Hello,

As usual, I warmed up my bike this morning, just leaving home for uni. Bike started first pop, just like any other day. After about 5 min, I was ready to leave, so I came out the house and revved it a bit to see if it was warm enough, and the bike just cut out. I thought it wasn't warm enough, so I just turned the key to 'off' and then back to 'on'. Upon doing this, I got nothing. No headlight, no tail light, no dash light. Nothing.

I took off the fairings, checked the fuses, all seemed well. I pulled out the headlight fuse, and it came out broken. Now I'm not sure if it was actually blown, or if it broke as I was pulling it out. Either way, fuse was fucked and I replaced it with a proper working one. I turned the key - still nothing. So I decided to check the main 30A fuse. Took more fairing off :angry2: and got to the fuse - pulled it out and it seems sweet as.

My alarm still sort of works - I can arm and disarm it, and when I do so the indicators flash like they should, and it beeps like it should. However, the LED that is supposed to flash when it's armed doesn't flash, and the alarm won't go off, even if I whack the bike right where the control unit with the shock sensor is mounted.

After doing all the above bike still won't start - in fact I get nothing, no lights at all.

Anyone? I need this fixed asap, as this bike is my only means of transport. Will pay generously with alcoholic beverage of your choice. I'm located in Three Kings near the Mount Roskill Grammar School. PM me or Text / Call on 0211224419 if you can

Thanks in Advance :first:

Alarm, you say? Sounds like there's a good place to start. Check the wires into/out of that.

What exactly is it that I'm supposed to be doing here? My multimeter is at my friend's house and he's not answering his phone :brick::brick:

KISS it dude--alarms one possibility--another is that one wire to the battery has come loose -no power makes me suspect broke/loose battery terminal

Yep seconded.....the 400's seem to be prone to it too

I have just checked the battery terminals, and they are sweet as. I fiddled with the alarm connections and now that's working properly, but still no joy on anything else - turning key does nothing.

I'm starting to think it's a problem with the ignition barrel or something that it connects to.

Unfortunately I know nothing of electrics :(

Edit: There's no KISS on this model, its a 1989 :p

Edit2: I've got my mate to bring my multimeter back, will know about the ignition barrel shortly.

Make sure you hook the negative lead of the multimeter onto the frame, not the battery terminal, then start working your way from the positive terminal towards the ignition with the other lead.
Just be methodical and you should find the problem, at least it's not intermittent, then you'd really be tearing your hair out.

Doesnt have a breaker does it? Guy who bought my 88 GSXR had it not go one day when we went to ride, all the fuses checked out fine, and i believe the lights went, turned out there was a circuit breaker somewhere near the batt, after he reset it started fine

Problem fixed - Fucken god damn vampire clips

Another problem - when we took the tank off, the fuel hose ruptured and started pissing fuel all over the place :third: however we just managed to fix it right back up by using sections of the hose that weren't damaged.

What a day

Ok those vampire clips were a pain when you were installing it initially. But glad you got it sorted. Hey bro go buy a hose from the shop they are cheap. Cos chances are the hose is gonna rapture again...

Yeah, hose needs replacing for sure - it's still leaking so I have to leave tap in 'off' position. Just glad it's rideable at the moment so I don't have to rely on others for a ride to get replacement parts.

Got a mate coming later today in order to sort me out with proper connectors so its all secure.

I just had Ben (U1AGO) come down and pretty much re-wire the front end of my bike (He's an auto sparky. We got rid of the alarm, and the vampire clips / bullets and replaced them with proper spade connectors.

Now to get that hose, and bike will be back in service! There is a garage just around the corner from my house. I hope they have the fuel hose that I need, or I'm gonna be shit out of luck

Yeah? Are fuel hoses reasonably standard parts? Have you got any spare lying around? If so can you meet me at uni :first: and help a brother out?
