View Full Version : Matte Black Paint

Want to paint various sections of my RSV matte black, and I would get crazefox to do it for me but I use the bike as my commuter fuggit.

So questions:

I've been reading some of the Aprilia Forums and a large number of them say that I should just buy some spray cans of black primer and matte clear. Sound about right? Doesn't have to be a real nice finish... its an 8 year old bike after all.
I'd love to paint a piece in a day and be able to ride the bike later... how quickly will the primer dry and can I get away with putting the parts back on the bike quickly-ish (in non-contact areas)?
Should I use a coat of Matte Black and then top coat of Satin Black instead of using a matte/satin clear?
I've read (on KB) that a matte coat will mark easily (of course) but pledge will get prevent this happening?
Sanding before the first primer coat... is it just to 'rough it up', or should I leave it if the initial surface is good?
Which black-primer?

Advice very welcome. I have had a good read of DMNTD's similar thread but it didn't address all my ...erm... issues.

Get a pro to do it and take the bus... given the questions that you're asking, I'll think you'll find matt black a bit of a hoe. Surface prep is critical on a matt finish, it shows up everything... black is bad enough for that already!

VHT saturn black ex Repco. Will be dry in a couple of hours. $10ish a can you get what you pay for, at least you can touch it up whenever you like.

Cheers Buddha.

Should mention that the parts aren't huge... just small, but ugly small panel/parts. If all goes well (and its not bad) I'll paint the upper fairing/nose thingy in a similar fashion.

I've had a go with most of the spray cans, I've found the Duplicolor stuff that Repco sells is worth the extra 2 bucks a can. Get yourself some bumper or plastic primer whilst you're at it. An automotive bodyshop will be able to sell you some scuff pads. That'll rough up the surface nicely so that it adheres. You can leave it in a box with a lightbulb to speed the curing, just don't make it too hot.

I have, mint too (should have remembered to ask you). Satin finish?

Deano

I think it was the preparation that caused the satin finish in places........so maybe not THAT mint.........good enough for a race bike though, or a dirty ole v-twin eh mate ?

Park it out front of your house one night and I'm sure in the morning it'll be painted for you. If you want it matte black, leave the paint next to the bike.

Ride it around without the fairings for a couple of days? Do, like, a really nasty streetfighter on it. Shame, had you decided to do this a couple of weeks back you could have borrowed mine :(

Already minus lower fairings (being prof painted black - pre-sale) ... sick of water/oil bladders/containers everywhere... reminds me of old people's colostomy bags.

Dude have you looked at option er-D
Rip all the plastics off you want/ need painted then see whats left of the bike.
Use Zip ties to hold what you need to ride held on
The bike doesnt need to be pretty to be ridden
then send the plastics away and enjoy polishing the exposed metal

Yeah I could lose the tail section, side panels if not wet. Tail-light assembly no, think the headlight needs the nose cone/fairing. Do-able though.

and then sand it back and do it properly the next day.

Looks like I might have a car real soon so the quick drying factor may not be an issue. Still keen as to paint it though.

Well we painted a whole car matt black in 1 hour and drove it it was allgood so a bike shouldnt take long to do with spray cans i guess

Came home tonight with a can of grey primer (couldn't find black) and some satin black. Sprayed silver taillight bit and silver side bits with primer and it dried f**king quick. Ashamedly I rattled away at the satin-black can and started spraying about an hour later... I'm impatient. A hairdryer session (on the panels) and a few more coats later and I put the bits back on the bike and it looks friggin awesome. Few runs in paint but, meh, its in old bike anywayz.

I'll take some photos if anyone cares to look later on. Will most likely do the tail section this saturday, and maybe, look at painting the front fairing too. The satin DOES look good though.

I think the paint will dry quite happily all by itself - otherwise they would have to sell it with its own baking oven. Perhaps it is meant to be resistant to heat, up to that temperature?

That satin finish looks nice, should be easier to clean than a flat matte finish.I notice you advertise KTL motorcycles??? fk your keen i have heard some pretty dodgy stories come from 'ol motorhaus (Kerry sellin bikes with wrong year & model etc).. ditch that sea anchor too m8 an after market can will be 1/3 the weight.

Have you met Kerry at KTL? He's a friggin awesome dude and he and his mates are putting their own cash into getting two very good mates racing on some mint 749R bikes. Thats the kind of thing I judge people on, not hearsay

So anyone know if you can use paint-stripper on fairings?

LOL, no it wasn't that bad, but it is a semi-serious question.

I took the tail section and two front flappy bits and spent farking ages trying to get the damn stickers off. Primered/sanded/primered...ran out of primer/sanded/satin-black/light-sand/satin/satin/satin/ran out of satin, and they turned out ok. All but one piece had a bit that went a bit funny. Thought was a reaction to something but have concluded that maybe I didn't dry them sufficiently. Oh well. Its not too obvious.

So... the entire back half of the bike is satin-black... I think its good, but needs something else. Maybe some white number-boards? I have pics but will have to post tomorrow as I can't find camera cable at home. Fuggit.

I'll get some pledge and give the paint a clean... I've had a go at taking the front-fairing off to see how easy it is, and now I'm contemplating painting that myself. I might be more judicious with the primer/sanding with that bit. I used two cans of satin with the work I've done so far, might get away with one for the front. Dunno.

If you have more bits to do, to get the decals off, use a hairdryer or hot-air gun on them first, which should get them off pretty easily. You can clean any residue off with lost of things: petrol, eucalyptus oil, paint brush cleaner, WD40, etc. Follow up with meths to get any oily residues off.

John Stockton :niceone: bling awarded. I think he lead the NBA in assists for a couple of years.

Cheers Vifferman, had a heatgun and it kind worked, just think the damn things were baked on. I was curious as to what stuff to use to get the bloody gum off. Didn't even think of WD40 (CRC556 same?). Blistered thumb attests to my method of choice on the day *burns!*

Photos for those interested. I know this isn't the first time that someone has painted a bike, but I need some more advice.

The tail looks pretty boring now. Was thinking of placing some of the Aprilia Decals (red flag ones pictured) under the seat hump on both sides. Maybe some of the other decals. Even considered a white stripe down the center of the tail section. Ideas?

Do something about your faded seat. Get some Vinyl spray from Repco (about $10-12 I think). Works a treat. You just have to re-apply it every so often to keep the seat looking like new

EDIT: Looks good though, but definately needs something to make it a bit more interesting

Have another question!!!

I've repainted a couple of panels Gloss Black and while they are a bit more glossy than the satin, its not by much.... however I'm sure that I can polish/buff it up heaps... do I use a cutting compound to do that? ...or maybe a coat of clear would make it shinier?
