Just remember they don't put the bales out for testing days, like they do for bike racing and track days. So if you push a bit hard and lose it into the armco it will hurt a lot more.

When I got the info from the guy who runs the open days, he said the last open day no-one turned up. So it's possible you could have the whole track to yourself for the day. :D

The open days I've been too had very few bikes.

Who has a name and number for Manfield for a similar schedule?

Plus - when is the supposed closing of Puke happening (if at all)???

Manfeild has theirs on their website: http://www.manfeild.co.nz

I think puke is closing to the V8's because of increased horse traffic, and more money being offered from other venues.
I suppose it is inevitable that it will close to all motorsport if that is the trend. It has to do with Karaka track being sold to developer scum to build more rat houses.:angry2: */rant*
We'll see, so enjoy while it lasts.

Went to the open track day at Mansfeild on the 2nd Jan. F*cken awesome day for novices like me. I will never be a full-on track racer, but it give me an oppertunity to put myself and my bike (had the VFR750 then) harder, with the result of better haddling of the bike (bloody good hoon too). $30 bucks each rider. Had the rounds in slow, medium, fast and racing. This meant that riders were in groups matching the ability of their bikes and themselves. Lots of bikes.
Hoping they do days like these at Puke as well. The open days at Puke I've seen so far don't seem to have much structure.
Plan to go to the open day at Puke this Friday to try out the new bike (CBR1000FL), but will not be keen if I am too out classed (rider ability, not the bikes). I'd just fuck-off the faster riders and risk trashing a bike that I've only just got.

PS: If Puke closes ot Motor Racing, have they thought about ulturnitives? Thought they should put a track around, or by Meremere. What do you think?

Kwaka-Kid
3rd March 2004, 16:18
i agree mate! and im SURE you wont be outclassed or piss anybody off! the track is open to all, and you have to start somewhere if you know what i mean, hell chances are youll lap my little 400 within each session, give it a go mate!

Gates are closed when vehicles are racing- no insurance cover if you are one of those racing and bin it! :shifty:

Dunno where the gate rule came from but when the track is in use, they ALWAYS shut the gates.

Unless you have insurance covering you for racing (F-ing expensive!!), you are never covered for while riding on the track.

You don't have to push it too hard. Just go with what feels right. :niceone:

RiderInBlack
20th April 2004, 06:55
Shouldn't be suggesting this, but as far as Insurance is concerned I'd be tempted to wheel the bike out to the main road and tell the Insurance it happen there. Better yet, get the bike take to some out of the way back road and do the same thing! The only problem is then the police might investagate the "accident site" and ACC would want to increase our bike reg's again.
Na, if you are going to race, you will just have to grin and bare it if you take a cropper. Should be the same if you are going to "race" on the raod. Insurance does not cover for drunk drivers, why should they cover us when we are speeding (here I mean 150KPM+).
PS: I speed!

You'd show them a crashed bike on the road, but no skid marks, no debris scattered around, no evidence of a crash apart from a crashed bike itself. Insurance companies can be crap but they ain't dumb. Get caught doing this and they would prosecute for fraud.

YA, I knew that. I was just shit stirring. It depresses me to think that we are too scared to take risks based on the fact that the Insurance Companies wont payout:crazy: Think about that. Life is about taking risks! If you don't like the risk, don't take it. If you do, don't exspect the Insurance Companies to cover you! :moon:

For your own safety. Id do the following.
Wear a decent lid and gloves. preferably one piece leathers but as a minimum a 2 piece cudura suit.
normal road boots.
As far as the bikes concerned as a minimum. Id tape up the indicators/headlight , make sure you have decent brakes and tread on the tyres. Basicly its your neck on the line if summat craps out --Ohh and have fun out there dude

Couple of questions, $80 per vehicle means two people could use the same vehicle and only have the one cost??

Second - if cars come, do they need to have anything with them helmets or anything along those lines??

