87 gsxr wheels mod

has anyone changed there wheels from the 18" jobs ,whats an easy mod its more the rear id like to know about AS im trying to buy an upside down front end

I havent done that particular mod but its definitely possible.
The good news is Suzuki uses the same parts with minor cosmetic changes over a big range of models
Id suggest given the factory wheel width you'll need a wheel from a late model 400 such as the bandit or gsxr or rf400 possibly even from a RGV 250--youll be stuck with 160 tyres but they are readily available.
What it will mean to you is lining up your sprockets and rear disk is easier to do.
Front end wise-theres a bloke advertising USD stuff on Trade me--his name is norm.
Actually call alex --4168932 he has a USD conversion he was doing on a customers kat750--customer changed his mind--might be going cheap ish

A workmate has changed his 87 gixxer to a 92 GSXR1100 rear, with the 17 inch wheel, so its definitely possible.

Issues for him were resolved by using the later swingarm and modified dogbones to get the ride height correct.

He used an RF900 front end in the conversion.

i brought a 17x2.5 gsx 3 spoke wheel off trade me with good discs but the disc are i little bit smaller than originals
have also brought a gsxr rear 3 spoke wheel with everything 17x3.5 the rear is looking easier to do than the front
may give that guy a call on upsidedowns but im working on a very limited budget so thinking its more than likely gona be outa my price range
being that it is one of the lightest gsxr750s made a set of 400 usd fork could be the go
Another question is ,rear shock old one is a bit tired anyone know of any modern ones that fit????

Sorry mate dont wanna rain on your parade BUT--you need a 3.5 inch front and a 4.5 inch rear-- thatll give you 120/70 17 front tyre and a 160/60 -possibly 70 17 rear tyre

You may also want to look at possibly an RGV250 front end.

And I agree with Frosty about tucking the front - actually its probably more like you would know what hit you - most likely the road. :(

VFR400R single sided swingarm and rear wheel is a nice conversion I've seen done more than once.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the "87 came out with a 110/70-18 front tyre so the original wasn't very wide. Surely a 2.5-17 rim with the correct profile tyre of decent quality would perform better than the old 18"? I would have thought dropping the front and rear by 1/2" would raise ground clearance issues.

Yep you are right they did come with those rim sizes -But the old GSXrs with those tyres would tuck their fronts too-by going to the 120 you are availing yaself of a shit load bigger range of quality rubber --and second hand race stuff too.

Looking at some other stuff on the same site they talked about the standard CBR600F2 brakes being shithouse, so recommended this conversion:

im running a 150 rear on the 18 and its a waste of rubber as the front wears to the edge but the outside of the rear hasnt even been touched by road and im running out of tread in the middle two thirds and dont say it, i dont ride like a nana
I dont run a belly pan so not worried about that clearence
looks like a gs 1200 ss
I think the easy way is to get a whole front end, the rear is looking easy
Looks like i just have to save for 6 months bite the bullet for that amount of time ,get the new front end then wham bam thank you mam..
Im still interested in what people have done and used and how !!!!

So whats the diff between a 18x2.5 and a 17x2.5 why would i be unhappy with the 17 over the 18 and im not being smart!!! I alway thought i heard the 18 were more unstable over the 17
im not going off the edge im saying the wear on the front is more to the outside compared to the rear
