View Full Version : CCC loop on 17th Nov

cooneyr

Anybody keen on a Christchurch, Cheviot Culverden loop on Sat the 17th November? Plug, Transalper and I did this back last November and it was a good 300km day with a mixture of seal, gravel, and grass sections with some good views.

Ride from Chch at 9 am from the Peg to Greta Valley via the seal, down to Motunau Beach, up the coast via gravel road and grass public access farm track to Gore Bay, across to Culverden, then west to Cheviot via grass/dirt Random Spur and gravel road then home via Pyramid Valley (gravel) if time or otherwise Weka Pass (seal).

Can be done on adv tyres although grass farm track and Random spur road could be slippery if wet.

All are most welcome to join in the fun - this is not a difficult ride. There should be no real mud on this track just grass or clay/stony farm tracks that if wet will be a bit slipery but will be manageable with some outriggers (legs) and low speed.

Slightly off topic, but what is the random blue "lake/pond" north east of your location?

The factory just slightly north east of the ponds is a cement factory i.e. settling ponds. The have been making cement (originally slaked lime) in the area since not long after the Romans developed it.

The photos are about 2 years old as the factory is almost completely demolished apparently. It stopped working back in the 80's. Haven't actually be across the river too look at it myself. It is in Finland by the way - the river is the boundary.

Sorry I wont beable to email you a map before this weekend (about to head to the train for the long haul back in 2 hrs and back on Sat) but do a search on KB and you may find the map of last time (around November 2006). The start of the farm track north of Motunau is a little hard to find as is navigating your way through it so you really need to talk to TA or get a copy of the Ken Sibley books and have a good read.

Peachys got a registration/WOF type issue that's going to prevent him taking to the road so we are taking the chook chasers (to quote timg) to the Waimak on Friday instead of scouting the CCC ride, not that it's a ride that needs scouting, but if you read the whole thread you'll see he and i were going tomorrow as he couldn't make the 17th.

It should be worth the effort if you do join us.

J and I had a peek at the first section on Sunday afternoon.
The road in to Motunau has a spectacular view and that's before we really even get started. Although it could just be that I live in the centre of the city so don't see that kind of view every day. It's almost distracting.
The shingle leading to Limestone rd is well swept right now so will be real easy riding.
The grass is super green up Limestone Rd itself and if the weather is even half decent it will be an awesome day.

All I did was provide the encouragement, you did all the work. One thing I would like to add though is that we should all bring a fiver as we have promised a dozen to each of the landowners. This may add slightly to the difficulty of the ride but don't worry there will be plenty there to help if it is needed (Plug didn't use to call me the Crane for nothing).

This deviation may mean that we have to drop Pyrimad Valley and come home over Weka Pass depending on how time goes. I don't think this will be a problem though as I'd take access to land such as this over a public road which can be ridden on any day.

Well this is a good trip to have ago at then. Wet weather gear is good and hopefully we wont need it but you never know (looking good so far). Warm gear is also a good idea. We will be stopping in both Cheviot and Culverden for fuel for those who need it. I think the whole loop is 300km so not everyone will need to stop though (hopefully the big tank turns up before then).

As for other spares I wouldn't stress to much if the bike is in good nick, if not then a spare for anything major that might fail. If you've not done much slow running before bring some spare spark plugs (and the tool to change them).

Where we stop for lunch depends on the time. Last time we stopped at Cheviot but there is also a nice place at the high point of the Random Spur Road. I would suggest you bring food but we will almost certainly be in or past Cheviot round lunchtime if you want to buy something there.

Is this deviation going to be suitable for a pillon?

I'm not 100% certain as Ive never seen the track and I've never riden with a pillion. On a more positive note the track is a power pylon track so should be OK for 4x4 5 ton trucks.

There is actually two tracks, the first of which is the easiest one, will take about 20 mins. If you decided the second track looks a little difficult there is a sealed route option round to meet us. If the first looks to difficult then you can just stay put as the second goes back to within a couple of km of start of the first.

