Joined KB today and currently learning to ride - have a very patient boyfriend. Live in central Auckland, and would like any recommendations of good instructors for basic skills handling. Ta.

Welcome along.
Can't help with the riding but if you ever need a good lesson in crashing, let me know.

hopefully i won't need one of those for at least 9 months! crashing at under 70km sounds much less scary.
Pr'olly pay to just try keep it rubber side down right from the start really. Good luck anyways.

You'll come to expect that from gxsr riders... they like having a little rest in a corner from time-to-time.
Welcome to KB! :scooter:

Riderskills is very good...
Not sure where he is based, but the other option (who I used) was John Wright, who's in the phonebook. He runs the courses out near Manukau tho, so perhaps too far for you to go?
Don't listen to the trashy one... he doesn't like mint bikes :sunny:

come along to the AWNMR on Wednesday evenings. Ther are all a very helpful bunch and everyone is there to improve there skills rather than show how big there packages are if your worried about being hassled about your skills. Everyone has to start somewhere and it's good your wise enough to realise you need a hand. Heres a link to the AWNMR THREAD (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=53059)

Hi there. I spoke to an instructor from Auckland at Big Boys Toys on the weekend. I haven't got his details but if you ring the boys at Motomail they will have his number 0800 MOTOMAIL

Highly recomend these guys. Had done no riding and by the end not only was I capable of handling the bike but had my skills certificate for my learners.
For those who need to learn road skills they have another course. You go out into the real world followed by an instructor with 2 way comunicaton between both helmets.
haven't done this stage but am planning to.
Is held at Rosebank Road so not too far from you.

Yeah, does he have a car? come and visit us in Albany Mega center at 7:30pm
He can go on my bike and see how it feels  My bike is very very learner friendly (as she did to me )
Always welcome!! :sunny:

Yes but if you don't have a bike they provide one and it includes sitting your basic handling skills certificate.
Me, i have incredible bad balance and had to really work at it. The guys there were so patient and really took the time to get me up to speed before the test. Without them I doubt I would have passed.
Now my other half has to take my bike to work to keep me off it :innocent:

I did my basic handling with RiderSkills as well, and can recommend them most highly.
V patient and got me from complete novice (what's these handle things for???) to legal and rolling in 3 hours for $130 with all gear supplied.

Recommend John also. Runs sessions on a Sunday, go from nil riding ability to getting your basic handling certificate in one session.
He runs his sessions at 11 Dalgety Drive, Wiri. His phone number is (027)2275766.
Welcome to KB. Be careful, it's easy to spend waaay too much time on here!

When you stop crashing or stalling then you know you are on the right track...
Are you after a qualified instructor or an experienced rider? both offer good advice, The instructor will only instruct on a particular level will keep it simple and within the road limits.
If you are after someone experienced, then you can go on rides with them, follow their lines, learn and watch how they ride. They will coach you along, and you will learn different things.
Basic handling is simple once mastered.

Yeah they're good but pricey...I did my test with them but they were only $90 back then.
I did notice the tester got pretty impatient with this other guy doing it at the same time as me....cause he kept stalling and wasn't really "getting it"
Mt Eden Motorcycles have sessions too, and they were $70 last time I checked, but I'm not sure how much training there is in that, or if it's just sitting the test, and I think it might be with that same guy out in Manukau.

I went with riderskills, did the 'test only' thing. Flew through it. I'm sure you will too. You get to lose 3 points I think it is? And you lose points for things like missing the stopping target in the emergency stop / quick stop event, stalling your engine, etc.

What he said. It gave me enough to be able to learn without having to worry about dropping it and stall it all the time. Plus when you get better, there are courses to teach you to ride on the road in traffic safely.

hey,
yes i know this is a really dumb question, but the basic handling is just like a lesson right? (looking to do mine in the near future as a bike looks like it's comming my way!! YAY!!!)
I keep getting mixed comments and no one really tells me what it is lol.
shoot me if it's been said before though, to be honest i couldnt be bummed to read the rest of this ^.^ (well i skimmed)...

hang on.. so there's a lesson and test or a just test version, correct?
did you learn with someone else before you did the "just test"??

Either, depending on where you go. I did the test only several years ago, but the assessor did give tips and was fairly lenient. I'd had a bit of time on farm bikes as a youngster.
Depends on how confident you are I suppose and whether you've spent any time on bikes in the past.

true.. okay, well i've only really been on the back of bikes (have learned the fine art of hanging onto a pillion seat!) and have sat on some learning the bits and bobs and have only made a bike actually GO once in my life, which was about 3 meters along a driveway lol.
i'd prefer to learn with someone i know first like in a carpark or piece of farm somewhere before i do a lesson or test (or both) with a stranger... I was nervous enough doing my restricted in a cage!

Fair enough then :niceone: Just make sure the bike, the person, the gear and the location are suitable, and you'll be fine. The worst that can happen is you'll lay the bike down gently when you lose your balance going slow - you'll be too s%^& scared to go fast and have a big off  That's what happened to me when test riding my gpz  - fortunately the bike shop owner was cool about it.

cheers, well Ive got at least 3 people whom I know very well and who have a range of different skills to help me out (magua, Renegade Master and Indy) as for gear, should be totally sweet with that.. heh, getting new pants and boots soon!
but yeah, lol.. i'm probably going to fall over at the first corner i get to.. lol
cheers

Agreed. These guys are good. They pushed me pretty hard when I did mine, I did most of it in second gear on a GN125 with no brakes and clutch allowed but I learnt a lot from it and my riding improved a lot since then. I got it first time round, it was a huge confidence boost for me. Highly recommend these guys. :2thumbsup

Passrite does them too by the looks of it. $150 for the training and cert! (or $175 and you get a roadcode)..

Remember that as fuel etc goes up, so must their prices! I think a 2 hour professional lesson plus the test in a nice and friendly environment is pretty damn good for $130!

it's taken me ages to save up! (earning less than 100 a weak, it's REALLY hard!)
but now I'm on the way! bring on the challenge!
