LTNZ has just launched a new website at www.rightcar.govt.nz (http://www.rightcar.govt.nz). Has the slogan "Every car makes a difference" :) Shows fuel economy, safety, and carbon emission stats for a range of cars.

Ahem,

What is Rightcar?
Rightcar is a website developed by Land Transport New Zealand that provides people with comprehensive searchable information about vehicles available on the New Zealand market. The website provides safety and environmental impact information for each vehicle. A six star rating system is used to evaluate fuel economy, driver safety, the safety of other road users, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and air pollution. The website also supplies information on the effects of car use and driving behaviour.

Sigh. I suppose, at least we get a mention in the FAQ:
The car you drive can also have an effect on what happens to pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and the driver of the other car in a collision.

Be good to do a comparison of motorcycles up against the same criteria though (yes, including safety). But maybe people would conclude that sometimes the right car is a motorcycle!

Useless bloody website doesn't even have my car on it. C'mon, they're like every second bloody lease car!

It would be interesting to see crash safety ratings for motorcycles.

Yet another lesson to think before I type :)

I suppose I meant ¨a fair representation of the relative safety/danger of motorcycles¨...

Some useless info from me:

My Volty gets the same mileage as my friend's Prius! I have to say I was surprised when we compared fuel consumption. Both vehicles cost 6 to 8 cents per kilometre. I woulda thought my little itty bitty Volty would have been streets ahead of his stupid over-priced car. :angry2:

But one of the reasons I started using a motorbike to commute was because of the fuel economy, so LTNZ really should include us on their site.

Hi Klingon

According to the rightcar site, the Prius is 4.4l/100km, which lines up with your ~7c/km cost above. My GN used to do about 3.3 l/100km, though, and I thought it was pretty much the same engine as the Volty. Wonder what accounts for the difference? Still better than a stonking great SUV, though! :2thumbsup:

Hybrid cars are great - they use so little petrol.

Question is: How much damage is done to the environment by manufacturing the special batteries? And what happens when you dispose of them?

Is the total harm to the environment greater over the life cycle of the vehicle if it's a hybrid or a motorcycle? Which is worse?

Remember to factor in manufacture, disposal and maintenance.

From memory a Prius has to do something like 150,000 miles before it even passes the environmental impact of a regular car let alone a motorbike.

From what I hear, the last thing we want is the fuel economy stats for a modern 1000 sportsbike put up for all to see. We won't even mention the tyres
