View Full Version : The best straights in the country

In the quest for balls out flat n true straights............where are they? What's your favourite section of tarmac? And why.
I would have to say the Ramarama area is pretty damn good. One point there is a 5km section (used for speedo testing). The road is soooooo smooth flat n true, non of this pot hole business.
Followed closely (no pun intended) by the Orewa to upper north shore, not straight all the way of course but close enough & very good quality surface.

Well there are a couple of nice straight roads around Canterbury...
To mention two notables:
Old Tram Road near Oxford - Russel Wright and Bob Burns set a couple of land speed records there back in 1955 on the 27th of July. (261 km/h for a sidecar and 298 km/h for a motorcycle).
Chertsey-Kyle Road near Ashburton - Phil Garrett and Glenn Hayward set the new land speed record for a side car at 271 km/h on the 12th of July 2005.
There are many more however, the Canterbrian plains are good for flat straight roads.

Coppa 1: "hey thats a pretty straight bit of road there Bill"
Coppa 2: "yeah tis pretty straight Phill, bet no one EVER exceeds the speed limit on it, lets move our laser gun to that 30 km/h corner aye, see what we can get"
The funny thing with paranoia is sometimes they ARE actually watching

Play "spot the cop". Radar, laser AND cameravans tax that area.

There are a few out towards Gordonton-Taupiri ways. Know they're great in the car - have yet to try on a bike. Also Maungateparu has a road connecting to Morrinsville - another brilliant road - twisty to start then long straights with nicely cambered corneres.

As for straight roads....BORING!!! if ya want straight roads go to the States...
I say give me twisties any day, hell of a lot more fun, less chance of getting a speeding ticket (depending how tight the twisites are) and anyone can open it up and ride fast in a straight line.
There is no skill in it.

It may just because I ride a slow small-capacity thumper, but how very fucking boring. It's on the straights I remember again that having such low clip-ons really does make your wrists ache, and your back numb, and oh! that seat is really piss-poor, and that vibration through the tank just makes your thighs and knees go tingly.
Reminds me of how crude the so-called suspension is as well; in the corners it's fun and engaging and direct, but going straight ahead it just feels harsh and uncomfortable.

Only had the bike out puke twice (120 laps), but I definately didnt feel safe on the straight, the gutter/join in the middle and the kink, fun but not safe.
waipu, piha, peak rd 4 corners from the golf club, miranda and ruawai all good fun. Straights are loads of fun if they have a smooth corner at the end.

True... The only thing that makes a straight piece of road bearable is more speed so it's over faster. Funny though, the Police have actually managed to figure that out too, so guess where they tend to sit?
There was this piece of road I wanted to try the Hornet on. Not very wide but a couple of long straights, no houses, not much traffic, no shrubbery beside the road, nothing growing higher than about 20 centimetres.
Absolutely nowhere for anything bigger than a mouse to hide...
Everytime I've been there in that frame of mind, good tyres, and bike recently serviced etc, it has either been raining or blowing a gale...
Maybe in a month or so the VFR can try its luck.
Oh, it's a private road of course

When visiting my son at Rangitata River mouth area I normally turn off at Hindes and head out there. Loooooooooooong straights, very little traffic.
Junior now reports seeing plain car parked observing the straights ! Bastards !
Had a dream once where my Z1000 was tapped out at 238 and a TLR pulled up beside me with the rider smiling before he left me in the dust.
I hate those dreams, they seem so real at the time....

Actually there is a road out past Rutherford road (you'll notice that I don't mention the road so people stay off and I can have my fun) that is 12KM long - measured it with my own speedo (not the undies/togs either) That's a very short drive - or at least it seems it...
Anyway back to my point - hence 10KM doesn't seem so unrealistic - I can't remember the length of my other road but it's pretty long too. Then there is telephone road past puketaha and I can't remember the length on that either but it's about as long also - but too bumpy to have fun on really.

Come for a ride with Twinkle on his GN250 some time. He'll run fucking rings around your Riffer in the twisty bits.
I think you missed the point of biking in general. I watched you start off on an SR250 -- yes, not much better than a GN250, an acceptable commuter. Then straight to an 100hp 750, then to an RF900, a large massively powerful sports tourer. I don't know quite how to put it in words, but there's a certain attitude there that tells me you need to spend time on an SRX400 or even Jim2's Kat to learn more about two wheels. I'm hardly an old hat -- I've only been riding a bit less than twice the amount than you have -- but I personally (and rather boastfully) think I've cottoned on to what motorcycling is perhaps about.
0-100kph times, radar scanners and doing runners from the police it ain't.

Pretty much you can easy do a drive to include all of em and if you're up for it include a gravel road or two for added entertainment. I don't do them so often anymore - petrol prices, theives and flatmates stealing radar detectors have seen to that. But when I used to they were great.

Straights are all good. I am straight, I like my whiskky straight and I like people to deal with me straight. However a dead long straight piece of road can be a tad boring, unless there is some corner you can then nail hard under brakes into...and then a whole lot more corners...

North Canterbury, SH1 past the police truck check point heading north, turn left opposite that big winery. over the railway line, slight LH kink and there you are. Nice bit of wide straight road, recently sealed and only grapes and olives being grown so no escaped sheep to deal with. The only time straights are good are when you get to pass people or when you need to get somewhere as quickly as possible. But neither reason is good enough for me to have a favourite piece of straight road.

OK, I'll address this seriously instead of just poking Boob with a stick.
We shouldn't be talking about straight roads like this. Not really. Because we all know what happens on straight roads with two wheels and 100+hp, don't we?
Unspeakable naughtiness. That's what.
Straight roads are only fun if:
A. You have a Harley, or
B. You're riding at eekity hundred and plentyseven kilometers per hour.
Need I remind y'all that the Public Eye is upon us, these days? And that it might be wise to maintain an appropriate projection of sobriety and law-abidingness?
It's a semi-unwritten almost-rule - you don't write publically about significantly exceeding the speed limit.
It may happen... I couldn't possibly comment. But it is not a topic that stands up well to public scrutiny.
This is my point.

Just when you think he had dribbled his last load of shit he brings up some more

But... but... I thought getting in a 'yo momma' meant that I'd won.
Obviously this issue has gone beyond sensible debate, and must now be settled with cream pies at dawn.
