View Full Version : Throwing the question open to the unwashed masses - what do I buy?

Right, not to put too fine a point on it, gixxers hurt my legs after 3 hours or so. Too many years of squatting and deadlifting and then cycling. I am very inflexible.
It's gotten to the point where I can't be arsed doing day trips up and down the countryside, even when I have very good reason to do them, because I know I'll be in a foul mood afterwards.
I still end up going, but, you know. The joy just isn't there.
A quick spin on Finn's Brutale the other day confirmed my suspicions about what sort of bike would make me happy.
I can't afford a Brutale, so what should I buy?
Hypothetical for the moment. Let's say the budget's about $10K. Give me some ideas. I just want something that goes fast, handles well and doesn't hurt. Not a tubby tourer, though.
Speed Triple?
Bandit?
Fazer?

Ok, more seriously...I reckon the Speed Triple would suit you to a T. 007XY had one when we met, and he still regrets selling it. Besides, the 1050 can become in no time and with a little bling a really gorgeous Street Fighter taht's really horny to look at...

With that Suzuki Summerfest thing going on, you could get a new GSX750 Katana for about $10000. Then, if you ask nicely, they'll throw in a Tech/Ram mount for holding a book! Trust me, going from the GSXR to the Katana, you'll need the book! What does it profit a man to gain all that comfort, but to lose his SOUL?

Yes their kinda ugly, but, you've got speed and comfort (oh boy have you got speed, and yes they are surposed to do over 150k in first out of the box). I wound mine out to 11,500 rev (gently) in 2nd the other day and was definately doing warp speed (in controlled conditions of course). Yet I can happily pootle along in 6th gear at 100km all day. Had the Aprilia (sore shoulders and slightly cramped legs but not too bad), TL1000, SV1000. Never thought I would own one of these, absolutely love it. Beautifully balanced bike like you wouldnt believe, great fuel distance (I can get from Tauranga to Warkworth without stopping). Take out the secondary butterflies, drop on tooth off the front sprocket (cause dont need to go over 300k + at the top end anyways but it still will, Im told), power commander to remap and then dyno to set for more lineal power (oh yea yeha) and you have a mean as bike, believe me ;)

Well first you have to decide
Do you wanna go naked?
Or keep with fairing?
That cut your choices down a touch,
Next after that you have to decided, do you want vtwin/4 cylinder.
That will go in some type of fashion cut down your choices.
There are tons of great bikes in any of those ranges you choose, from zzr1200s, blackbirds, to xjrs, x11s, buells, etc
Need to narrow down your search opinion a bit, or just go be a bike slut and test ride as much as you can. to see what suits you.
But like anything first and formost the bike has to turn you on, other wise ya not gonna want to ride it as much.

Jrandom I was in a similiar predicament to you actually and ended up now with a ZX10 , great track bike and sports thrill and a adventure bike KLR650 which was $9000 new.
Now I know that might be against the grain but think of this, you can relax and be super comfy at 120 - 130 kmh all day AND you can go for rides to places you didnt know exsisted, so it will add a whole new adventure dimension to your riding.
So keep the GSXR 1000 and have a KLR as well (or similair)
Food for thought maybe ??

I have, actually, considered this. A 650 with 50/50 type tyres, and I'd probably keep a gixxer and just leave it in its race fairings.
And, hmm, SRAD 750 with full Ohlins and a newly rebuilt head, or a thrashed stock K2 thou? That's the other decision I need to make within the next few weeks (I'm leaning toward the SRAD).
It would be nice to be able to head off into the gravel.
Question for you - you know the steep track on DOC land that goes up the big hill near Port Jackson? There's a stream to cross in the farmland just before you hit the track, etc. I went up it on foot carrying my MTB during the Colville Connection race in '05, I remember it well. Would one of the 650 singles handle something like that with the right tyres on, or would it not really be doable without a full-on MX bike?

