View Full Version : Boy racers and anger on the streets

What did I do wrong?
Picture this - 5.30 daytime traffic on way home stopped and idling on my bike at a red light Dunedin one way system.
Boy racer type car with three guys in right lane beside me - rev rev rev.
Light changes and I take of as normal, quick but smooth - low revs and no drama.
Get up to 50k and there is a screaming exhaust, hisssing/clacking wastegate and the boy racer rips past at about 70k which is stupid as the next light is already orange.
Stop at the red and take off the same again, boy racer rev rev scream hiss/clack gets left behind, as he passes me again as I am at the speed limit they all give me the finger. I realise I have been drag racing and didn't even know it at the time!!! I nearly wet myself laughing at this coz a man nearing 50 riding home from work is a funny boy racer, until I see the look on their faces. They were really mad, I mean you could see real anger, hatred and aggro in their faces!!! I have never done anything to anybody that would get that sort of reaction before and here I did it without even trying. They drove alongside me trying to scare me for the next two lights swearing at me and giving me the old finger, they probably felt I had humiliated them.
My bike is not a flashy sports bike. OK it does have race numbers on it - but that’s coz I race on tracks not the road.
Boy racers do usually make me laugh - all flash, noise and show they are really quite funny - all noise but not enough trousers to go real racing. No coz they don't have the skills or balls for the track but I don't think they are so funny anymore! I was ready to take evasive action coz these guys actually alarmed me.

Ive experienced the revving - not the abuse though.
Looks like you got a bad draw, usually for me after trying to drag me and finding I'm not interested they give up and go off somewhere else.
Did you get their plate? *555 or something ?

I have seen this type of reaction a few times myself. The boy racers seem to get upset that their expensively modified cars with loud exhausts and 120db stereo systems can't drag off an adventure bike (not even a sports bike), when the rider isn't even trying to race.
One instance I had near Alexandra: A boy racer Subaru was doing 80 in a 100 zone, so I pulled out to pass him. As I got to level with the driver's window he floored it with all resulting revs and noise. As I had already started to overtake and was on the wrong side of the road I just opened the throttle a tad, without changing down, and continued my overtaking manouver. However, as soon as I reached town and slowed down to 50, the boy racer screamed past doing around 160 into the 50 area and gave me the fingers as he passed. Obviously upset at his car's lack of performance. :bleh:

Indeed, it's sad that they allow these people to get a drivers license at all. What we need is that compulsory 3rd party insurance I believe. Then they'll have to suck it up driving a 1.3 Toyota corolla from the late 80s.
It's weird where all the anger and frustration comes from though. I mean, as long as there has been cars and bikes there have been young men fascinated by them. And while they probably always have been doing stupid stuff around them I don't think the anger issue is that old.
At least it's harder for such people to get a handgun here than it would be in the states.

Seen a few cases like this.
Had one guy go to yell at us out the window (we were walking pissed a crack home), just as he stuck his head out the window to call us a fuckn...... his mate must have stuck 2 up his poo shooter. All we got was
"FAAaaarrrKKKK!!!!" :eek::pinch:

Being passed on the road is a sure sgn of inferiority isn't it - well... in the absence of anything meaningful.
yeah it's good for a laugh, the RF's the same - a slow enough bike alongside the R1s and GSXRs of this world but when a kid in his pride and joy (323 Station wagon, lowered and magged) wanted to have a go... it was touching...

I'm with you on the insurance thing but this would also involve the cops/courts enforcing a decent punishment if they don't have insurance/valid license etc.
There are guys where I'm currently working driving raced up Jap motors every day on a learners license which they had for 10+ years, without ever having a qualified driver sit beside them (I'm presuming that's the law?). They've told me they don't give a f*ck 'cause when they've been stopped by the cops in the past nothing has happened.

I have seen this plenty of times on my old car (never the bike - but then I have been riding a GN250 ).
They are all bravdo - *555 their asses and tell the cops that they were racing. Generally the police will find something to green or pink sticker them with just to make life that little bit harder for the little shits.

I remember the time when something similar happened to me, stupid cager in a 4x4 thought when I was giving my bike a few revs and thought I was dragging him off. I just did my usual start and got to the 70kph and then I noticed the twit was gunning all hard out next to me!
I just slacked off the throttle and left him to his own dream land, bet he must have thought "I showed that biker!"
And then I pootled past him as he slammed his brakes on to stop rearending a car at the next set of lights and lane split to the front.... At a sedate 10kph.
I guess no accounting for the egos and idiotic brainfart that passes for thinking in their cranial regions. Good to hear that nothing untowards happened!

Well there is no accounting for some of these idiots and their thought patterns, I just let them go. Its always fun to cruise past them at the lights after they have ducked and dived from lane to lane.

'Tis always good for a laugh though, pootling away from the lights while you hear the BRAAAAAAAAA of a Subaru with an external wastegate going balls-to-the-wall somewhere behind you

i think in Aussie when you pay your rego you get 3rd party included in the price, i could be wrong tho, i think its the way to go here, then again we already pay enough in rego but then how else can you make people get insurance?