The only part of the ride this will be an issue for is for the trip to Motunau which will be about 1 hour. Therefore if you do 90kph you will be about 10% slower so need to leave about 6 mins before us. If you leave the Peg about or before 8.50 it will be all good. The peg is the pub on the left at the motorway start as you head north through Belfast. Pretty much the last building on the left as you head north.

Please note when you get there it isn't actually signposted anywhere as 'the Peg' but yes it is the last Pub in Belfast when going north.

No need to ask really, pretty much any sensible rider is welcome.

I only said sensible because we want to leave other road users and the property owners with a good impression and happy to have us back. All that leave the place as you found it with little to no footprint or evidence we were ever there kind of thing.:)

depends on wether you do the extra private land deviation and Pyrimad Valley on the way home. Yes our way to Cheviot (via Motunau, Limestone Rd, Gore Bay) is also a bit further than the SH1 only route too. Zig Zaging all over the place will do that to a route.

Hi all,

Much as I love you fullas, I'm afraid I've sold my soul to the devil again, so will be unable to make tomorrows ride yet again.

I've been offered a comercial shoot in Chch which I originally turned down explaining that I had this ride to go on, but this evening the stakes just got a whole lot higher, to the point where it's now just not viable to pass on the shoot ( lets just say the shoot now buys quite a few sets of tires, and a whole heap of fuel for rides another day

The forecast is fantastic, so ride safe, and hope you all have a great time

Take some photos boys, and post a bit of a story.....

One a side note, when cleaning my bike with the "foam" function of my water blaster I managed to spirt my oil cooler fins and now they are bent over. On closer inpection after doing this I notice that there are heaps of fins bent over. Any ideas on if this will impact/cause the biek to over heat? Given that DR650 have no oil coolers (from my casual glances at them it appears that way) then I wouldnt assume the impact minimal?

better look at the stock stone screen/guard in front of the oil cooler.

Previous owner of my DR had put a screen on the back of my oil cooler too as he noticed a few dents on the rear fins as well. He thought that a few stones bouncing off his knees or boots or something were hitting the back of it.

On another thing, I pulled the helmet camera remote apart today and found a wire that had come away fron the circuit board.... can we fix it??? Yes we can!

The Mistress
18th November 2007, 20:24
Ever since I’d found myself sitting sat slack-jawed, enthralled by what I was watching at the KB adventure bike porn evening, and marvelling at the serendipity that I’d just happened to have bought a bike that could take me to those places, I’d contracted an itch. The itch is the one that I get when something fascinates me, strikes me with awe and provokes me with fear. Like a scratchy clothing tag or a fine splinter, the challenge needles me, working away, till at an opportune moment I’m compelled to scratch it; square up to it and take the plunge.

And so I met up with a bunch of KB adventure bikers at ‘the Peg’ for my eagerly awaited maiden adventure, the Christchurch-Cheviot-Culverden (CCC) ride. It was a grand turn out; a total of about 25 riders on a spankin’ sunny morning with a deep pacific blue sky. It happened to be another maiden’s inaugural run, as Helen-of-Troy fronted up on her meaty R100 Beamer.

After cruising north and winding off to Motunau beach, the fun began with stretches of gravel road, leading into aromatic pine forest and on to farm tracks through lush pasture. Having tasted gravel in Danzies Pass for ‘the Brass’ and Kanari Lake at the Bottled Lightening rally the previous weekend, I was pleased that my initial terror was being replaced by cautious amusement. ‘Hey, that skatey roll over the stones and the wee skids from changing down were kinda fun!’ Suddenly, I was careering through chunky rocks in the grass tracks and then, as if by magic, I landed on the top of a hill with grand views of spectacular, sprawling valleys and ranges and the sea. ‘Yes! This is what it’s all about!’ I inwardly exclaim. Poignantly, an exquisite, iridescent, exo-skeletal creature landed on my arm. Though beguiling, it was in fact a portentous omen for what was in store: it was a dung beetle…

