Saw a guy today on some sort of chopper bike on Fergusson Drive in Upper Hutt wearing all of a short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts, jandals....and no helmet, just a backward facing baseball cap.
*sigh*
Don't care if it was a short test ride and nothing more, he's an idiot whoever he is.
No point reporting it cos by the time you're done, they're long gone.

I've become much more aware of what gear (or lack of it) people have on after my slide along the road a few months ago. I would have been a real mess if not for my Sidi boots, cordura jacket and pants, helmet and gloves.
All the gear, all the time!

He visits the house just across the road from me a lot.
I am SO tempted to deal to that stupid bike. He can't seem to decide whether he's riding on the footpath or the road that feller.
Darwin's Law will catch up with him eventually.

Saw a $hitload of bikers today in Hamilton. I'd say about 1/3 of them were wearing just t-shirts. Most bizarre were the 3 who had leather jackets on but no gloves. Weren't hanging about either. Honestly, I'm beginning to change my opinion about whether there should be a law about "minimum riding gear".

No no no no no - We don't need the Nanny state interfering more than they do already!!. I don't agree with wearing bugger all safety gear, but I will defend the right to decide not to....

Yeah stuff that, I don't care what anyone says it is nice sometimes to ride with few cloths on, much the same as it is to swim naked  Sure it is dangerous, but so is motorcycling in general. Only 10 mins ago I had some FUCK tard do a three point turn/U turn right over the brow of a hill, pulled him over & gave him a right serve too :argue: (did have ALL of my gear on too) But hey, it is a risk some take from time to time to wear bugger all clothing. A few days ago on a day off I was organising my new radar mounting, twas a nice day & I only had to go a short distance in town & on the same street as I live so was in street clothes, would of been a right piss off if I would of had to wear all the gear for such a short inner city ride (didn't go over 40Km/h)

theres nothing wrong with running no gear around town in 50kph areas, if its a nice day i only run a t shirt and shorts around auckland, no different than if your cycling, but i suppose with some of you nazis cyclists should be doning a 1 piece leather suit

A few months?? maybe a week tops unless your`ve got fused elbows and knees and dont roll an inch. Push biking many years ago to and from primary school resulted in a couple get offs pushing this speed with nothing more than a few grazes that only gave grief in the shower that night, and maybe the folling night.

BigDog Training Wheels Myself and the other dude (who does the wheelstands) were teaching a newbie in the lower carpark out near Miss Q's Westgate..
Heard a chopper go screaming past us on the next road over from the walkway....we spied the cops driving down the road near the carpark...did a u turn and chased the chopper!!
He wasnt wearing any safety gear, no helmet, and was opening it up to quite a speed.
We stood there watching with amusement, cops followed chopper boy round the corner...waited for a bit then the cops drove off.
Chopper boy rode back with his tail between his legs.
Dumbass!

yeah, free choice and all that...free Tame Iti...blah blah
Just a thought though around the needless expense & time you take up in a hospital emergency waiting room/bed/operating room etc to fix your sorry "freedom" arse.
Common sense and personal responsibility come in to play here.

Pushbike average speed 25Kph so unless you're riding at that speed your argument hold no weight.
There's plenty good quality, light and ventilated motorcycle gear out there. Hell, they could wear a light denim jacket. It's just that some folks spend 20 grand on their bike but won't spend 200 bucks on their safety gear. I mean no gloves, for fucks sake. I'm sure pose value has nothing to do with their decision. No wonder half the car drivers think we're brain dead scum.

Once came round the corner in my car, to find a mini chopper heading my way.
He'd wandered onto my side of the road due to waving at some people at a house on his right. *1
Managed to stop (speed appropriate to residential area) and he got a fright and went round me.
Now, maybe it's his choice not to wear any safety gear, but if he'd hit me he'd have left a whole lot more blood on my car than if he'd been properly covered. *2
*1: Maybe that's why he had no gloves?
*2: Speaking of cover: "insurance"???

The trouble is that these people don't just put the chlorine in their own gene pool, they affect others too.
My partner and I will see people like these on the road and just look at each other, shake head and say "statistic"

their head is below car door window height and they're completely unprotected!
now while i personally will not ever ride without gloves, helmet and a decent layering of clothes (usually jeans/codura jacket for commuting, full kit for riding), i don't want it to be forced upon me by law until (if) acc is thrown out (cause the drivers will be responsible for their medical bills)
3rd party insurance on the other hand, should be mandatory. i have full cover for that exact reason, younger brother was not so smart (turns out small claims are a waste of time)

Oi'm saddened.
Surely we can find something else to spend energy on? Something that isn't about compelling others to behave how we want them to?

Me too, and the Internet is a great valve for letting off steam about "issues", but the reality is that people are only compelled to wear a helmet and that is probably the only thing "Joe Public" would notice is missing.
There's positive ways of pimping gear and a couple of those is leading by example and discussing gear rationally when approached.
Pointing at the unbelievers and yelling "Burn Them!" is getting a bit old.

I'd say the house, the car and half your salary some 3 years down the line ;)
...that is IF you manage to get it out of the shop.
Safety gear not adequate though. Vinyl can give nasty burns as well.

Speaking of not using proper riding gear.
Saw a nice MV Agusta on my way to uni today. Was dismayed to see the "cool guy" on the bike wearing shorts and t-shirt. Would have thought he could afford some gear to go with the bike really.
There are simply heaps and heaps of people around Chch like that these days though (and I do not mean people with MV Agustas).
