at the lights today with the ol XR 'thou on
i noticed when i breathe out, and for is left, it always groups around where the lights from my surroundings are on the helmet!
so of a car is dead ahead of me, i get two rings of fog around the lights!
why is this?

Shoei makes a pin lock visor with an anti fog insert for that helmet. Its GOOD! consider getting urself one.

Yup, mate of mine uses the pinlock and breath guard for this very helmet (and it's awesome btw, I got one myself) - and he says he never has any trouble. And mind you, this is in Denmark where it's damp and cold all year round... Did I mention that the sun never shines as well?

As for the light - I guess it's because you need light to diffuse in the fog in order to see it's there. Would be my guess anyway, too tired to make an argument for it though.

Go get the pinlock system. I got mine from Motomail. Roughly $140. 100 for new visor with pins and 40 for insert. Can't fault mine at all. I've got the pinlock on both clear and smoke visors and worth every cent. Even on the wettest and humid day no fogging what so ever.

The pinlock visors are worth the money, fogging is a thing of the past.

I posed a similar question when I first got my XR1000. All I do is ride with it open a crack (using that lever on the left) around town, and if it fogs up when sitting at lights, I flick it open a couple of notches. When the weather's colder, I polish the inside of it was with anti-mist stuff. Anything will do, from dishwashing liquid, "Cat Crap", glycerine (but not nitroglycerine), or whatever. These things are all surfactants that help prevent condensation.
I also wear a thin silk balaclava in winter which helps.

I *could* get a Pinlock thingie, but this works well enough as it is, and I'm picky about anything that gives less than optically-correct vision.

Another option (if you can't get the 'pinlock' visors - ie non-Shoei, or model not supported like my Raid), is a 'FogCity' insert. Similar to the 'pinlock', but is a glue in/stick on system. Basically creates a 'double glazing' effect, which works really well (I've used them for the past 11+ years).
Main thing, is you need a nice new CLEAN visor to fit it to (costs around $90-$100 per FogCity), otherwise you're likely to end up with a smudge right where you can't get at it to clean it. :(

The other thing to remember, is to leave it down when stopped and it's raining! This keeps the visor sealed (hopefully), and prevents rain running down the inside of the visor... ...AND it won't fog when you're stopped!

Yeah.. thats what I do to.. no need to buy extra fancy pants pinlock thingys when I spent good money on a helmet that has its own antifog built in... the funky little lever thingy on the left of the helmet - its all you need.

Nice use of Ingrish :niceone:

Just to add to what's already been said, I bought a breath guard for my XR1000 for $40 and that's made more than enough difference for me. Can quite happily ride around town with the visor closed.

Yeah that works quite well... however, every now and again you'll get some dust or other particles in your eye if you got that small gap open. And that is not so nice :(

Just picked up breathguard, chin curtain and pinlock visor for my XR1000. Fuck me this stuff works like a charm. I can breathe heavily with my visor down standing still and no hint of fog going on!
I still have to try it on a cold day and in the rain, but it seems awesome so far.

Due to a mix-up I got my pinlock as a tinted visor - and will need a clear one for the shitty days. But still... I have to say that the tint on this visor is just right. It really does a lot to relax your eyes.

Pinlock visors, cant beat them. We have just invested in some recently, and they are great, worth the money. Take a little extra care, but doesnt all our good stuff? Nothing more dangerous than not being able to see properly on a bike, in bad weather

fog city eventually lets some dirt in, and then its game over. Where as the pin lock use silicon seal which has hold up well over time. I wear glasses behind the pin lock as well, don't notice any optical problem.

I have used shoei for years. And doing the 'little thingy' on the left works well for me. Also keep the visor clean! most people forget this part.

The X spirit Shoei (next one up from XR1000) comes std with chin skirt etc. I find the vents are enough to clear visor on those early morning rides. A great hat and so well developed over earlier models. gaz.

I have a Shoei Raid II. I am planning on getting a pinlock clear visor, and a pinlock dark-tinted visor. Then I was hoping it was possible to buy one clear pinlock insert to swap between the two visors. Is this doable, or is the pinlock system more of a put the insert in, and then you shouldn't really remove it again?

Good choice mate. I haven't tried removing my pinlock insert. It's a silicone bead that seals it so I guess it would be alright.
That being said, I'd personally go for an insert for each visor. You could damage the bead if you move it around too much.

I read something about giving some dirty old shampoo a go, and bugger me it hasn't fogged since, and that was at the start of October. I can sit at the lights in the rain breathing normally and zero fog. It's starting to wear off now but a quick reapply won't take long.

I just smeared it all over, got really messy and left a cloudy film. I waited for that to dry a bit then polished it off with a soft cloth. Works a treat.