Kwaka-Kid
16th June 2004, 20:07
Cajun - No its Like $80 per bike and or per person in all honesty! as a 2nd rider cant fill out a sheet without paying etc and you need to be signed up!

thats if you want to be official and all :) but they can never tell etc, i had 3 odd people riding my machine and actually didnt pay till after my 4th time out there! (forgot!) its really relaxed etc dude :)

I went to one track day at puke just to check it out, that was back in Summer its likely to rain tomorrow 18th June not lookin to hot.
does you need good gear I reckon not sure what the minimum is? two pairs of Jeans? anyone know what the scruiteneers require?
You need plenty of Gas too cause your fuel consumption will be high and you need some to get to the nearest gas stop 3ks dont run on reserve.
dont forget your gonna boil your brake fluid and dont expect your tyres to not get a pasting. I think $80 is a bit of a killer they should have a pay per lap charge with a base charge or something some might like to have a go but not 20 go,s It's a good family day out when the formula 5000 and classic car club share the track(not at the same time naturally) and there no gate charge

FROSTY
17th June 2004, 23:04
shit mate where are you coming from.
$80 is chicken feed. The track time guys charge like 150
Last time I was there I had at least 3 hours riding for that $80 Bloody cheap
Pukie is the MOST expensive track to hire in the country

Of course you should have some good protective gear on (but it's not compulsory) - jeans won't save any skin if you bin it! :bye:

Gas is only 2 mins down the road, and you can leave and return before and after each track session when the gates are open.

Tyres will take a beating if you go hard out! Last bike only open day (3-4 hrs riding) I wore 1/4 of the tread off my tyres.

Also, no insurance cover on the track unless you take out a special policy.

Its really relaxed, you just go across and pay once you have settled in. You pay at the Jeninian homes building where you'll see a whole lotta people gathering around. That's that building where people can go on top of the roof for a good view of the front straight.

mmmmm they are sc1's(the softest they came from brian bernard racing team, brand new tho) they helded the big trip rather well, but i only done communting on them for past two weeks and starting to go square, and no riding this weekend if this week keeps up like this, might have to take the wifes vtr next week, until i can round mine back up. well unless MR wants to buy them off me and i put something else on them, since next day looks long time away.

I don't really wanna to track-time i think be to many people there for me. Unless there is gonna be a some kb that are going

Not specifically. I've heard from people who've done tracktime that if you're a relatively experienced road rider, you won't get much value for money out of the track tuition. If you want more track focussed skills days you need to do the Fred Merkel School kind of thing.
BTW, anyone planning on going to an open day on any of the Fridays this month?

I' m new to this forum and have just bought a Honda CBR600rrrrrracer to burn around on. The plan is to go down to Puke on Fridy to see if I can recover some of the old Skills that I had (if my leathers turn up). It would be cool to meet up with any KB's out there.

The real reason I'm there is I gotta call up by Honda to get in some practice and then go to Europe and deal to that Rossi guy whoose P***ed the boss off.

I'm pretty new to this forum too, haven't managed to go on any KB rides yet. I might be there this coming Friday. Depends how much study I can get done on Thursday for my exam on Saturday...if all goes well, see you there for sure.
What colour is your bike? I'll look out for you. Mine's a candy blue zx6r.

Hi Toast

Likewise haven't been on any KB rides (wrists need to strenghten up with the ride position). The Honda's red, silver and blue and hope fully free of scuff marks by the end of day. Nice bike, I looked at a ZX6R thought it was better than the Honda powerwise but I got a great deal on the Honda. So thats the way I went plus it reminded me a bit of my old Ducati (Not powerwise, definitely not soundwise just looks and ride position). Good luck with the exam and maybe see yah out there.

I'm guessing that you probably had a ride on the 05 zx6r, which is about 20 kgs lighter and 10hp up on mine...but still, I'm happy with my baby.

I'll almost certainly be there tomorrow by the way...study is mostly finished...and provided that there's no tsunamis, volcano eruptions or light precipitation, I'll be there :niceone: Ok, a bit of rain I don't mind, but if it pisses I won't put up with that.

Weather forecast is good though...yeah, yeah :Punk:

Yes, SpankMe has already added them to the calendar. 3 Fridays and 1 Saturday if I remember correctly. If my lame-arse mate gets his '9 sorted, we will be going to one of the Friday ones towards the end of the month.

Roll on up, go to the marshal's office, sign your life away, hand over the cash, go for your life.
If you haven't been on a track, there's several of the usual 'track rules' you should be aware of so you don't annoy others, especially 'hold your line'. It helps if you remove your mirrors.
If you do a search through the forums you can find more information to elaborate on above.