We turned around and headed on to the next leg, backtracking down the hill. Hang on…as if I’d slipped into some twilight zone episode, or crazy David Lynch film, the way back had transformed into a gnarly obstacle course, bearing little resemblance the track I’d been on just 10 minutes before! Big, squelchy, muddy ruts had materialized and I was heading straight for them! By some miracle and a couple of well-timed outrigger spring hops, I got through, only to spot a long stick in my path that mesmerized me like some kind of hypnotic wooden snake. My fear of running over it, coupled with my fear of running straight up Helen’s backside, caused my spectacular face plant, complete with girly shriek, straight into an enormous pile of cowshit.

Not only did I have a scraped knee, broken indicator, stinky jacket and bruised pride to grapple with, but I knew the rest of the day I’d have to field the boys’ cheeky asides: “Hmm, nice perfume Mistress, there are more subtle ways to attract males you know,” ”I think I’ll ride up-wind if you don’t mind Mistress”….

There was nothing to do, but get back on, lift my chin up and be staunch. In fact, I was so keen to prove how a little muck didn’t harm me, that 20 minutes later I took the other side of my bike and trousers for a mudbath, by attempting a nifty steering manouevre amidst a great, dirty puddle in a rut. Nice. I now resembled GI Jane in camo gear.

Moving on from the less auspicious episodes in my day, the reason we all ride is for those joyous epiphanies that these fantastic machines provide us with, right? Those moments of clarity and exuberance; exhilaration and single-minded focus; a spiritual wow; the biker high. And there were plenty of them throughout the day.

I thrilled at my first slush through a deep, puddly stream (all legs akimbo, flicked back as if in gay abandon to avoid a soaking). I became a member of a small colony of motorized ants, swarming all over the vibrant, green hills. With grim determination and surging adrenaline, I rode straight up a steep track filled with rocks the size boxers’ fists. I learnt to use my body suspension, standing up on the pegs negotiating tricky terrain. The sheer variety of terrain demanded such a range of different skills that kept the challenge biting seductively. What would I be seeing, doing, feeling next? This was no second-hand screen action, it was real life. Just like the video, but I was doing it!

The satisfaction is hard to describe, but I know most of you reading this have a passion for bikes and just know what I mean. Maybe that ‘knowing’ is what creates the easy, uncomplicated camaraderie that we share. I want to thank all you guys who organized, helped pick up bikes, gave me a push, opened gates, checked up on, gave tips…you know who you are. Hopefully, myself, Helen and the other MBTB dirt-munchers (more balls than brains) added to your days’ entertainment.

After those warm fuzzies and continuing the ‘sharing and caring’ theme, here are my top tips for new adventure riders:

1. Reduce your tyre pressure: dropping mine from 26 front + 30 rear to 21 and 23 was putting on a pair of running shoes after wearing stilettos. (All you red-blooded, cross-dressing males will know exactly where I’m coming from.)
2. Low gears are your friends.
3. Steady throttle on.
4. Divert your course to avoid large obstacles like big muddy ruts if possible. (see consequences above)
5. Having said that, don’t let hypnotic wooden snakes mesmerize you (obstacle fixation?), look further ahead and have blind faith that you and your bike will cope with what ever in its path. (In fact, the latter can be successfully applied to many, but not all situations!).
6. Don’t lean into corners on gravel, let the bike tip but keep your weight central.
7. Give that standing on pegs malarchy a bash. Try to balance, feel the added suspension.
8. Ride across a wee creek, Wey hey!
9. Keep yourself fairly fit and strong. It can be hard yakka, especially with a heavier bike. Plus you’ll bounce and recover better if you decide to spend some time communing with the earth.
10. Invest in arnica cream.

