View Full Version : Legal question for our coppers

To our current/former coppers, I need some advice.

My daughters mp3 player was stolen by another child. We were pretty certain who took it, but had no proof. A few weeks later the sister of the thief found out about it, and told our daughter it was her little sister. Through the thiefs older sister we got the MP3 player returned. However its rooted, the LCD is smashed, and playback is jittery and all up the shit now.

The thief is aprox 10 years old so no doubt cant be arrested for it, but are her parents legally liable for the damage in any way shape or form? I'm going to try talking to them but if they refuse to cough up do I have any legal recourse?

Not a copper Lias, but I'd doubt you have any legal recourse other than your insurance company on this one.

You would need to be very careful also on how you treat this poor misguided kleptomaniac child as you could scar her for life, creating more demand on my taxes.

Of course, if her parents are Labour Party members, you could get a smack in the teeth too.

Use your insurance buddy.

Been there, you're screwed. My Son's bag with his inhaler was stolen because a little darling liked the look of the bag and was also an asthmatic. Suffice to say that when I challenged the Mother I was told the whanau would be around to sort me out. I said open it and I'll show you his name written inside. She refused. Chicken shit Kindy head teacher KNEW the woman had stolen it and refused to back me up in person, because of the woman's "family situation". I'm sure you can figure that one out.

Bottom line is, if you're honest, middle class, own your own home and car, you're fair game for the "less privileged". So we're out of pocket by one school bag and a Ventolin prescription (they're not free for under-6s - don't get me started). Parents are no longer liable for anything their kids do and can be prosecuted for dishing out even shouty discipline.

Hey man, theres no one speeding so there is no crime. After all you rich white people can afford new mp3s/schoolbags.

But those nasty speeders man, I saw one doing 51 in a 60 zone, SO irresponable.

Yeah i thought I was fucked.. Might be time to tell the whanau to cough up or they'll get the bash.

Hrrm I rang the local copshop, and they said they will actually investigate and it and deal with it through youth justice, to try and and pursuade her from a life of crime.. So I do have some leverage over the parents.
