Well, my good friend KK knows a few good mods hes done for his NC30. - A couple comt to mind -

Skateboard wheels for crash bungs, Lion red can holding his exhaust together internally, the list goes on :) :killingme

In all seriousness though, just wait till tonight when he gets back from the waikato rally, he knows everything VFR400 - so he'll be able to give you some good advice.

Hey dude - whatever i tell you dont do, whos bike was the only one that wasnt ridden into Tokaanu in the weekend? :(

Firstly, Pistons/valves, no, VERY expensive... if shes done over 40-50,000k's then a head skim could be in place to increase compression.

Second: NC30? find a straight thru 320mm-400mm long, 44mm internal diameter muffler, hacksaw your current one off and biff it on the end.

When youve done that a re-jet could well be in place, regardless you should throw an extra 0.5mm washer under the needles and depending on what model NC30 you got and its standerd jet sizes, change the main jets up a bit (unless UK spec 120/122), then wind the Air bleed screws out half a turn to compensate for the extra rich setting your idle would otherwise be at.

Lastly now youve helped free her up a bit regarding exhaust, and we are pushing some more gas through, freeing up the airflow wouldnt go a miss. Cut your current paper element out of its housing, take the metal mesh behind it out by chopping hte tops off hte 6 plastic blobs that hold it in, put a peice of motorcycle airfilter foam (i use Twinair) or if your poor just get it from pararubber (about 1/2 inch thick stuff, depending on density) throw it in before the mesh, then tap 6 wood screws into the plastic bits left over so they can hold the mesh in but can be taken out/in often and clean the foam out.

So now you have free flow foam filter (i personally use filter oil in mine, not certain how necessart it is as alot of people disagree and say its fine without)

There are further mods that can be done and possibly are done to/around your airbox, ask around and find out what others say as mine is my own race secret (not one worth saying as my bike hardley goes well).

Anyway thats just some general info that will cost you sweet F all to do, and will get most bang for your buck. Bare in mind doing exactly what i have said will also undoubtly give you some minor carb issues, like i still get a flutter @ 6,000rpm. IMHO its a good baseline to get started on, and from there if i had the money i would now take my bike to a dyno and check out exactly where shes running rich/lean, unfortuantly i dont and im limited to jet sizes (Cant afford them either).

If you are on a unlimited budget, RLR Motorsport in the UK (always winning the 400 class at the isle of man) can get over 80hp from a NC30/35 engine, or G-Force Performance in the US can build a reliable 450cc 85hp+ engine... but for the money, I would suggest buy a 600.

There is a lot thet can be done to these engine's but a pipe (try Cycleworks)and jetting would help it flow nicely, then maybe work on the suspension.
there is only so much HP you can get out of a 400 without spending a LOT of money.

But what KK said sounds like a good start...