Hey guys,
Sounds like everyone had a fun ride.
I was the one who got the puncture at Motunau, turned out to be a mission!
Once I changed the tube due to 4cm long split (lesson for everyone, carry a spare tube, which I was) we discovered a tear in the tyre beading with exposed wire, so after applying large quantites of tape to the bead I tried to limp home. 2km's later tube blew again, bugger tyre bead rooted beyond repair, at this point I called it quits and parked bike in local farmers driveway. After hitching to SH 1 I was forced to catch a shuttle bus back to Christchurch as no tin topped bastard would stop to pick me up. Once in Chch unfortunately all bike shops were closed due aniversary weekend. Luckily my next door neighbour who some know (Alf) has an identical Dakar so I borrowed his whole rear wheel and headed back up on the Sunday with wife and kids in tow to collect bike.
So bike finally back in garage awaiting a new Dunlop 606 for the Dusty Butt, bring it on!

I did upload them TA but i later found out picture file sizes are too big, around 850 and the max is around 500 or so, but being a moron with computers i aint got a clue to reduce the sizes.Talk me through it if it's simple and i'll get them downloaded.
Cheers Tony.

crikey what do you guys have for picture editing software?

oldrider

While on the subject of shit.....
Animal poo is corrosive - hence why most farm bikes look like crap.
So clean your expensive adventure bikes well & the longer you leave it, the harder it is to get the dung off.

ACF-50 (anti corrosion formula) Google it and read about it's benefit for motorcycles.

It's a space programme product and is available in NZ mainly for aircraft applications.

I have been trialing it in my Pro-oiler and general chain maintenance but am going to get a spray can to treat my bike.

ACF-50 is a penetrating lubricant with specific anti corrosive properties.

Sounds like you guys had a great trip! :wari: Cheers John.

This is my first attempt ever at capturing film footage, editing and posting. Kinda obvious but gotta start somewhere right. Batteries dies around Random spur road so no more after that.

P.S. Here is a link directly to Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU4mL29TCOM) if the embedded vid doesn't work.

That's mighty good cooneyr, will add nicely in to the stuff I have... eventually.
Nice to see myself riding from a third person perspective for a change too.

Hmmm...
Wonder what tyres?
BusaJim and Alfonz were TKC80's...

Mine wasn't the tyres fault, I had overstretched the beading exposing some wire putting the tyre on the night before...operator error

Like a scratchy clothing tag or a fine splinter, the challenge needles me, working away, till at an opportune moment I’m compelled to scratch it; square up to it and take the plunge.

etc,etc,etc.......

To all those stuck on the seal that are getting bi-curious, take it from The Mistress: rough and dirty rocks ; )

Well there Mistress, have you ever thought of giving up teaching and getting into professional writing, as that's far and away the best report I've ever read.... :2thumbsup

It may not have had all the factual or technical details some riders rely on, but became more something where any one of us could easily picture themselves in your place :ride:

Keep up the prose, :hitcher:and good to see you're a convert.

Hope you had fun at Reefon the other week:sherlock:

Cheers dudes,
...actually I think I'm a travel writer stuck in a teachers body:doh:
It's the biking that inspires, nay, compels me to write...
The main thing is that you can see yourself there---but please correct me if I got anything majorly wrong or have any technical improvements--especially the tips! I'd hate to see some poor other newbie follow crap advice and suffer from it:pinch:...hmm maybe I should add a disclaimer next time :sherlock:

I hear or read a rumor in another thread that FQ ended up with fractured ribs.
Bugger FQ, sorry to hear that.

Yep, 3 fractured ribs, and a new helmet through insurance. Oh well, the helmet did its job protecting my head and the ribs did their job protecting the squishy bits inside. What's the saying - can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs? These things are to be expected from time to time. I'll be back :soon:

Dude that is a total shitter. Hope you manage till the bones heal. As I understand it there is nothing that can be done to stabilise them in the mean time. I guess this means lots of RnR round home?

Take it easy and heal well.

Cheers R

Having experienced this a couple of times now, the best advice I can give re being comfortable is to get someone to strap your ribs with a wide bandage every day,<_< as you'll find it more comfortable the tighter you can stand it:headbang:

2nd thing is avoid humour at all costs:no:

Bust ribs hurt like hell if you laugh

All the best for a speedy recovery :doctor:
