Or you can give Aunty Helen a token wave of appreciation for the commendable effort she puts into collecting taxes. One finger usually suffices.

the guy sitting in the van CAN type into the lappy your rego as ya go past. That way ya locked in and will get the fine. Most of the time that guy is asleep or not fast enough.
Yes they can get ya at anytime!

There's a fixed government surplus collecting installment near by my place. I've often thought of doing just a bit over and giving the double deuce to the camera, but I've always had the paranoid thought that they'd use such photos as evidence to get bikes to have number plates up front. Or the Ford Commodores around town would be placed on high alert for a black VFR with a primer-erd tail.

If they realise there missing out on alot of revenue they'll do something about it, and were not going to like that something.

You DO realise that if you ARE speeding they can take your photo - and then manually write down your number as you go past them don't you????
And then send you the ticket??

Theres that van on the Hutt motorway, he sometimes sits on the north bound side between kelson and the haywards in the evenings. Its very dark there, you can be quietly minding your own business at 112kmp and "poof".

Not a problem - pop a wheelie the second you get hit by the flash and don't drop it until 100 m further down the road.
They'd have to be seriously quick with their note taking or have a camera in order to grab your number though.

Hey, does anone remember those two on a couple of sportsbikes (one was a blade, thats all i remember) in the south island that were snapped at 120plus sitting on the bars by a front facing camera? Did they ever catch up with them?

There was a recent thread about this issue in the UK (search - links to newspaper articles). This dude used to regularly get photoed from the front giving the finger.
Certainly got the attention of the cops and they hunted him down, starting by phoning all the bikeshops and getting lists of buyers. Pretty serious expenditure, but they got him then threw the book at him.
So yes, if they want to they can get you.

Me an a mate clicked up 10 or 15 photos each with various poses from a fixed camera at Westshore early one morning a few years back.
The best one probally was of him one handed on the back wheel flipping the finger with his spare hand.
Got bored in the end and left.
But I did think later, Shit hope that didn't piss them off enough to come looking.
Maybe a neighbour coulda taken our numbers... that woulda hurt.
But now I think "Best to let sleeping dogs lie".
If ya feel inclined to flip the finger then the revenue collector might feel inclined to track you down or worse still make everyone else pay by forcing us to wear a plate up front.
Now that would really suck!
I have seen a few number plates mounted on a spring loaded hinge plate which is connected to a soliniod.
Push the horn button and ping, the plate filps up.
Look out if Plod susses it though.
I remember a few years ago some Dunedin students got some serious PD for nicking the number plates off a speed camera van (while the dude was still in it) and putting it on their car and then went blasting around town past all the Speed cameras they could find.
I can see the funny side to this, the speed camera van getting heaps of speed camera fines.
But they did it once too often and got busted.
So there might be a clue in there.
If ya wanna go fast check out the track days on this forum.
You'll get to keep ya licence and probally live longer too.
Cheers

As others have said, they sure can.
Reality though. I have never had a ticket in the mail from the front despite having been snapped at least half a dozen times in the last 3 yrs.
Despite what it may look like, I wouldn't set out to tempt fate though, that would be just begging them to focus on it.

They looked seriously at this one recently but it was officially abandoned. None of the bike manufacturers would support it, said it could create instability and cause accidents. Bless them.

I got a ticket from a fixed speed camera that I used to pass every day to work. It was my first scooter and it had the license label on the front of the bike and they must have been able to zoom in. I always slowed down for that camera but one day I must have completely forgot and actually been going faster than normal.
I read on here of a guy in Australia that went past at ridiculous speeds and positions and the police tracked him down. They were able to pin it on him easily as he was clearly visible in the photos and still had the same bike/leathers/helmet.

Some of the fixed ones actually takes you from behind... :buggered:
But the idea of nicking the mobile speed camera license plate is bloody hilarious.
Had a joke back home:
A guy was driving down the road at legal speeds and gets snapped by a speed camera.
Puzzled he turns around and goes by the speed camera once more - at legal speeds - and gets snapped again.
In disbelief he does it a third time and same thing happens.
He then tires of the game and drives home.
Three days later in the mail he receives three fines for not wearing his seatbelt.

Not THAT old granny of an urban myth!!
It happened in London/Brisbane/Christchurch ...you name the city.
Look, the camera does not just print out a ticket with the car owners name/address whatever automatically each time a picture is taken - SOMEBODY had to find out who owns the car so they can post them the ticket.
Surely you don't think they would have somebody blindly posting off tickets to the NZ Govt Speed Camera Company do ya???

Wasn't anything extreme just going fast enough over the limit to set it off.
Havent had any tickets in the post. Although I did forget about the van on the north side of the harbour bridge. Hope the cop was in snooze mode lol!

I hate these vans , by the time you get close enough to see if its a speed camera or not , ironically it is usually too late to slow down. I drive like a nana now when I see a van anywhere, and I flick the finger too, just in case I have mistaken my speed and get a ticket.

And where exactly would you stick it? Over the ram air intakes? or the headlight maybe? Or to the radiator of a naked bike perhaps? I know, stick it to the headers of a cruiser.

If it was a fixed camera they can tell without question who was speeding and who wasn't. The say they can tell even if it is a mobile camera, but generally don't issue a ticket if there is more than one vehicle in the photo.

They get two cops to grab you like they did to me once, or the other time they waited till I was in a building (cycle courier) and were holding my bike when I got out. Got away both times tho! On foot in dress shoes and a suit/uniform in summer v.s a bike courier in the city? No chance.

You wouldn't happen to be talking about Eskdale Rd in Glenfield/Birkdale, would you?
When I was a younger youngster I went to school at Willow Park Primary. Living in a side street just past the chicanes and speed camera on Eskdale Rd, I used to love riding down that hill on my bike after school.
Twice I managed to set the camera off. Dicky little electronic speedo on my mountain bike showed 60kph+. It's a steep hill but I don't think I could pedal that fast these days

Haven't heard too many stories about anyone getting a fine and believe me, there are quite a few cyclists out there who are capable of travelling ~50 km/h on the flat.

Where did you get this info Pancakes?
It is not on the LTSA site that I can find, and I assumed that cycles are governed by the posted limits.
Vainglorious insert: out of the Chilterns on the steep descent on the London-Oxford ride I was clocked at 109kph, mtb with 1.5" specialized slicks.
But that's nothing on the 130.36 km/h record for a bike on a flat without drafting (ie. following a car), 244.9kph (with drafting) or the downhill record (on ice) of 210.3kph official or unofficial record of 364 km/h
But back to the topic - no, however fast you go I doubt a speed camera ticekt will get you on a pedal cycle.

Yeah I used to regularly draft trucks on my push bike. You can go as fast as they can because they can nearly pull you along so you only need to make up the extra. You usually needed a downhill to get you started because the truck doesn't really pull you along til its doing 60kmh. Hardest bit is that you still need to pedal fast enough to match the road speed. I did 115kmh drafting a van on the flat. With 53/11 gearing that was just over 240rpm.
Best downhill speed not drafting was 97kmh on a very steep hill near palmy north.
