Posts in Rant or Rave & Jokes and Humour no longer add to your post count. This will also affect your rep power and how quickly new members become a Senior Member.

It's made a big change to the top posters list (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/memberlist.php?&order=DESC&sort=posts&pp=30) :D

Funny thing is that I kept my rep points for the posts I lost so all a bit odd really...........

I could understand PD posts etc being deducted but am in 2 minds about rant and rave etc as it is part of the Forum and is part of the fun...........is there a specific reason like computer space...........

It is only points but normally changes are effective from a specific date rather than counted back....even the Govt don't do that.......ah well

Joni

Funny thing is that I kept my rep points for the posts I lost so all a bit odd really...........It does not affect the rep you got for the posts.

It affects your "rep power" in other words what your rep is worth when you give it out. Rep power is based on how much rep you have, how many posts you have etc etc....

So your reputation points wont drop, just your reputation that you give out.

A valid point. But where do you draw the line?

If it discourages non-bikers from signing up simply to talk crap, and tell us all how depressed they are, it must be a step in the right direction...

Really, dont be surprised if you get your posts moved to the PD post thread if they are anything like the above. Interesting. But a fair enough point to make.

I suppose you could still show the other posts... something like Bike Posts: 500. Other Posts: 250. I don't know... there've been some pretty valid, interesting discussions that have been posted there on account of being non bike related... but IMO KB isn't just about bikes. These threads were no less valid to the people who posted them.

You can still rant and rave! It is something that I am trying to perfect actually!........Rant and rave away, it just wont add to your post count. This is primarily a biker site, for bikers to talk bike/riding related shit. It is also a forum for some serious discussion on all things motorbike related. No one is stopping us from ranting and raving love, it has just taken a well deserved back seat, think of a bit like Trevor Mallard.......R&R has taken a lesser role in the grand scheme of things.

From what I have read in this thread, it seems quite a few people have just been posting to get their post count up.... to me, that alone shows that this decision was the right one, surely its about what you contribute to KB?

Anyway.... quality not quantity is something a few on here dont seem to get.

I personally don't see what the problem is...I post for the awesome conversations I have on line with people I really like.

Some people may consider that drivel, and fair enough too, but I enjoy it. Now wether that goes into the post count or not, I don't give a hoot, I'll still have the same banter!

But it has highlighted to me that I need to make a bit more of an effort to look at more directly bike related threads and contribute somehow.

I got to admit that generally in these threads, I will do more reading than posting, as I am a self confessed ignoramus when it comes to mechanics, and am not stupid enough to post on something I know nothing about!

I also don't know much about bikes, so I also do a lot more reading than posting. This change doesn't tell me that I should post more often in bike-related posts. I will still continue to read and learn. But it does mean that my post count more accurately reflects my lack of knowledge about bikes. I'm fine with that.

I think you have a valid point here V.

Some of us stumble upon this place in a search for information and experience as we try to get into the whole biking scene. Being a complete newbie to everything bike related I guess I don't have much knowledge about bikes to share - so does that mean I should just remain a lurker or is it still ok to post a few questions and throw in my 2 cents worth? With time I have experiences that may be valuable for other members, I'll stumble upon and post questions that have merit and eventually I might be able to help someone else solve a problem. At least that's what I would hope for.

IMHO an internet forum is valuable mainly because it's a handy way to share information and knowledge between users with very different backgrounds and experience.

If it's a friendly place with a good social side to it (and KB seems to be mostly like that) then that's an added bonus. However, my only concern would be that if anyone is indeed just posting to up their postcount then you'll just muddy the serious threads (i.e. on-topic) with more spam. Sure enough this can be moderated - but it's still work for the mods.
In the end - post counts :whocares:

Yes, I agree...what i meant by my conclusion, is that I saw that I came down from 2000 (just over by 6 too...:crybaby:) to just over 600. So I guess I realised I wasn't really posting much in the "serious" threads...:p

And I'm okay too about not knowing much on bike engineering...

Post count may have become (to some) part of their online identity, hence the insecurity that arose from loosing said post counts...:sherlock:

Can't see the point to be honest, internet forum post counts either tell you that the person has nothing better to do or they have been on the forum longer than you. To me it doesn't mean more experience as you'd be dumb to believe half whats written on forums anyway unless they can back it up.

You know what's cool?

"1000th post" threads will now become impossible. Because, you see, they will be off topic in anything but 'Rant or Rave', and posts there don't count toward your total!

One's 1000th (or whatever) post will always have to be bike-related, and that is the way it should be.

Of course, you can then go post something in RoR and pat yourself on the back, but that post itself will not be your "1000th".

and now.. I'm on 97...

About time, too.

Here's a tip to remember: when in doubt (which, if I were you, would be pretty much always), just shut up.

What you have written and posted to this forum to date has made a fair number of people dislike you. That's not an insult or anything, just a plain statement of fact for you to consider. If you, like most of us, prefer to go through life with the respect and regard of other people, you might want to closely examine the way you interact on KB. You have created an image of yourself as a vapid fool with no real interest in or knowledge of bikes.

Bear in mind that this is a forum intended for motorcyclists, which you most definitely are not. Even when discussing non-bike-related topics, that fact remains constant. You are not an accepted part of this particular community; you are simply foisting yourself upon it.

That situation can change, but first, you will have to change.

There are plenty of NZ-based online forums for young people to hang out in and use for their discussions without annoying older folk who associate with each other on the basis of specific shared real-world interests. The suggestion has been made to you several times that you seek out those forums and take your contributions there, rather than using SpankMe's resources (which many of us also support financially on a regular basis) to engage in what the majority of the KB members see as pointless and annoying lollygagging.

Might I suggest that you examine that suggestion on its own merits?

But where's Flash the hounddog?

I'm not sure what my post count was before, and I'm not sure what it is now either. But the site seems to have got more motorcycle-y since the post count revolution, which is where it should be.

Good move, Spank.

Ahhhh, now I understand where half my posts went! LOL (bit slow on the uptake, only just caught up with this thread)

Ah well, until I get me a new bike (aaaaages away I imagine, now that there'll be a nipper to soak up any excess dosh), looks like my post count won't be going up at all!

Meh, who cares? I still get to keep up with what's going on and still get to catch up with the mates I've made through having a bike at one time.

:D

Probably coz all posts in rant and rave count for nought. As you've posted this in "site stuff" you'll see you post count has jumped up by 1. Someone will post a link to Spanks thread about it (I can't be arsed looking for it)

Heres an interesting statistic.

Of the 9351 current members on KB over half (around 4600) have posted only 2 times or less.

Could give people 2900 post credits when they join up and once they are used up then we shoot them.

How about you can't post in Wank and Rave/Offtopic until you've reached Sen. Member status? Maybe people will get the idea that this is a motorbiking community and not bebo-my-face.

Don't worry about having a low post count if you have over 2 posts you above the average.
There are plenty of ways to get it up into the thousands. One easy one is to welcome every new member just make sure your posts are over 10 characters and your sweet.

Infact having a high post count may just be an indication of keyboard diarrhea.

I would like to at least get to 230 posts so I can see who blinged me, but seen as I only contribute when others haven't said what I want to it is a bit hard. Anyway that is my little contribution and another one to the count!

Hi all,
me just being picky, but my post count has stuck on 49, and has been for sometime. How do I fix this? and before any smart ass says, "post more", I have and it hasnt changed.

Any ideas or admins wanna look into this for me, my obsessive compulsive side is rearing its head.

Post count only changes if you post in bike related forums. There was one young lady on here who had a couple thousand posts or something, when the new way of counting came in she was revealed to only have 100 or something.

Some forums don't contribute to post count.
