I need to complete my protective riding kit and I need a good back protector. I have 2 piece leathers that fit well, ixon stuff. I dont care too much aboput the price as I am paying for my safety.
Any suggestions?

I realise it sounds obvious, but, try before you buy.
You want one that is comfortable for you on your bike. If it isn't comfortable one day you are going to stop wearing it. That may be the day you really needed it.

hey dude, I will definitely try before i buy... cheers, just wanted to know what brands are good out there... maybe some models better than others.? This will reflect on where I go to 'try' as most shops only stock certain brands etc...

I think the July or August Superbike magazine has a review of back protectors. I can always give you a ranking according to them this evening if you like?

where is the write up in superbike mag, (http://www.aqua.co.nz/sportsbike/%5Cbackprotectors%2Epdf)
#1 is Alpinestar.
Another one to look at is the quasimoto ones, i have one of these, and its great.

you can also get "proper" ones that fit into your jacket if it has the appropriate cavity.
i got a quasimoto one also, its my first one i've owned so i cant compare but i'm more than happy with it especially for the $$, it exceeded my expectations.

I am lead to believe those are not proper ones, they are a basic and in most jackets are just a bit of hard foam and do not have any plastic to give strength.
and don't have the flex to mold with your body like a correct one will

nah you can get ones with the hard plastic linked thingies like a real one, just that they dont have a waste belt and fit in the jacket. probably not as good as a full job which will "fit" better, but I'd say they're a vast improvement over the hard foam to which you're referring (at a guess).

Saved more than a few KB riders in the past, this is the newer model and is a bit wider.
Forget the Jacket ones, if you arent wearing proper pants it will hang out the bottom of the Jacket............and if it doesnt it wont protect your tail bone so then its useless.
I can courier it to you in the am if your interested
Cheers

I don't think that Superbike mag actually intend to rank the products in their '10 of the best' segment. Over a year's worth of issues they've never seemed to claim that the product in spot #1 is superior to any of the rest.
The CE rating segment in that article would be one to take note of though, as it is seemingly backed up by some in the medical profession.
I personally feel very secure in a Spyke one once it's tucked in properly, but then it's only rated at CE1, so I may change in the future after finding out a bit more about the relevance of the CE standard testing.

I've had a Dainese back protector with a nice velcro waistband and shoulder straps for years now. I bought it for skiing - but I compared it to one used by a biker friend of mine and it's the same thing.
It's comfortable, it'll stay put where you want it and it feels like it's good stuff (I hope I shall never have to find out for sure though).
That being said I don't think there's any huge difference between the protection offered by the good brands (Astar, Dainese, Quasi, etc...)
Also I wouldn't trust the padding built into the jackets to save your spine in a bad crash.

I just bought a quasi jacket (which is brillant :niceone:) and was throwing about the idea of a back protector. I thought to myself "I dont ride on the track (yet) so is it a bit of overkill". But after reading that article i'm definitly going to get one. I'm only 21, I dont want to wind up with major back problems for the rest of my life!

I don't think so. In fact, you'd be amongst the most generous KBers I know. And I've already got a Quasi Back Protector - wouldn't be without it.

Buck Buck took me up to motomart after our ride today.:niceone: I bought a forcefield branded back protector..:Punk: Just wanted to say thank you for posting the info about the magazine article. I made sure it was a level 2 ranked protection rating. It set me back a bit more coin but I feel like it was worth it. This model was more slim fitting and comfortable "to me" due to its construction of rubber meshing instead of the plastic plate type. Try before you buy.
Motomart has some very cool stuff in there:eek: Its a good thing that I dont have a credit card haha:laugh:
I feel good I finally got it sorted:niceone: Cheers for all of the input, advice and offerings

I actually think those ones that slot in a pocket are "improper": the effectiveness of the thing depends on its proximity to your body, and having it in the jacket might allow it to move.
Dunno, but I wouldnt risk it.
I have a Minotaur one but I dont think he is doing them any more. I had a Quasimoto one but I gave it to a mate: it was slightly too long, and pushed at the back of my head while riding a street bike (more upright), so I got one that was a little shorter. I like them too, because they hold my ever expanding guts in a bit.
I tried on an Astars one yesterday and didnt like it: It looked brilliant but didnt feel right so the adage of try before you buy seems to hold true.
Now I have one, I wear it ALL the time.

I've got a Itialian-made Clover Pro-1. Its very comfortable. I got it brand new still tagged off TM for $45. It also comes to insert into jackets, although I also feel you would get better protection with this as a sepperate item.
I commute everyday and wear a back protector. It takes 10 secs to chuck on. I also wear OTT boots (Fox Pro Forma) and Fox race-level Knee and shin protectors under my work trousers.
When I was 17 I was trashed coming back from hockey by a car - hit from behind. My AGV helmet cracked but I slid along the road on my back and only got concussion and leg-rash. I was wearing my kevlar reinforced DFV hockey stick across my back and am convinced this saved me serious spinal injury. That was almost 20 years ago so now I have a 'real' back protector.

Nice post, My jacket that I had made for me (if you have seen me you'll know why) has a aftermarket back protector built into it upon MY request, not the maker of the jacket I would like to add. After reading a few of these posts i'm having a re-think about that idea and might remove the one from the jacket (bugger coz it's stitched into place) and go to a stand alone protector.

Another fan of Quasi back protectors and gear. Also have the chest and back protector combo. Great price and fits well. Hopefully I will never find out how they are in a crash.
