Most of us, from our various past experiences feel that the NZ police have it in for us bikers. I thought so also.
Yesterday while returning home on the northern motorway just before the Albany exit I spotted a motorbike copper. He was sitting at 80 behind a petrified cage. I obviously overtook from the other lane giving him a friendly wave of the hand, having nothing to fear. Lights go on and he pulls in behind me. I'm quite surprised he pulls me over.
I stop on the barrier as instructed and leave plenty of space for him to stop. He gives me 100 meters or more to slow down (unlike some car cops who have tailgated me 'angryly' scaring the geepers outa me). He comes over, I take of helmet and balaclava for courtesy sake. He inspects my bike comments a lot on it (looks like a transformer apparently), knows a shit load about it... asks about how it feels on the track etc (he conducts advanced rider training)... then casually asks for my license has a look and says with a smile just checking.
We sit on the barrier like old mates just chatting for 15 mins about his bike, my bike and also how he doesn't like unsafe cagers and how he ticketed one for not noticing him earlier on. He was pretty pleased with himself for that and I was too  He referred to all bikers as "us" and not "you'all" then let me go... he shook my hand, thanked me for stopping then proceeded to clear the exit ramp for me by waving traffic off until I took off. When he shook my hand and thanked me for stopping I didn't know how to react and started stuttering like a fool. Ride safe he said. Fukin legend.

he is a really nice guy and all that but if you are doing anything that you shouldn't be he's just the same as the others and throws the book at you (but thats their job i suppose)... he knows he stuff and doesn't turn a blind eye towards bikes and he actually looks out for them which is a good thing.

Period. I'm man enough to face them as they come. I was v impressed. Only 2 other car cops have been nice to me in the past; didn't ticket me for doing 61 in a 50 coz I was safe as. Update: Got pulled over by a muffti tonight comin back from shopping for the weeks groceries. Roads were empty just the two of us... I was sitting at 65 crusing along thinkin how heavy my bag felt (he was stealthy as and as I hadn't intended on a hoon left my radar at home). He checks me out, pulls me over but does not ticket me, in fact is very friendly. Almost like how ud go upto another biker with a bike u thought looked fine and ask him all about it. .... only he was in uniform and his cage had flashing lights and his partner kept lookin at me like he wanted to arrest me!! Even shakes my hand and introduces himself ... again I am taken aback and start babblin like a retard...Lets just leave it at that >.< Just goes to show that there are good cops out there too folks so respect them for who they r and not what u think they are....has really changed my opinion on cops in general....have a rethink folks.... petty generilisation is for the uneducated.

So were you slowly pulling away from him before he revealed the disco lights? if you weren't, and he was keeping up with you then he was unlawfully speeding as well... for the police to go above the sign posted speed limit they must be showing the disco lights and in traffic have the siren bleeping.
On saying this... he could have pinged you when you hit 55kph

I dont mind being pulled over for no reason other than checking out my licence/rego. If it means down the track they're recovering more stolen bikes (potentially mine if the situation arose) and disqualified drivers, thats cool with me.
Only been pulled once ever on the bike, and his reason (I shit you not) was that I looked a bit "dodgy". Hahahahaa.

Actually, there is no legal requirement for Police to have lights and siren activated at any time. Nor Fire and Ambo. There are departmental rules, but these do not extend to a legislative requirement.
If there is, could you please point me to the appropriate legislation.

There may not be a requirement for cops to use lights and sirens, but they have a requirement to follow road rules the same as everyone else. There is no specific exclusion in the Land Transport Act for members of the emergency services. Section 10 of the act is entitled "Road users and others to comply with ordinary rules and emergency rules". The section simply reads: "A person must comply with the rules".
There are specific exclusions for certain offences and penalties, however. For instance, section 95(6) states that the mandatory suspension of a licence for 28 days for speeding offences does not apply if the vehicle "... was conveying a member of the Police in the execution of urgent duty, if compliance with the speed limit would be likely to prevent or hinder the execution of that duty".
So in SkidMark's aforementioned example (assuming the provided details are correct), following him for 2kms at under 60kph just in case he happened to go any faster would not count as urgent duty in anyone's book.

Isn't the first time either that I've been pulled simply for a friendly chat.
I like meeting friendly officers... he liked to speed in his mufti off the lights though, easily 65 in a 50 with lights off... but then again apparently they don't need their lights and maybe he was late for a drug bust and couldn't compromise his position.... never know
