio, and I can use clear coat to complete the part, but do have a suggestion for fixing it? Giving the mold a very light coat of resin, letting it B stage, and then laying up, didn't really make as much difference as I was lead to believe, and I don't want to try that with clear gelcoat as it won't take the heat like the VER. Bagging with quite a good (strong) vac pump, it's probably holding around the 29" mark if I had to take a guess (haven't put a gauge on yet), perhaps I'd be better of at 25"?

There's always something like this.Yet another blue n white gsxr?

did some inquiring around and getting "Coby New Zealand" to do the mandrell bends that we need, about a 30 dergree angle in a 2 inch pipe about 7 inches long. the best for these mufflers.
But finding it hard to get someone to mandrell bend preferated pipe that will be used inside the muffler. Not an easy task that one, have send the item down to "Coby" to see what they can do. less then 200mm between bends with multy bends in a 500mm peice of pipe.

Autobend down here will mandrel bend anything the way you want it, but stainless perf tubing is hideously expensive. I believe they can source it for you though.

Less than 200mm between bends is doable on 2" pipe if I recall correctly. They can do down to some short distances, but, when they get down to their short clamping dies, you can expect a little crushing or marking of the tube. Not a lot, and not worth losing sleep over imho, but worth noting. If you ring them, they'll be able to tell you the minimum distance between bends, either done perfectly, or marked if the distance is too small.

Trying to communicate that sort of stuff over the phone to some people is a chore, but they were quite helpful.

They also have stainless mandrel bends and donuts galore, not too badly priced too.

your a champ imdying, see what Coby new zealand has to say has they have my samples if they say can't be done then im ringing up your guys and sending them pic's etc.
the piping exhuasting will be inside the muffler and out of site.
Getting pricey, this muffler game.
280 buck for 20 heavey duty D clamps in stainless (two for each muffler) that was heavey discounted as well, hook ups.
Will make 10 mufflers and see how we go with selling them, most likely take them down to the suzuki track days and let people have a try on the track with them.

Getting pricey, this muffler game. You've got that right :/ I'd be a lot better off if I could weld stainless myself, but I've other tools to get ahead of a welder.
