View Full Version : How sideways can you get?

Found this youtube today of a dude on a Aprilia Supermotard.
Wicked bike control, how he didn't crash is beyond me.....

(dunno if this comes under here, or sport, or adventure, or racing as supermoto is all on it's own !!)

I can get it even more sideways than that, and on a gixxer even!

Currently, however, my ratio of number of times sideways to number of smashed thumbs due to highsiding is one to one.

Hi guys! I'm the one riding in the video and I got a link to this site from the video page.

I am very interested in going to NZ, it seems like my kind of place and I have searched for forums like this one for a long time (wierd I havent found this one!?)

I posted on another forum that I would come over and teach supermoto in the USA if I got someone to pay my trip. About two months later I went over to teach some! Se below for some comments from people taking my class.

If there is any interest in doing this please contact me and we'll work something out. It might not be just one person paying up for everything (like it was when I went to the states). It can be solved by holding schools and taking just enough money out of them to pay for the trip.

You can contact me by mail at first and I'll send you my number or I'll call you: olle@gummark.nu

Heres a couple of other videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSkAvgcgwBQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rthhxn_silk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4t1xW6i2Xs

Heres some comments of the people attending my school:

This was definately a blast, one of the best times I have ever had riding! (20+ years experience on 2 wheels) Dirt section was a bit of a headache at the beginning but once I got to turn one life was great! Thanks again to those involved - ton of fun and can't wait to get back on a closed course.

I was absolutely pleased with the classes. I have been riding bikes for over 10 years all types of sizes.....but only 3 mounths with super-moto and i just got out of my cast from the Aug. 16 race @ e-town, during the 2ed round of practice I fell and broke my wrist in two places and stayed out for a 3ed place finish in the final in one event and 5th in the other. and I was amazed at how much I learned from you Olle & ESMRA. I wish I had the class before that Aug. race. I felt like the techniques were specifically aimed at me.....Olle & ESMRA patiently and thoroughly answered to all my questions. Through-out the classroom sessions....I never felt rushed by anyone when discussing a specific technique or question - in fact, everyone went out of their way to talk to me and offer advice on any subject I wanted to discuss. The professionalism, patience and generosity of Olle & ESMRA staff is second to none.

I have recommended to everyone I know that they should go to your school If you plan on having another one.... hope it's @ E-town on the road course. I plan to come back....as soon as my schedule permits " BABY ON THE WAY ".

absolutely a fantastic time, world class teaching Olle & ESMRA

Thanks again.

Michael Kocsis #199 Team Monmouth Cycles Middletown NJ / ESMRA #10

The class roster was full with 15 students receiving a great SM education. I know by the end of the day, I was turning faster lap times and feeling safer and in more control doing it!

Thank you Olle & ESMRA and organizing crew!

The BBQ spread was GREAT!

Much thanks to all involved. My wife, who is N-O-T impressed by my riding even a little, noted that at the end of the day I appeared to be faster and smoother. So if the wife noticed it, it must have been very obvious.

Again, thanks to all who put in valuable time and effort. It is noted and appreciated. I had a great time riding with everyone and talking with everyone.

Regards,
Barry

Thanks to Olof and all involved for setting this up. Fun (and hot) day - it was good to ride with you guys.

Thanks
Jay

i dont kno about everyone else, but i had a blast at MIR, olle was an awesome teacher, i learned so much, deff worth the 4 hour drive, thanks once again to olle for doing the class, all the people at esmra for making it happen, and to the guy that made the track  (i knew your name, than forgot sorry!) i was one of the guys that helped you pick up the hay bails, but it was an awesome track, and do u have the pictures developed yet??
but seriously guys it was an awesome place, i dont kno when the next practice/race is, but the guy that made the track said that if there is a good turn out, the owners at MIR will build a full track, just for supermoto, so next time there is anything at MIR i'll deff be there, and deff suggest everyone checks it out

They do sound awesome that's for sure, just that I've heard the engines aren't that durable.

Actually, the engines are more durable than the japanese. I know of engines that have been run for 400 hours without doing anything except chaning oil and filter.

The problem is mainly on the 550's and the problem is that the seal between the block halves is bad and it starts to leak water into the oil. On the new engines (08) theres a different sealing material and this should no longer be an issue.

The aprilia is insanely powerfull, my 450 makes about 20hp more than a stock japanese 450 single and I have done none internal work of the engine. The stock chassie is a little bit too much touring but when you've got the chassie working theres nothing like it, or atleast, I havent ridden anything like it.

Initiating a slide on a regular bike isnt that hard but on the modified aprilia it sticks like its on rails. The rear brake is pretty powerfull but you need to put a lot of pressure on it to get the bike to slide like in the vids.

Generally its a heavier bike than the others and it cost a lot more money to get into world class level. If you can live with those two things its probably the best supermoto bike ever. If you are going to race with the bike, buy a VDB replica, its a sharp bike from the start. If you are going to street ride it, buy a 550, its a awesome street bike. (hits 120mph/200km/h on the rev limiter in stock shape)

Welcolme to KB Olof.

Loving those vids man! It would appear that you have a penchant for exploring the limits of traction:niceone:
I like it!

In the first video that Nudemetals posted when it looks like you "overcook" it a bit you seemed to be running a narrow entry, apart from the racing line inside advantage does that work for a fast lap?

You also mention the that you have to use a lot of back brake input with your slides due to the rear grip. Do you use it to initiate the slide and then use the back torque or do you have to keep the brake applied until it's time to hook up again?

Opps Sorry, I've just realised that I'm asking questions that I should be asking you at one of your schools.

Hmmm might have to sell the SV.

Orange, Blue, Red White and Black, Yellow and Blue which colour?

About narrow entry, no, it doesnt help laptimes, except in some specific cases. Actually I'm doing it the wrong way in the videos. I haveto change riding style to be able to ride faster. The swedish riding style is very narrow and I think its because all of the top guys have MX/enduro merits. I also think its because we're not riding fast enough, theres no reason to ride in any other way when we're used to ride like this :)

The correct way is to go deeper into the corner and to not use the rear brake at all except if its a very tight corner and you can gain alot from sliding. But in that case I prefer to powerslide it anyways. With the powerslide you scrubb off speed at the least critical point, if its that kind of corner. (heres an example of that: http://www.mortec.se/e107_plugins/autogallery/autogallery.php?show=Film%202006%2Fshort_clip_from _spain.wmv)

In the vids I use the rear brake to initiate a slide and to transfer from braking to throttle. I think this is the way you need to do to learn how to slide but when you're fast enough you haveto forget it and rely completely on the clutch and the speed you're carrying.

I generally dont speak about sliding in my classes because theres so much more to learn about yourself and what happends on the bike before you learn how to slide. If theres people insisiting on it anyways, I can show and tell, when I have explained how you do it and why people cant do it people seem to realize that its too soon to learn :)

Thanks for the insight Olof, top stuff!

I watched the Scandinavian flick vid after posting, wicked!
That seems to work really well for that corner complex.
I get the power sliding technique but have only raced 450 or S2 class bikes and they don't have the power to unhook the rear predictably on the corner exits like your Aprillia (on dry, clean tarmac anyway and I ain't Nicky Hayden!)

I also gather from watching the the flick vid you must be a fairly fit bugger, do you train off the bike or do you just ride all the time?

Thanks again:2thumbsup

My aprilia is a S2 bike but sure it has a lot more power, however, heres a video from 2006 when I rode a DETUNED crf 450 (watch for the third clip with me, the black honda crf): http://www.mortec.se/e107_plugins/autogallery/Gallery/Film%202006/mortec_bussjo.wmv
The asphalt is clean, its just in the transfer from the two different asphalt surfaces theres a couple of rocks.

I do this to initiate a power slide: Get on the throttle so that it accelerates a little harder than keeping the speed, then, tilt the bike over even more. Since youve got more load on the rear tire it lets go before the front tire, then straighten it up and control it with the throttle and with the lean!

I only practice on the bike, I used to lift weights and run 10 miles but since I started learning motocross in august 2006 I've been too lazy :) It does show on my body tho, not as attractive as I once were ;)

huh, only just found this thread..

I've always admired those who can purposely loose the rear, and keep it pinned. I remember my early days of riding, the instinct was to back off. Didn't learn the real hard way, but dropped a nut or two when the bike bit my ass bout it. I'm better now, in that I keep it pinned and just roll off a touch.

I'd purposely drop a nut to learn how to ride a motard right tho, and lead on to sliding around. In the back of my head, I've been wanting to learn how to powerslide my bike out of corners etc too, but it's a bit too nice to smash up, so I've been really restrictive on myself!

If you did come to NZ, I'd have my name on the list for sure

I'll sure visit NZ some time, as a vacation if nothing else :)

Are you doing the entry slide already? Because it is technically harder than doing a powerslide. The powerslide is just control with the throttle, have enough speed and just open the throttle a little more than usually and it will start spinning. The trick is to open it up much but very very smooth and when it starts to drift just keep it open at the same amount. Baby steps and you'll learn in no time without crashing! :)

Powersliding has no gain in the exit of the corner, its in the middle of the corner where you gain from sliding since it either makes it possible to open up more in the exit or allows you to enter with a little more speed, the second one much more scary ;)

About putting the supermoto to the ground...

I got this pic only for use in this advertisment so thats why I'm not sending the original...

However, can you spot all white plastic bobbins on this pic? ;) I dont think I've hurt anything on the bike during this season and I put it to the ground lots of times :)

I gave up backing it into corners a while ago, saw too many people high side, and nearly did myself. I kept 'playing' with wheelspins on exit, but they're tiny by comparison. I just need a bike with a cage that I'm not afraid to drop, then I'd have some fun. Working on that bit.
I've seen youtube clips of people drifting around on their bikes, into and exiting corners. I'd love to get that good. They're all on rat bikes too.
And yes, I know 90% of it is showing off, I don't care, I just want to know that control

Those ice pics are impressive too. The bike looks like it's pretty much completely on the ground! and you were still moving?!?!?

Its the fear and the natural reactions following it that is the hardest part :(

Yeah those shots are from cornering :)

Well, the bike you're using definitely makes a difference...

I certainly wouldn't count myself as capable when it came to stunts, but I had an sxv550 overnight to try (complete with full race pipe), and by the time I returned it 24 hours later, I had pulled plenty of stoppies (and almost gone over the front once ), a few wheelies, and backed it into a couple of corners.

Bloody fun bikes indeed, just get a large tank, if you're coming into it with a sportsbike mentality, and want to ride it into the country... I lost count on the times I filled it up, and it got 80km before the eager R light came on.

Incredibly fun, but the sxv in particular is completely incapable of behaving normally, when I wanted to on the rare occasion.