Fan-fucken-tastic day at the track this morning. Nothing but sun and clean racetrack. A few bikes out. A dude on an old Gixxer 6 race bike )immaculately prepared though), some guy on a Repsol blade doing respectable times, an RSV thou and a guy obviously coming to grips with his shiny yellow K4 thou'.

We bailed about 12, opting for a lunch at Monarch Cafe. Great food, I must say, even if "Fish of the day" was $31.

Did some wheelies on the way home, none past the feds as we did on the way down though.

Mint day, hope it's half as good on the 12th.

When we arrived at the track at around 10.40am it was great to see it completely dry and then later that huge black cloud came right over our heads and passed without dropping any rain! If I had judged the days weather by the conditions at home when i left this morning at 9am I wouldn't have rode down cos it was pouring down! I'd highly recommend going on a Friday over a weekend day.

Reasons:
-you get way more track time on the Fridays. One time that I went there was at most 5 bikes the whole day, and I ended up doing around 300km's on the track.

-the one weekend track day that I went to was full of clowns. Pricks with big egos, on big bikes, I saw 2 crashes in 2 sessions, each involving multiple bikes, one clown taking out another from behind in to the hairpin while trying to carve up the field.

I'm aiming to be there this Friday, may take a sick day if I get the new job I'm interviewing for tomorrow :niceone:

Was talking to Keystone19 last night about the Open Day on the 3rd June which is a Saturday, it's part of Queens Birthdays weekend. Funny feeling that hardly anyone will be there that day so more time for the bikes ;) :blip:

Im keen as to have a play around (since I cant attend TD3) just gotta check Im not working and my insurance will cover the day first.

Anyone else thinking of going/comin up? $90 is good value for the whole day and it could save your life by giving you the op to hone your skills.

I might pop along...

You really reckon there'll be no one there?

Guess I might come along for a look, and if it's not too full, have a ride.

Is it going to be open the whole day? OR one of these BS (edit: 1pm) start things?

RIB "Classic Cover" cover you on a track day. They will not cover you if you are being timed though. How they can prove this I have no idea.

They are a good broker to deal with. Qkchk got her Insurance through Cibby chick but I don't know the details.

We have got our insurance through Cibby Chick (insurance broker) as far as I understand its classed as 'rider training'......... which it is.

Take a note of the indemnity you sign to use the track though - with Frosty's track days you waive your right when you sign the form. It is quite possible you also do this on the form you sign to use Pukekohe (or where ever), I can't remember. Your insurance is unlikely to pay out if it can't recover costs elsewhere. You may find you are in fact not covered.

Would advise you ta recheck with ya insurer rather than assume you are covered (that fine print can be a prick when the chips are down). I not saying ya wrong, but are you 100% sure you are covered for Puke Open Days?

No jacket will mean no entry either...at least if tehy stick to the rules that they state.

$90 for a day? Hell, that's much better value for money than the last time I took my GSXR600 out on the road (just prior to selling it, funnily enough).

So - never having attended an open day / track day before, does anyone have any hints or tips? I've read & noted the point about no bales infront of the armco - hey, that's still better than cheesecutter-cable lane separators and / or oncoming Mack trucks :-)

just go out and do it. If you start to worry about people catching you up etc your likely to cause an accident. If you just ride and hold your line then people will pick and appropriate and safe time to pass you.

Other than that, look through the corner, not at your speedo!

So - never having attended an open day / track day before, does anyone have any hints or tips? Some random thoughts, in no particular order:

Get a good sleep the night before.

Ensure your bike is "up to standards".

Ensure your protective wear is "up to standards".

Remove your mirrors.

Adjust your suspension accordingly, take necessary tools, manuals.

Adjust your tyre pressures accordingly, take a gauge and pump.

Hold your line on the track.

Don't get frustrated by other riders passing you quickly.

Warm up your tyres.

Keep an eye on your fuel consumption.

Enjoy getting familiar with the track and gradually improving and increasing your speeds, if that is your desire.

Get to know the capabilities of your bike, ie. brakes, suspension, gearing, engine power, torque, etc.

Practise respect & courtesy for all others who are on the track with you.

