Hey, I just got my restricted license here in NZ, but don't really feel like waiting a whole year to get my full. I heard that you can sit your full license in Australia and then get it converted back in NZ without waiting a year. Anyone know whether this is possible as i'm going to Australia in February anyway.
cheers.

Hey there,
YOU CAN DO THAT!
I moved here to N.Z from ozzy about 5 months ago.
My suggestion for you would be to go through morgan and wacker Q ride and get your full licence through them.
If your going to Queensland, they run it through Brookside in Brisbane.
The website is http://www.morganandwacker.com.au
Go through these guys, get your full licence and come back here and change it over to a n.z licence. It cost $84 to get the n.z licence through vtnz at takinini.
Well...that's what i did.
Cheers

But you still have a learners period over there as well - so I dont see how you are better off - see detail by state http://www.hondampe.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/hondampe/Home/Motorcycles/Training+%26+Licensing+%28HART%29/Student+Information/Australian+Motorcycle+Licensing+Rules/

No it totally does. You can convert it over easy, no testing needed. People take holidays in Rarotonga for that very reason.

Mate I just checked this out myself.
Was in OZ (Sunshine Coast) three weeks ago
To get your full bike licence in Queensland, without going through their learners system, you need to have held a full NZ car licence for three years.
You also need a credit card and some other financial document with your name on it ie a bank statement etc. Your Passport and a document showing your Queensland residential address... ie a rental agreement or a power bill, phone bill etc. (Must have your full name and queensland address on it)
Then you can get a learners licence from Queensland transport for $15aud if you can answer their 5 dumbass questions.
eg When should you wear a helmet? or Where do do place your feet when riding a motorbike? etc
Take this learners licence to Q-Ride and for $306aud you get to participate in a one day rider safety course. If you can satisfy Q-Ride that you are a competent and safe rider (I dont think anyone fails) they will issue you a Q-ride certificate which you then take straight back to Queensland Transport and they will swap your Learners Licence for a Full Queensland Bike licence.
The licence is produced on the spot and issued to you imediately.
Then on your return to NZ you can swap your Full Queensland Bike Licence for a NZ Full Bike licence on payment of a fee of course.
Hardest thing is getting the documents with your name and a Queensland address on it.
Maybe you got some mates that can help you out there.
Cheers

Having lived in Oz the procedure is as follows:
-Take your NZ license to Qld Transport, Answer 25 Q's get 23 or more right and you are given your OZ license.
-Take you Oz license to the counter and pay $10-$15 for a learners bike license test (5 Q's) get them all correct you now have your Learners bike license.
-Take that license to Morgan & Wacker rider training centre and pay for your practical test, (of which they will first make you sit thru a 1 hour rider confidence session including bike accident videos.
-Next you go out to the course and do a series of riding test, (slalom, cornering, emergency stopping, parking etc)
-now you go on a road test with the instructor,
when you get back they will decide if you went ok if so they will award you your confidence certificate for a full license, if you dont pass they will make you sit the testagain with a trainer on the stuff you lucked out on till you get a pass.
-Take the certificate to Qld transport and you will be given an updated license with both your car and bike on it (full opens)
what you need is documents to prove you live in QLD first before you even get your Qld car license this make the whole thing difficult if you are only on holiday...............???....You call i spose....is it worth the hassle??
Just trying to help you with my opinion.
Cheers

As at October last year you could do as Matt says below. Give them a call tomorrow, can't hurt to ask.
I do actually happen to have a rarotongan motorbike license.
it seems like it will work! You need to take in the Rarotongan full bike licence, proof of your address (bank statement), pay $154 then sit both a practical and theory test, then you will be issued with a full NZ bike licence. I even asked "what if i have never had a NZ bike licence before", just to make it glaringly obvious, and the kind lady said "no thats no problem, as long as you have a rarotongan licence". So that sounds like good news to me, other than actually passing the tests i would say its a cinch! ...