Fully agree with the 3rd party or why don't they put cc restrictions on cars like with bikes?
I own a couple of show cars and have noticed it happens the other way too though, I get bikes pulling up next to me and revving with the odd nodd lol. I always get pissed off for not being on my bike! lmao
I'm sick of paying the earth for all my insurances on high performance vehicles, bloody thanks to the wee 'boy/girl racers' giving us enthusiasts a bad name :S

I rev my motor sometimes because it sounds cool :P

Anyway, how would 3rd party insurance help other then making it more likely the person they crash into will get a few cents towards the damage to their car. I reckon hit the problem at the source and change the culture that breeds the behaviour we are discussing here.
Fuck.. just added my dodgey spelling of behaviour to my Firefox dictionary on accident.

Yep. My thoughts as well - give them a restricted licence too - max 1200cc 80hp for first two years! It worked for bikes (sort of), so why shouldn't it work for cars too - particularly given the current easy availability of high performance cars for low prices.

To the 250 owners and Badgirl who want 3rd party insurance. As I posted before I paid over a grand for 3rd party f & t in the UK. The NZ market is not big enough for the govt to back a scheme like Oz. I suspect they will just hand over the running of it to private insurers and bikers under 25 yo will end up getting screwed.
As for young people driving/riding anything modified or expensive, forget it. I know riders who were stupid in the past (DIC, careless use etc.) who have to wait till they hit 40 to get their dream bike since it takes years to get their premiums down. Over there it is: no insurance = no ride.
There are already enough laws to deal with boy racers. They just need to be enforced and fines need to be recovered.

Yes I race it a lot. Did the Hill Climb and Quarter mile sprints two weeks ago, did the "Have a go day" at Levels last Saturday. Done quite a few Motard races at the Silverstream Kart track this year and some Gravel sprints and a Mini TT too. Racing again at the Kart track again this weekend and then it down to Ingll for Burt Munroe Teretonga and the Wyndham street race. I also ride it to work everyday - you could say I am getting my moneys worth out of it and it does quite well sometimes too.
Some stuff about it in the DR650 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=50896&page=3) thread on the Adventure Bike Forum.
PS. I am looking forward to the BM weekend coz I am soooo ooolllld I have a real Burt Munroe story from when I raced at Oreti Beach and Teretonga in the late 70's.

To the 250 owners and Badgirl who want 3rd party insurance Nah I think the cc restriction would be a better idea. Although... it could work the same way because damned if they could find an insurance company just willing to do 3rd party on alot of the boyracer higher performance cars, you have to pay the earth for full cover which will screw them :)

i had this boyraced toyota (pic below) corolla for an art-performance I was doing - new to me I got pulled over at random by cops. other boy-racers would pull up along side me on the m-way, hover at 100 till i looked over, then gap it ... i found it wierd at first. i was always going to loose the race in my non-turbo p.u.j.
on the ducati I have had two different holden utes ride my asse on m-ways till i gapped it, with one of them -he was suddenly they on my asse again, i gently weaved the whole southern city-bound, then forget about it and cruised the north-western to te atatu off ramp-WHERE holden shoots out of the fast lane and revs it round the front. a most ugly peice of driving.
i still think "racing" on normal roads is dumb and dumber :bleh: holden drivers in particular are bafoons :bleh: (no offence to any biker who owns a holden :), that's different)

I get the same shit when out in the F100 (hot rod) - they cruise alongside taking pxt with their phone, giving thumbs-up (or modern equivalent) and then sit along beside me in the next lane for ages (and preventing me from changing lanes at times before mrrrrrrm-pisssh-mrrrrrom-pisssh, they're gone, sometimes doing the swerve in front thing too.

Insurance is compulsory there. There are some who don't have insurance. If they get caught they get a ban. If they get caught driving whilst banned they get in a lot of trouble - take my word for it - I have a couple of mates who this applies to.
My last UK bike insurance premium for a 950 was 175 quid, fully comp. My last UK car premium was just under 500 quid for a 993 Turbo 4, fully comp.
When I was 17 I simply couldn't afford to insure a raced up Impreza unless Daddie was loaded.
However, if you have a heavily endorsed license, or you've had a ban in the past, or you crash all the time then your premiums are f*cking high. Good or bad thing?
Now, there's plenty wrong in the UK but I was talking about NZ. I just think there's much that the powers that be here could do to improve road safety.

Well its cheap and accessable here and people dont take it because they would rather spend it on getting some 20" chrome spinners with flashing LEDs on hire purchase.:tugger:
Its not too expensive in the UK if you have a good record and drive a sensible car.
I had a Renault family car and insurance was very reasonable. I had 2 "group 20" cars (brand new Subaru STI tuned by ProDrive and a Porsche 911) and insurance for them was not cheap but not too bad as I had a clean record and lived in a low crime area.

Eggs work well! Ever tried to clean one off a windscreen? Wipers won't do it - not easily at least... ...and if they can't see to drive - they can't chase ya! :Punk:
Sometimes (if vehicle is oncoming) they WILL take out the windscreen too.:shit:

I've found the secret to piss these guys off big time. Next time one of these dicks cruise on up in the other lane looking for some action. Make out you want to take them on. Blip the throttle just to let them know you're interested, then when the lights change to green sit there. They take off with a roar and a hiss and when you catch up to them at the next set of lights flip up ya visor and all ya gotta say is one word......................"SUCKER." :devil2: There is nothing that pisses these guys off more than racing on their own. Works a treat and with luck there may be a bonus like a cop sitting somewhere. :niceone:
