Kaharoa Rd through to SH33?

Just wondering, does anyone know if it is possible to ride from the end of Kaharoa Rd, Kaharoa, Rotorua through to Maungarangi Rd therefore bringing me out onto SH33, just south of Paengaroa?

Rode to the gates on Kaharoa Rd the other evening and they were open. 7.5 km of gravel from the Penny Rd intersection to the gates.

Looking on Google Earth it looks as if the roads do join up.

If I feel so inclined I might give the KTM a run through today and see what happens.

Any rider been through this way? :ride:

Well I did it. From gate to gate is 10km. Kaharoa Rd intersection with Penny Rd to Maungarangi Rd/ S.H33 intersection is 28km.

Aprox 20km metal. Both gates were open. Maungarangi Rd has a one way sign up Kaharoa end but seeing it was Sunday I tootled through.

If you were heading through from SH33 end you would be travelling the right way.

Us country bumpkins don't have GPS. Only just learnt how to follow my nose!

Lat 37* 57'43.23"S
Long 176*18'52.74"E

Very aprox ( not sure exactly ) location of Maungarangi Rd gate.

Lat 37*54'40.29"S
Long 176*20'55.49"E

I used to part-own a place up Maungarangi Rd. That top end is a "paper road" (ie the Council does not itself maintain it but it is a legal road), as far as I am aware, and thus legally open to any member of the public to use.

Thanks for that, it's only 10 km through the bush. A fair bit of logging going on at moment so would make an ideal Sunday run.

We have tried a couple of times to ride through, the last was on Saturday afternoon. Each time the gate at the Rotorua end has been locked with a private road sign telling us we cannot enter, it could be open during the weekdays. We have not tried from the SH33 (Mangarangi road) but will give it a try shortly.
