View Full Version : Definition - Squid?

Always thought a SQUID was someone who couldn't stick at the speed limit (or slightly slower) for any length of time, but periodically blasted off ahead into the distance. Now I've heard of something meaning someone who doesn't wear protective clothing except a helmet. To me, that's the definition of STUPID!

I thought it was someone who repeatedly does stupid things, brags about it, and never learns from their mistakes. None of them on this site

A squid is an irresponsible motorcyclist. The term is derogatory and common among motorcyclists in North America. It is generally associated with a new or reckless motorcyclist seen riding erratically and/or beyond his or her capabilities, often without appropriate riding gear.

and i thought a squid is something that lives in the sea, some strange people even like eating squid too?

Well given that definition in wikipedia, it sounds like there are a few squids here given the threads that float around all self-reporting stupid behaviour, tickets and the like!

They could also be called "squids" because of Paramedics' slang for motorcyclists. In a bad accident without leathers or other good protection, it's possible for the torso to become detached from the legs. At that point, the intestines can drag along behind the torso - thus giving a grisly "tentacled body" appearance.

eeeeeewww!

I absolutely love this definition:

Based on similarity between the way a "squid" rides and an actual squid swims.

* Squids can appear unable to change direction while swimming without first coming to a near complete stop. However, once the squid does stop and change directions, it can very quickly accelerate back to its regular swimming speed. Beginning motorcyclists commonly have trouble negotiating turns, and must slow down to unnecessarily slow speed, while at the same time have a tendency to ride very fast on the straight sections of the road.

That's a cheap number plate... only 5 quid? lets see... British Pound to the New Zealand Dollar, basic conversion says $2.70NZD to one British Pound, so that means the number plate cost $13.50?

Well, $699, actually. Bit of an extravagance, but I've wanted that plate for years and it was still available.

The idea behind the 'five quid' thing is, of course, that my bike is worth about that much ;)

I thought it was a police/paramedic term for a motorcyclist that has had a high speed prang, and has broken every bone in their body-hence limbs become limp and 'squidlike'!! I could be wrong!:msn-wink:

Good to see that for years everyone has been using this term, but actually no-one agrees what it means and for why.

Tried to get my "squid rating" from that link, but that is the world's longest survey! Gave up after 6 hours. I thought cosmo quizes were in-depth, jeez.

Aww man.. that was me for my first 2 months... It'll probably be me again once I get my bike back, because I'll be scared of crashing again (after getting nailed by someone not giving way and coming the wrong way down a one way street).

then ridden off?

Funny, I'd hate to have it done to me but would be classic to see, Hobson St at 5pm anyone?

I THINK it came from a derogatory name for enthusiastic but stupid young riders on bikes, made from joining parts of two words, from memory it was something like SQUirrely IDiot or similar.

Anybody able to add to this??

98tls
19th October 2007, 00:14
Originally it came from a bike journo who remarked about "squirrelly young kids on bikes"yea i know theres no such word,he meant guys riding in an irratic kind if way etc.........it moved on to be the term for sprotbike riders wearing no gear blah blah blah.

Didn't realise the term's origin either - interesting definitions, all seem point to the same thing. I gave up slowing down for corners long ago - my aged cruiser don't go that fast, so there's no point.

not done it to a friend, but i did do it to an asshole who opened their car door while i was filtering to the front of a queue of traffic. wanker.

i just waited till he closed the door, pulled up alongside him and reached in through the open window took his key out of the ignition and zoomed off. the look on his face was priceless.

i did however stop at a gas station down the road and explained the situation, giving the keys to them. all the staff were in hysterics.
