View Full Version : Hells bells! The price of petrol!!

After having a jolly weekend gallivanting, meeting lots of new KBers and reminding myself exactly why I like my bike so much, I'm doing the usual Monday reconcile of the books.
800km of petrol at moderate speeds cost me nearly $60!!! And because I'm on a pain in the arras budget until either I win lotto or can work full time again, this means gallivantings will have to be severely curtailed. I simply can't afford that sort of money on a regular basis.
Anyone else out there now having to think twice before they fire up their steed and head off purely for the hell of it?
Where is that conspiracy theory water fuelled engine when you need one?

always think twice sometimes about filling and burning they $60 a day, or $100 if me and motogirl go out.
We don't smoke, not really drinkers, no kids, so might as well enjoy life while we can, and forgot about it until next time.

Heh, well I still remember fuel bills for $600+ a month for my little ol'hornet alone ... but then being an unattached bachelor and not other concomitant life expenses allows me to indulge my passion for pootling.
Tell you what though, plugging $70 into the cage always gets me to go "sheesh!" ... thats like 4-5 tanks of gas for my little ol'hornet!
Just ride when you can, for as far as you can, for as long as you can! :msn-wink:

Gee last December (2006) I travelled from Auckland to Upper Hutt and back up via Masterton, Napier/Hastings to Taupo then up past Auckland to Whangarparoa and finally back down to Auckland around 1500 to 1600 kms travelled for only $85.
Oh yeah I did it on a Yamaha Virago 250cc bike......:bleh::niceone:

And your $60 works out as how much per hour?
At least 8 hours at legal speeds :)
At $7.50 per hour thats cheap entertainment...

Hell no I never look at the price of petrol as it could depress me and I'd have to post in a different "thread".
If we want to do the Coro Loop it a $100+ day out, just the way it is.
Power loads cheaper than buying P and we get a far better buzz

I'm used to $1 per litre in Qld, though even that's gone up to (shock) $1.20 lately.
But I've decided that a weekend away every second week is doable. No point being too miserable about it. And I only bought two coffees this weekend, and no snacks, which saves me the price of a tank of gas, easy.
I was just horrified that my bike now costs only slightly less than my (highly economical) diesel car to run over the same distance, if I don't take in to account ruc's.

I just think about how much more expensive it was to run the car (and yep - I took the car out just for fun as well).
So the cost of fuel dosnt stop me doing anything - Im actually 'saving' money by taking the bike out!

Hate to say it but it costs more for us to run our bikes...even just taking one of them over the same course.
A bike-fix is well worth any cost IMO

Your bike cost more in fuel than your car?
you either:
Need a bigger car (A hybrid is NOT a car)
Need to drive your car the same way you ride a bike.
Need to get a lighter pillion
Need to get a smaller bike (Tui: Yeah Right)

Hey you...good to know you're on the road again...:2thumbsup
I definitely have to think twice about gallivanting  : got a kid and a few other expensive little items to repay, one of them being my bike...Plus, (dare I say it?), biking is not the only hobbie 007XY and I like to indulge in :o
That's one of the reasons I like my little VTR...she's extremely economic and will do easily about 320 / 330 kms (open road @ legal speed) on a tank full, which cost me only $20 or so...

I figure that riding to work is saving me $50 a week plus I get a minimum of 30minutes extra lesiure time per day.
If prices keep going up the next bike is gonna have to be as frugal as the GN to justify it's purchase.

Heheh, my biking has costed me in fuel more than what I ever did in the cage (mind you, it's only a Ford Telstar Orion, languishing on the lawn, out of WOF and Rego :o)
I still like the look on people's faces when they have the typical following conversation with me..
"Oh, so you got a motorbike then? I guess you got it to save on gas?" (typical non-biker line)
my reply? "Actually, I use more fuel through my bike than I ever did in the car! $600 a month more!"
All relative I guess, as bikers we get "it" more than a standard cage driver ever would ... it ain't about the numbers (though some are more important to bikers :msn-wink:), it ain't about the price of incidentals .... it's about doing what we love and maybe meeting a few like-minded souls along the way to enjoy our passion! :woohoo:
Make mine a triceratops, followed by a whale and to finish off, a stegadon to get me home! :scooter:

Tis $1.18 this morning. Qld, not the rest of aus. Which makes it $1.40 unzud. But I should stop whingeing, if I look at it like I'm paying an extra 30c a litre not to ride in mid thirties heat and 90% humidity, things look rather more appealing!

