Ive never had anything to do with Airfilters, but decided to clean mine as it was filthy and stuff.

Bought some spray on hose off cleaner, its all good, just waiting for it to dry.

Now Ive just read on the can that I then need to use air filter oil once its dry...

And the bike is in the shed all disassembled..

How important is the oil and what does it do? :)

Cheers

its important, the oil stops the really fine particles of dust etc, oil it.

Hey Morc's,

The oil on the air filter foam actually works.
All the dust and grime off the road that gets sucked into the air filter sticks to the air filter foam....... stops it going further.

Have you got a manual for your bike, it will tell you what oil to use.
You dont need a lot of oil.
Just dribble a tiny amount of oil (5mls should do it) over the foam...... squeeze it throu and then squeeze off the access oil.
Let it sit for a hour or so and re squeeze it... then put it back in.

ie: my bike manual says to use SAE 10W30 motor oil in my air filter in my bike.
I had some SAE 10W40 in my garage and used 5 mls of that.
(It was the 10W that i looked at for the oil......)

you can buy a 1 litre bottle of air filter oil at Henderson motorcycle shop for $15
(which will last you forever and ever)

Check out your manual first to see what it needs.
I did that and found out what I could use..... see above post.

First thing your bike does have a foam filter right? Usually stock they are disposable paper ones but I have replaced mine in the VFR with a foam Unifilter and trust yours is something similar.

In the good old days before all this spray on fantastic stuff we did just use a thick gear oil like EP90 which we massaged in to the filter with our fingers. I suspect lower viscosity engine oil would be OK if you did make sure it had a nice total coverage without over doing it.

Umm, the OE RVF400 filter is paper. Don't put anything on it. Get a new one.

Start saving you dollars! ;)

'Let your fingers do the walking.........' (blardy telecom advert)
and phone up the Honda bike shops to get prices.
Also check out the aftermarket price as well.
To compare prices

Wild West Honda - Great North Rd, New Lynn (in the old Repco building)

So did you have a paper air filter or a Foam air filter in your bike that you have taken out?

Damn good point.
How much are they though? knowing OEM Honda parts prices....$$$$I can't remember how much I paid. It's all pretty hazy. I remeber some stones bleeding, a few tears and my firstborn being taken away from me.

Edit: You could obtain some filter foam and replace the paper with that.

clean and replace.

I thought when you started this thread you were talking about a FOAM air filter......

I shouldve been more specific...

I usually just shove a K&N filter in a bike and be done with it. Much easier :)

There was an oil crc'ish type residue in the airbox.

You check with EconoHonda?

Don't put any oil on the paper element.

Buy a foam one like Unifilter - usually about the same price as paper OEM but last for years.

There was an oil crc'ish type residue in the airbox. That's come from the crankcase breather. It's from the engine. A little is normal.

Read my lips....DO NOT OIL A PAPER FILTER ELEMENT!!!!
Now, can you be a clever boy and repeat that back to us??

*MUST NOT OIL A PAPER FILTER*

Yeah I think I got it :D

Took the stuntbike down to my old mans workshop and just blew the buggar out and shoved it back it.

All good.

Cheers guys :)

I bought a new OEM Honda filter for my bike. Funnily enough once I got it out of the (ancient) air-tight packet (I think it was new-old-stock from 1980 heheh), it was already slightly oiled. Thought about oiling it again but the correct amount of oil for those filters is really small (squeeze out the excess!) and seemed perfect already.

Are all Honda OEM foam filters like that? Pre-oiled?