I was up at Port Jackson about three weeks ago, I didnt cross a stream in a farm as such but there are a number of fords which I went around so as to go through the stream or river (much more challenging) I crossed them piece of piss.
At the end of the road there is a DOC camping area, with a road that leads up to the farm house, there is a small bridge, I avoided the bridge and went through the river 3 or 4 times , no prob.
My KLR gets through alot of shit before its a problem, thats on the standard tyres also, additionally (kwaka plug coming up) I did 400 kms on one tank of gas that day before refuelling, hows that (22 litre tank) and I was comfy as hell the whole way.
I love it, Im about to try and configure it so I can carry my fly rod etc and have a KLR fishing bike !!

the speedtriple has been a common theme, but where do you get one for $10k? (unless it an old thrashed 955).
Im interested in the outcome - looking for something (in similar price range) a bit more exciting than the (zzz)GSXF, without more weight (210kg), and without a crippling riding position.
btw, have you tried a Daytona 955i Dan? If yes, what's the riding position like?

It's not the windblast that bothers me; I'm not a small fulla, I can hold on just fine. I like sitting up in the wind. The sole problem, the one and only problem, is my legs. I need to not have them folded up too far underneath me.

Aprilia's answer to the VFR, eh.
Pegs look too high. I'll try one, but I don't think it'll be the ticket. Also, they just don't turn me on. One way or another, any bike I own and ride has to turn me on. That is not negotiable. In fact, I'd rather put up with the discomfort of a gixxer than have a bike that didn't hurt to ride, but that I didn't get excited about, or even worse, actively disliked the look of.
For instance, a certain floppy-haired KBer was cheeky enough to suggest to me this morning that I buy a Multistrada. We are now no longer on speaking terms.

Mmm, true true. I was thinking of it in terms of being Aprilia's slightly softer-focus all-round offering alongside the 'pure sprotsbike' RSVs. Which, I might add, have never really grabbed me. Dunno why not. I just sort of go "hmm, nice bike" but don't feel the desire. Bit like seeing a hot Asian chick - you appreciate it on a certain level, and you know that some guys are all about it, but it's just not your thing.
Blondes and GSXRs ftw. ;)

It's all about the peg position, dude. Just the distance from seat to pegs, nothing more. It seems to be a little unusual, too; most guys that don't like sprotsbike ergos seem to run into issues with wrists and shoulders, etc.
I've never had a single twinge in my upper body from riding any bike; it's just that I have particularly inflexible legs from several years of over-focused training without proper stretching, followed by being a lazy-arse pie eater for the last two or three. Not to mention a handful of knee injuries from bins that slowly add up over time.
I must have a certain minimum distance between seat and pegs to be able to cover the miles without agony.
jrandom
9th November 2007, 12:23
question have you tried a newer model gixxer, they are meant to be alot more comfortable?
I'll try one, but I don't think the seat-to-peg distance has increased. If the ergos have changed they've probably just moved more in ZXR directions, ie, less of a stretch to the bars. As stated above, that isn't my problem.

how much more distance you reckon you need? one of my mates made up some plates to move his pegs down 30mm on his gixxer when he had knee surgery, was piss easy and only took about 1 hour.

Not sure to be honest, and yes that could definitely be an option, ideally with the ability to quickly swap them back to stock position for the track.
I shall investigate that too. :)

Bandit?
Fazer?
(gulp)... Hornet?
Hornet for sure. Honda reliability, cheaper than a Speed Triple, and not a Fazer..

absolutely right, but a cheap Ohlins is $1200 and a fork rebuild with appropriate rate springs say another $1200. Given a secondhand Hornet is $8k or so, there's your ten large.
or you could buy mine with Ohlins fork springs (standard otherwise) and Ohlins shock fitted. If you are heavier than about 75-80kg you would need different spring rates though.

Stock hornet rear shocks are a bit hmmm i'm led to believe, the cb1300 runs twin shocks & doesn't suffer from the same problem.

What are you comparing the Brutale's riding position too?
The SRAD is renowned for it's uncompromising riding position but those K2 thou's are pretty comfortable, certainly more so than the Brutale you rode. This is from one Brutale road test: "Furthermore, the high-and-tight pegs would turn knee replacement surgery into a semi-annual event, while the harsh and choppy suspension would earn your chiropractor a new Rolex every week." I don't recall that sort of sentiment from any recent Japanese sports bike test.
I had a 916 a while back, and those early 916-998 dukes are about as bad as it gets. My partner had a K1 GSXR1000 that felt like a Lazy-boy lounge chair after climbing off the 916.

I boggle at the suggestion that a GSX-R1000 K2 is more comfortable than a Brutale.
Your comments make no sense. Are you, perhaps, confusing the Brutale and the F4?
Given that I started this thread more or less immediately after hopping off the bikes I've mentioned, don't you think that it's a bit dubious to quote some magazine test back at me? I rode the fucking thing, dude.
And, yes, of course. I'm sure there are bikes that are less comfortable than the K2. So what?

So Mr Jrandom, have you got a list of preferences for us thus far? I do strongly suggest (given your original spec and my bias) regardless of budget at this stage (small detail we will give you lessons) you include the ZX14. At least (humour me) give one a test ride, you will be highly impressed with the weight distribution and the balance of the bike, which is the great thing about them, but still a sports bike ride

Look there's such a thing as creative accounting, believe me, I know  and like I said, just give us a preference list not withstanding budget at this stage, but focus on type of bike, always worry about the bucks last I say, people will always find a way to stretch a bit (I encourage it, can you tell?)

I've spent the last few months HTFUing on regular occasions for 800km days on the gixxers, and I'm over it. I want my riding to be 100% enjoyable, instead of having it be something that requires 'HTFU'.
And a list of bike preferences?
I'm just going to take it one bike at a time. I'll test ride a CB1300 this week.
Then I think I'll try an FZ1, a Hornet 900 and a Speed Triple back to back.
I'll wangle a decent thrash on each of the above along the usual Coatesville-Riverhead, Old North Rd test track, and report.
Hitcher

Prediction: Out of that lot you'll prefer the FZ1 -- that's one model Mr Yamaha got really right. Try the old model Kawasaki Z1000 too if you can find one, although you will probably have to upgrade the seat for longer distances.

$10k budget
$11k = brand spanking new Hornet 900 (919), 2 year warranty, and your legs will be fine! Plus its a Honda so it will go forever......
There's a few year old ones at dealers etc cheaper will the balance of the warranty leaving $ for bling....
CB1300 - $13500 weighs 30 odd kg more than the Hornet & very average fuel economy, solid tourer though.
SV1000S - $12500 & your legs will hate you..... plus the TL looked better......
Speed tripple - not a chance at 10k
Might get a jap import Ducati but the SV would be a better buy as a V-twin.
Me - I'd get the HORNET - funny that!

13th November 2007, 22:42
Only get the Hornet if you're going to put money into the susspension. Theres a $0 exhaust mod that will make it sound better than any commercial can that I've heard on a Hornet.
Great motor though, and with the right bars you'll do 230km non-stop stretches easy.

I heard a lot of chatter about the Hornet suspension before purchasing - honestly I find it AOK for street riding and its a hoot around the hills, heaps better than the 1200ss I had previously. Mind you I'm only 73kg. The 05 on models come with adjustable damping front and rear (previous ones preload only) and this improved a lot of the complaints. SV's are the same, CB1300's XJR's all budget related suspenders, you don't get top units for the prices these bikes retail at. Cheapest Hornets, SV's and 1300 on the planet - check out what Aussie and England pay!
I'd be keen to ride a Olins kitted one just to see if it was worth the $2k plus difference for road riding.

How does it go? "The best suspension is the best you've ever ridden"?
When I had the VTR1000, despite its suspension being much maligned, I actually found it pretty good - heaps better than anything else I'd ridden.

Well, you know, I could see myself on a cruiser. All that rolls on two wheels is good as far as I'm concerned. The problem is that cruisers fuck my back almost as bad as sportbikes fuck my legs. Neither riding position is 'natural'.
