what is an expectable time for stop calling landlines

my flatmate has his friends and family calling all hours mostly after 9pm by which time i'm normally in bed "trying" to sleep but as i'm dozing off the phone keeps ringing and waking me up

i as a rule don't call any landline after 9pm but in emergnacies i would but generally i would text the person if i needed them cause i figure if you don't want to be contacted then is easy to mute phone ring or turn it off

am i been to un-reasonable in what i want

As long as everybody pays for their tolls and their share of the line rental, what's the problem with who rings when?

Oh the joys of flatting..... brings back memories.... actually I can't remember back that far. A bit of give and take is in order. Maybe set some agreed flat rules and be reasonable about compromise.

I thought all the self-obsessed y-generation just sat around texting all day anyway? To heck with real conversation!

Run an extension cable to another location and turn the ring volume down???

so you don't mind been woken up by the phone ringing at 1am and the only way to stop it is to answer it even if he isn't home to take the call

there is a word "courtesy"

I agree. Ring here after 9pm without a real good reason and you will learn some new words. The ONLY reason I have a phone in the first place is for the internet. They should be able to have "broadband only" lines where you cant ring in or out and just have the internet and not charge the $50/month for the phone. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, I have never been in a flatting situation but with upcoming teenager in the house he is beginning to get calls from various people around the place. A couple of times they have got a short sharp " Fuck off its too late to be using the phone" and hung up on them.

Well, seems there's a difference compared to Denmark here. Back home 10 pm is where the line is usually drawn... But I have indeed managed to wake some people up now and again down here - didn't realise that it was different, especially seeing as people generally meet at work later than we do in Denmark.

Anyway, if it's important I'll call whenever I want and people will have to HTFU.

why not just unplug the phone by your door when you go to bed?
that way you wont be disturbed and your flat mate will get to hear from his family etc

I used to have the same problem with a flatmate with her mobile ringer set to max volume. That bloody thing never did stfu during the entire year I lived there. :argh: The easiest solution I found was getting ear plugs, they really do cut out a lot of unwanted noises.

Yip, did that at another one of previous my flats where the phone was just outside my door.

Personally I ring people at times I know suits them or we pre-arrange a time to call that suits both ways.

Had a similiar problem. Late night usually isn't a problem around here, but ffs who calls before 11a.m. on a weekend! I turned the ring volume on the phone off. My flatmate doesn't care, if he's even realised. We both keep telling people to ring our mobiles (landline again is only because we have to for internet access) but people being people, they either don't listen or they can't afford a 45 cent phone call on their meagre middle class salaries.

So I guess turn the ring volume down or off when you go to bed, or get a walkabout phone and stuff it under his pillow? Or maybe try a dual handset unit?

They say (whoever the hell 'They' are) that if you mix the letters of words up you can still read them...eg: eleven plus two....mix them up you get..twelve plus one....still readable and the answer is the same, granted, has nothing to do with phonecalls....as ya were...

give the gal a major prize! :first: ............

with one provisio - TELL them you are going to do it and why - they probably don't even know how disturbing it is for you.

Different people keep different hours. Call me at 10:30 am and I'll return your call at 2:30 am.

In a flat, the times that suit you may be unsuitable for others, so you will just have to accept that the phone may ring at times that are inconvenient for you.

Sounds like your flatmates need a lesson in courtesy.

You could organise a dawn ride leaving from your house - be a shame if we all turned up on twins now wouldn't it.

Payback is a bitch. Remember your neighbour - be kind

Slight issues here ... I would not take the phone off the hook .. I expect to be called in emergencies ... e.g. someone hospital etc. People don't call me after 8.30 they know I am in bed and get taught new languages ... I think most people stop calling 8.30 9.30 or 9 pm .... after that is considered rude.

Does depend who I am calling... if know they go to ZZZZzzz at 21:00pm the I'll ring at 21:01  nah

seriously though I'll ring any time for an emergancy but do concider time otherwise... but as i said depends on the people and how well I know them... I have a couple of friends who I could happily ring at midnight, and others not past 9pm...

I just don't get phone calls....

Easier just to text nowadays as it is less immediate. People can reply when they feel like it.

I agree...I'm fairly laid back, but I really dislike having the phone ring after about 8/8.30...mostly because our house is not that big and my son goes to bed at that time I guess...

And also cos I was brought up in a very strict environment, and that was part of the etiquette.

People suck. I hate living with other people. The only way to really avoid any problems is to live on your own. But then you have to pay all your own bills.....

I've removed all the phones, and disconnected the lines from behind the wall sockets.

I bet he's got a mobile. Tell him to use it.

Which means that you have to respect your flatties right to use the facilities that they pay for at any time they wish. I reckon you should just move the phone and turn the ring volume down.

The guys I live with used to be a noisey bunch, music thumping at 1am during the week. I put up with it in order to keep the peace, but one morning I found it a bit too much- walked into the lounge in me tightey-whities and yelled at them all SHUT THE FUCK UP AND TURN THE MUSIC DOWN

Not sure if it was the undies or what I said but if you tell em they'll listen. :niceone:
