Police have arrested 72 people and uncovered two methamphetamine production operations in an 11-day sting.

The sting was run across the three Auckland policing districts from October 23 until today and involved the setting up of 35 checkpoints at various key locations.

Nearly 1,000 infringement offence notices and traffic offence notices were issued.

In all, 36 stolen vehicles were recovered and returned to their owners.

A quantity of property stolen from cars and recovered as a result of search warrants executed has also been returned to owners.

Officer in charge of the operation, Inspector Jim Wilson, said more than 4,000 vehicles were stopped during the course of the operation and hundreds of bail checks were carried out.

Nah, just a leech in a potentially unsafe vehicle sucking off the rest, a ferkin' maggot on society.......

And then there's the holding the hand out for money for nothing side of things..

you shouldnt get tickets for rego. its not a "it expired so im getting these days free" thing, when you update it backdates.

on the otherhand if there were no tickets, lots of people wouldnt pay it at all.

True - and there would be those that would keep driving and then wreck/dump the car without ever paying rego - and then how would you suck the back-dated rego fees out of them??

Ahhh - that would explain the large numbers of cop cars heading back into Whangarei this afternoon... on their way back home after reinforcing the operation...