I didn't know you were Irish Bananaman! :msn-wink:
Petrol is not a luxury in this household. We run a couple of 4 wheeled vehicles for work, I hate filling mine thats why I have a bike now, the van is a must have or we cant earn vehicle so petrol is a fact of life for it. Weekend fuel purchases are as important to us as breathing, fill the tank and off we go!
I recommend anyone struggling with the cost of petrol, put a ride out on their bike as a top priority in their budgets, and spend accordingly so they can get out there and live!

If people are getting depressed about the price of fuel now, what is it going to be like once it goes over two dollars a litre? Don't poohoo the idea either as many think that its just a matter of time.
Oh and $60 for 800km ain't bad either, could also be much worse on another type of bike fanging it...

So the extra 15c we pay out West enables us to ride in high 30's heat but lower (20%) humidity.

Yep, lived in Perth as well and bloody pleased not to be there also.
Have been through the budget and discovered all sorts of niceties which could be scrapped and therefore allow for more petrol purchasement. Where there's a will, there's a way . . . :niceone:

The price is petrol is bloody cheap when you consider what we get out of it. Even at $3 a litre it would still be cheap.
The flip side of rising petrol prices is that there will be fewer boy racers and other dickheads on the road. I think we can all live with that.

Petrol nowadays is far cheaper than it was fifty years ago compared to earnings. In 1958 my weekly wage would buy 56 gallons, (255ltrs app)
Todays average wage, around $800 would buy 450trs at $1,80 a ltr.
A Triumph Bonneville cost around 9 months wages.
Today's Bonnie would be less than 5 months.
Bring back the bad old days and we'll really have something to complain about.:ride:

I have to admit that I haven't seen any real reduction either. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.
I forgot to add to my earlier post that the other major benefit from a rising petrol price should be reduced traffic congestion. There is also a possibility that houses in the suburbs will get a bit cheaper (since they will be less desirable for commuters). Again I will keep my fingers crossed.

As far as all things fluid goes....petrol aint that bad really...1 Litre of milk will set you back ...$2.39....Bottled water is up there also, if you need it you will buy it, we were in Rarotonga a few months back and 1 Litre of Anchor Milk cost $ 7.10...Fuel was over the $2 mark but we had scooters so no worries really, i have no problem with the price of petrol, i need it so i pay for it...its the fuel companys i have a problem with. 800 km cost you $60? whats wrong with that, bet you had cool time doing it. I see your point tho', but i personally dont worry about the price of something that gives me a heap of pleasure...

Have been thinking a lot on this one since I posted, and really the price of petrol is not my main whinge, it's my lack of being able to work full time. My job is great and my hourly rate is pretty damn good, but with a failing kidney transplant I can't get out there and really hustle for work like I want to do.
So if anyone on the roads sees a Darwin award in the making and thinks the person involved might be blood type O, flick me a pm will ya? I'll be up in a jiffy with a knife and fork - Roberta's your auntie!

Why is possible to burn farts?
Farts burn because they contain methane (sometimes) and hydrogen, both of which are flammable gases. (Hydrogen was the same gas that was used in the ill fated Hindenburg dirigible.)
Farts burn with a blue or yellow flame. According to Dr. James L. A. Roth, a blue flame is indicative of the presence of methane in the flatus. Since methane producers are an elite group (only 1/3 of the population), an exclusive club called the Royal Order of the Blue Flame has been established that is open only to them. Mate-in-a-State has video footage of flatus ignition. Observe the color of the flames. These people are not methane emitters.
Im tempted to start collecting my farts and extract the methane and hydrogen from them to run my bike. :Pokey:
