Well, everyone involved (the TV station, the advertising companies, etc.) knows that it's all a game. Sex sells, provokes "rigtheous" fury and stirs shit - as such it's the perfect marketing tool!

The more stuff like this we see, the less shocking it gets, the more outrageous the next bit of TV has to be to get the ratings. Its a slippery slope.
