It seems the time has come for me to venture back out on 2 wheels once again! By this time next week I will be the proud owner of a new (to me) blue Yamaha Radian! I am so excited and buzzing, cant wait to take her out for a slow pootle around the block! :devil2:
NEDWN III reckons it rocks!! (he may even have got his knee out for the test ride)
Sounds so sweet.........and best of all.........MY FEET REACH THE GROUND!!!!!
Needs some TLC, nothing that a DMNTD Valet and a seat recover wont fix...
Woohoo!

Hahaha We won!.........LOL The tank looks BIG, but really is teeny/weeny. I guess my Ventura pack will contain a spare fuel tank instead of lippy :bleh:
As far as 150kms goes......well i will let you know soon enough, I am told less than $20 to fill so am not anticiapting a huge distance range. Luckily this baby is for the commute thang, plus the odd lunch thang, and who cares there are no shortage of petrol stations.....:niceone:

Mom's got a bike
Mom's got a bike
I could not think of a word to rthyme with bike
Well I could but it was 'Dyke'
And I knew that I would be dead meat
With my carcass strapped over her seat
So I will just like to say
That I knew that one day
That the new Ohlins
Could not put up with her pins
And that she would go and end up
Having a riders seat for her butt
And making sure that Maha Man
Would at last be allowed out on his own
...But no her new bike is also blue
to ensure their partnership still sticks like glue

Surprising even to me. It has been maybe 18 months 2 years since I have ridden a bike, scooter time in Raro does not count......LOL. This is the biggest cc bike I have ridden in so many years I dont want to tell :pinch: It is fabulous! Took me right back to the time when anything was fair game, even if my feet did not touch the ground! Trust me you dont forget, the first corner out on the open road, leaned in on an unfamiliar bike and thought, best counter steer through this baby........LOL.

Well today we had our first proper outing! A bit over 230kms so a fair test. I am delighted with how she runs, and the corrected bar and lever position makes the world of difference for sure. Only really shamed myself out once today so that is good. The trusty sidestand cut out switch got me! :o
Need to get a bit of a tune up done, as she is reluctant to idle, and starves for gas if i turn the choke off. Yes this is an old fashioned beast. As I have ridden all day with the choke on full (bogged badly if I attempted to close it) I was a bit concerned about fuel consumption. MSTRS reckoned 150km tank, the guy we bought it off said 200. Me, filled it at 182, and had not hit reserve, so think it actually has a reasonable distance capability if all is well tuned. Now all I need is a friendly someone that knows a bit about balancing 4 carbs, who has vacuum gagues? and wants to come play :msn-wink:
However, the old girl clips along at a good pace. Does anyone know what this engine should redline at? I am sitting at 6k doing 120kmph, and she still has plenty of get up and go. Only problem is I am looking for another gear. Guess I will either get used to it or change the gearing a little bit :devil2:

Funny you should mention DMNTD, I am considering stripping the mags and getting them powder coated :2thumbsup got to be some perks in working for a company that owns a powder coating plant after all....LOL
Once upon a time I used to spend all day in or near a motorcycle workshop, you do pick up a few bits and bobs of knowledge along the way, but you know what they say.....a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous
Admit to being a tad anxious attending the ride as my first real outing on a totally unfamiliar bike, but, like I said apart from the little side stand problem, it was no worries. Slow manouvering (my main concern due to clutch control) was a piece of cake!

Well, I certainly know I have ridden over 400kms today.
What a fantastic day to be out and about. I spent my time re-learning gear selection for corners, in no hurry so apologies to anyone I held up today. Finding out how the lovely handles was my main focus today. I have discovered a few things. (will be asking the KB brain trust for some advice soon).
Third gear, gives wonderful engine braking, allowing a smooth exit from tightish corners, while 4th is the best sweeper gear to use. Pity of it is I need more road time, my hands are not fit for the constant gear changes :baby: Guess I will just have to spend more time out there :niceone:

I have an oldish bike, of the type that I used to ride, the old fashioned kind, with individual carbs, that feed individual cylinders, it has a petrol tank, two wheels, and an engine that feeds power. This baby does not smoke, nor leak any oil, but.........she is 16 years old, and needs some TLC!
I also want to ride her, so I need her to be tickety boo :shit: that be showing my age.....LOL

I think the xj myself.
Reconsidered telling you what I think is wrong so here goes;
? the choke cable is seized
? the idle needs to be adjusted up
? the carbs need to be balanced
? forks need a heavier weight oil to firm them up a bit
There are a few other little things that I have noticed, but you need to see them to know what I am talking about, and whether they are contributing to my idle/surging/choke issues is something I have no idea about, you would have no problems telling me I am sure.
FROSTY
12th November 2007, 09:52
all your carburetion issues might come down to the choke--Might not too but hey no worries.
Forks--Yup yamahas of that vintage had woefull front springs. I betcha it aint the fork oil.(or at least the fork oil on its own)
Does it dive to the point of CLUNK under braking?
The fueling issues I can sort out and depending on your budget I can Improve the front end or strip the forks out and send em for respringing/reoiling
The brakes probably feel a bit orrible too.
Why doncha come for a ride to my place and Ill get it sorted for ya

You are a lovely thang!!
Will be in touch shortly. In the meantime here is a link to the ride report that I did after we went out this weekend, it explains a bit more about the handling at the front end

The tyre is stuffed! Big time, I have attached a pic that may be fine enough for you to see the wear pattern, whatever it is being replaced, I need to know if there is a reason for it happening or if it is infact just old and tired....LOL
I tend to agree with you about the choke, it really does not seem to be functioning as it should and will account for a lot of the fuelling issues I am having.
Thanks FROSTY!
FROSTY
12th November 2007, 16:28
check thew tyre pressure--on one of those bikes with that tyre it should be 32psi --If I started to get head shake I'd check tyre pressures as first port of call
Re the choke-pull da tank off and disconnect the cable--then push the slides across as far as theyll go (youll see what I mean when you look at the carbs

sounds like youve found the problem
Now a temp solution to the idle etc issue.
-right in the middle at the back of the carbs is a 16mm knob--turn it half a turn clockwise --that should speed the idle up a tadd

I've had a few XJ's in my time...they're bombproof. See if XJ600 diversion parts fit as they're quite new and go for bugger all on ebay. Find out your disk sizes and measure the mounting bolts as you might find early FZR (not R6/thundercat calipers unfortunately) 4 potters are a straight fit.