That's enough to keep you occupied first time out, have fun! :Punk:

Well put Zedman. And for those who can't wait - tough - you're going to have to. Earliest estimates for a usable race track is now 1st quarter 2008. As per the Hampton Downs track thread, resource consent for the actual race track was put on the back burner to October this year now. With Taupo getting the A1GP and Hamilton getting the V8 street race, there is no incentive to push Hampton Downs to be build sooner rather than later. It'll get finished when it gets finished.

Puke is pretty thrilling in places, like coming over the hill hard in fourth, as the bike starts to drift sideways on the crest at 200+...but the safety thing is almost enough of an issue to condemn it to being a shithole in my opinion (just my opinion...those who haven't binned there may differ)...sad that it will never be given the run off to make it a great track for bikes.

Hi everyone,
I've never been to a track day and my brother and I are looking forward to the Open Track day on Sept 30. My bro rides a TZR that he's just finished working on and wants to test it before he sells it.
What are the rules (if any) concerning gear? Obviously helmet, gloves, boots are to be worn, but what about back-protectors, are they compulsory or is the built-in protection in a riding jacket enough? And will they let him on the track in riding jeans?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

At Pukekohe track days you just fill out a short form with name, addy, phone number, etc pay your $90 in exchange for a small sticker which you stick on the front of your bike or helmet, and that's it, you're on your own. They don't even look at your bike or gear. I think there is a level of trust there, the clientelle is usually the sensible type who ensures their bikes and gears are up to some standard, but of course one persons standards often differs from anothers!!

I wasn't looking forward to it, cos I thought it's too fast and scary especially compared to Taupo, but I went to Pukekohe today and got on the track!!

Perfect conditions and about 15 bikes today. Spent the first session learning the lines, and braking points ( then the second and third still doing the same!! ) Took time getting used to the speed. In fact I got up to 220km/h before the kink in the back straight and though the bike was obviously capable of a lot more I felt like I was getting blown off.... I had learnt to tuck in behind the screen by then too, but maybe I could tuck in further (or maybe I'm just getting old). With time I got more comfortable going thru Jennian and Castrol, which are pretty awesome corners. Those esses coming onto the front straight are pretty fast too - leaned right over at around 150km/h I was getting passed like I was standing still by the 2 guys on the new R6's .

Tore up the right side of my rear tyre this time so I will need new rubber for the next Taupo trackday. Also used a full tank of fuel!!

Awesome day in the end... might even go again next week....Mounted the video camera for the last session - one lap of Pukekohe

What do you think?

i have the same feelings man. although i have never been on track yet. i would love to have a go. and pukekohe is the closest one to me. i hope they do stay in action or yea otherwise they should build a new and better one at meremere or somewhere...maybe KB can have its own track built...hmmm...
yea i would probably be more relaxed in trying the track if it was organised for novices in varying speeds, i would probably be in the slow lane...

*drool* that track looks so awesome.

As for Puke...I might make this one. Can anyone give an indication as to how many sessions you normally get on a weekend open day?

Also, does anyone know of any event that will cause them to give extra time to anyone other than bikers? Last time I went there on a Friday we only got 3 sessions 'cos the V8s were having extra long ones...and it was fuc'n gay.

after watching the single lap video of the GSX-R600, I think I'll keep my money for a Taupo trackday.. The rider training I did there on Saturday (Short track 1.3km - Track 1) had more bends in it than the whole of Pukekohe, nevermind the Taupo full track..

Personally, to have any sort of fun at Pukekohe, you'd need a pretty big bike, not a 250cc like I've got..

I still think Taupo is more fun, but doing a track day/open day at Pukekohe is definitely worthwhile especially from a rider training perspective. The turns are at much higher speed and it's an awesome feeling doing 150km/h+ on full lean. Jennian and Castrol are awesome turns. I think more skill is required to go round Pukekohe fast, given the same horsepower.

i wonder what part of pukekohe i wouldn't be on full throttle then..

Going into the hairpin and Castrol? If you're on an IL4 250 capable of 160km/h I would have thought you'd have fun.... maybe not on a GN250 or VTR250. I did my first trackday on the old Taupo track and have 3 booked before Christmas. Love the Taupo track.. but Puke is different.... and if you're an Aucklander it's just down the road!

It's a parallel-twin.. occasionally gets to 160km/h, but seems to prefer 150 as its top speed.. only track I've been on so far is Taupo track 1
