Hey I just want to say to anyone that is wanting rider-pillion comms, or actually any sound in their headset at all, that I can fully recommend the Baehr units.
I spent a long long long time reading and reading and reading up on pretty much anything I could find about this topic, and eventually settled on getting Challenger Motors to install a Baehr unit for me.
I have to say, it far exeeds any expectations I had for the unit and is quite brilliant. The clarity is amazing, and I can even pick up the pillion whispering to me easily. I didn't think I would enjoy listening to music while riding so was very reserved about this, but it is suprisingly enjoyable. Riding home last night after picking the bike up, with the twilight settling in and the moon up and the music playing felt like a scene from a movie, it was just a really surreal experience to have that sort of clarity in my helmet. The radar detector into my ears is another comfort.
I know there are always a few people out there looking for info on this same thing and I just want to say that yuo do get what you pay for in this world, and there is very rarely a true bargain to be had, so this will cost you probably more than any other solution, but it is quite simply outstanding and you will not regret it.
I don't work for them and this isn't a paid advertisement either, just something that has blown my mind really and I want to highly recommend it to fellow bikers.
Carry on...

They are " the best of the the best".
I know that the bike cops :Police: around the country use the same comms system in their BMW helmets and apparently communications are still crystal clear zooming down the motorway at 160km/hr.

Have looked at the blueant kit but have heard the Baehr unit is the best of the best...
What kind of cost was it to have it installed? Which unit have you got?

Aren't the Baehr units all intertwined with cables or are they now bluetooth??

My mate I think he only charged about $150 for the installation. We've got an UltimaXL, which is just the one with the most inputs. It has Garmin Zumo, Valentine One, and Ipod in it. We run the phone through bluetooth to the zumo, but the actual baehr does have cables. They are routed pretty nicely through out the bike so you can only see two small ones poking out, one between the seat and petrol tank, and one coming up from the grab rails at the back, and you plug your helmet into it.
I read heaps abot the bluetooth units but they always had mixed revies, so at the end of the day i went with cables, and they're actually no problem at all, I can't even tell i have it on.

Will have to remember to unplug before walking away from the bike lol.. So there isn't a cable from helmet to helmet, just all connected to the "black box"....
So how about letting us in on total instalment and purchase cost.... I like the sound of these units but price will be a big decision maker for us...
Cheers

Yep I am waiting to see who does the walk away while plugged in first :)
The cost was quite big, all in all I didnt see change from 3k with all the cables and parts and radar housing/techmounts etc. Depending on how many inputs you need though, there are much cheaper versions of the baehr, just with less functionality and inputs, but I am pretty sure they will all have the excellent quality.
Check out the guys price list it's at http://www.challengermotors.co.nz/. If you can get over the money you'll pay for it, you won't regret it. He's a nice guy too, very easy to deal with and not a typical salesman. I had to convince him I wanted the ULtima version, he wanted to sell me something cheaper, so that's always a good sign in my book.

I thought the whole idea of mudderboiking was to get away from the missus...or if she insists on tagging along and screwing up all your carefully calculated suspension settings and light weight parts purchases then at least there are two layers of fibreglass/polycarbonate/carbon fibre and associated sound deadening foam between you and her incessant bleating...
.....and here you are spending good aftermarket parts money on getting her hooked up again??!!
ARE YOU MAD?????!!!!!!

Nope, let me just clarify, the unit itself is about $1800, so you could get away with doing it a lot cheaper than me if you wanted to route the wires yourself, which after looking at the job he did doesn't seem all that difficult. I just wanted someone experienced to sort it out for me.
Now the rest of the cost was for an addon to the Valentine One, which allows you to take the sound away from the unit to your head, two techmounts for the Zumo and Radar, waterproof casing for the radar, the labour, and the various extra cables that needed to be bought or made (which depend on the devices you want to chuck on). I also got 2 pairs of alpine earplugs from him as well.
So if you are interested in the units check out the price list at the site, it's not necessarily going to cost you as much as me.

has anyone tried the baehr helmets, I am looking for a new helmet and am going to put one of their intercoms on the bike, so maybe a helmet with the speakers/mic already intergrated maybe the way to go rather than retrofitting to my exsisting helmet

Why anyone would want to listen to "recorded" music whilst riding is beyond me. What are yall, girls?
I don't listen to music. I make music. (It's called 2nd gear and a straight-through pipe.) Seriously however, listening to music / phone / other people - where has the spirit of motorcycling gone? If you want conversation whilst travelling.... BUY A CAR!

(end rant)So just out of curiosity, how much long distance (more than 600km in one day) riding do ya do? Big difference between day hoons and long distance touring. It doesn't pay ta ride all day in second gear:stupid:

600 + in one day?
Not often. Maybe once a fortnight? My weekend rides are normally very social affairs with lots of stops, drinking and naps.
I'll only run over 600k if i'm doing the coro loop, the northern run or going to check out some friends in the naki, or further.
Mostly I dodge huge bullets with NISSAN & MAZDA etc... written on them whilst getting to and from work.

Got our Baehr units installed today, man they are awesome, ran us abit more than we wanted to spend, mainly because we put a zumo 550 on the wifes bike, but worth the money.

Like RiderInBlack said most of our riding is all long distance rides when we can get away for a ride it is normally for 3+ days doing large Km's per trip, the ipod helps make the trip more enjoyable.. and I guess unlike some that have posted on intercoms, I quite like talking to my wife ( well most of the time anyway )
